2:44, I remember seeing what the guardswere doing made my "oh shit" moment. What they're doing is "bounding". This is where suppressive fire is put on target while others in the line move up. As soon as the team that's bounding comes to a halt, they then lay out fire to let the other team forwards, rinse and repeat. I actually think that the teams are part of a larger squad that consists of 7. Two fireteams and their squad leader. This is, of course, speculation. However, it is textbook infantry tactics.

I remember as a kid when I first played this on the original Xbox and I got to the beaches of Nova Prospekt, I saw the Guards and was like "Wait, weren't their eyes blue?". After we got back to City 17 then I was like "Wait, weren't their eyes yellow?" It wasn't until my second playthrough and I was scavenging ammo from a dead Prison Guard that's when I saw the "Nova Prospekt" tag on their back. In awful quality as it was the original Xbox, but definitely noticeable.

Regarding the last segment: Maybe the only-two-firing limit is per target? That is, only two soldiers engage a single target a time. This explains the observed behavior when only fighting the player, and enables them to deal with antlions much more effectively.

The combine firing more than two guys against ant lions could mean they know they wont have to take cover as ant lions don't have guns to shoot back, so they instead stay out in the open to all shoot together and finish them off quickly

Not sure if combine soldiers are made that way though, though it is possible since the dialogue alludes it. It could be 2 squads or that there is now more than 2 enemies, so making a total of 4 attack slots (since it could be 2 attack slots per enemy). This would need an in depth analysis...

Checked the console: the combine guard does more damage and has more health then the combine soldier. Here are their stats in hard difficulty: Combine soldier: - 50 health - 10 kick damage Combine guard: - 70 health - 15 kick damage

I'd like to decompile the maps and take a look at how that was set up. EDIT: I found some in d2_prison_03. It looks like they're act busy hint nodes with the animation set as the hint activity.

I've been thinking about when I looked at the standard and nova prospekt units. At the first I was convinced that they're essentially reskinned standard unit since valve didn't want to make the player look down at the standard once. But after doing some analysis I fond that it didn't match the nova prospekt unit to be the same as standard unit considering the fact that they protect one of the most important facilities for the combine on earth. They at least should feel little bit unique than standard unit considering that you will only see these soldiers on time and then never see them ever again. Those soldiers should be higher rank that have been chosen to guard nova prospekt facility featuring an upgrade over the standard soldiers which is AR2 soldiers can use energy ball only one or three times. Not only this will increase their efficiency but will make them high value unit before elites.

This old game is still talked about and modern fps gamees lack Story Content Enemies Other guns (srsly other enemies in games have the same gun just like in Cod Russian loadout Ak Pistol Granade Repeat. (and P90 in some stuff. ) Stealth Silenced gun knife Repeat Task force and delta M4 Pistol Knife Repeat. But BO1 stood out and has more stuff in it.

HL2 analysis? In 2019? Awesome! EDIT: You should have mentioned that Nova Prospekt units have a differently pitched voice than normal Combine soldiers. Also you should have mentioned that there's no such Prospekt Elite Soldier even if Nova Prospekt is so important to the Combine. The ones you see at the end of the chapter during teleportation are the normal ones who most likely are reinforcements. Also in GMOD workshop there is a fanmade Prospekt Elite.

The Nova Prospekt Guard is a reskinned combine soldier but without camouflage and only appear in Nova Prospekt Prison and nowhere else. The Guards have yellow eyes differing from a regular combine soldier. Their patch on the right arm is a CMB patch. Their voices are lower than regular combine soldiers, possibly undergoing a vocoder augmentation or getting it replaced by some other means. The shotgunners are much the same of regular shotgunners. The red eyes, the shotgun equipped, but it has a different uniform and tint. The end.
