RESCUE COMPLETE! - Painting a Converted Blightking

Taking an Age of Sigmar Blightking and turning it into a Warhammer 40K Deathguard Marine was a pretty eye opening experience. Honestly I couldn't stop thinking about it after the video was done, so I knew I had to get down and paint this guy before it was too late! My goal was to unify the entire conversion using a few different weathering techniques. Using a triad of colors in conjunction also helped quite a bit. This is pretty much how I plan on taking care of a Deathguard Killteam, if I were ever to actually get and learn to play Killteam that is. Someday...

Just one word: MORE!!! I truly love conversions, I like kitbashing, but seeing someone doing it and telling how he does it, is just a whole new level to that. Sadly more people are doing "painting guides" (which I appreciate , AND need!) but so few do such beautyfull conversion guides like yours. Keep up the good work! And thank you for this video!

Totally agree. In my mind, a conversion makes your unit uniquely and truly yours. Don't get me wrong, there is no chance I would have time to convert every model in my army, but the ones I do just envoke so much more pride.

A nurgling on the gun just fits so right, like nurglings are just annoying little creatures and i can imagine the frustration of the plague marine trying to shake the little guy off so he can aim properly.

Those purple tentacles really sell this model! What a great colour combo, it really looks like something wet and putrid is bursting out of that old crusted armour. Incidentally The base looked great at 9:50 - a really ghostly looking effect with that green hue. Thanks for posting !

It’s funny, I almost kept the base as is because it did look kind of cool like that. Might be a good thing to try for some nighthaunt models. Weird happy accident :)

You know I've always wanted to start a death guard Army. I've always been a green skin player and seeing your conversion and how beautiful it turned out and it's disgusting Glory has inspired me to get a death guard Army or at least get a really good death guard model to paint up.

For a while now I have been under the impression that Ork players get to have all the fun when it comes to conversions. I know Nurgle has it's moments, but this really opened it up for me and I see the possibilities! Moving from Orks to Deathguard isn't a massive leap, I bet you could do some really cool things!

This model turned out awesome. I personally prefer the 30K Deathguard aesthetic over the 40K, but to each their own. The weathering turned out really well. Did you seal the pigments down after applying them? If so how did you do it? I’ve been playing around with pigments as well and I’ve found that if you think there’s enough on there, it’s not enough. One channel that I’ve found awesome for learning more weathering is The Race for Terra. There are some awesome tutorials and he’s been building a really solid community. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the heads up on that channel, I’ll definitely take a look :) Normally to seal pigments I just spray it down with matte medium. This model probably won’t be used in a game anytime soon so I didn’t seal it.

I know..its an old video..and realy like it. But something you do not mention or I missed it. What do you use as sealant/warnish to protect the mini and not to "flatten" the colours out? Or do you "overhighlight" to compensate for the warnish toning it down..? Thank you..and keep it up..you truly are an inspiration..to me at least..👍

Yeah sometimes it seems like a lot, but once you get into it and start separating pieces it doesn't seem that different from painting anything else. Most DG models look daunting to paint but Nurgle is very forgiving to paint in general.

Casey - is there a particular point during the painting where you switch from holding the model with your fingers to holding it with a handle? Thanks.

I usually try and hold the model the whole time, it gives you better control and you can be much more steady. In this case I was moving some stuff around and found a painting handle, I figured id put the model on it so I wouldn’t smudge the streaking grime when I got to that part. Ironically, having the mini on a handle while airbrushing makes it easier to not get paint on my hands, but that’s the only part where it wasn’t on the handle lol. Honestly it’s personal preference. I like handles, but I could do without them too.

Yo what brushes do you use for gen purpose? I need a new place online to order my 1s and 0s. Amazon is trash or at least where I ordered from. 25 dollar brushes showing all the pros use that show up with the hairs bent really is annoying

Right now I’m using Squidmar brushes. They are similar to Windsor and Newton’s, and they should go on sale pretty soon. For things like oils and enamels I use old GW brushes, and for general stuff I use older, but still pretty good, Windsor and Newton size 1s. I order my w&n brushes from amazon too, so far I have been pretty lucky with the packaging, no bent hairs in transit. If you can find a local art store then you will probably be able to pick out the brushes you want too, w&n are used for water coloring mostly. Alternatively, and not great timing, but I digress, conventions or tournaments usually have vendors with good brushes that you can get for good prices. I picked up a pack of bombwicks for $6 a piece before Covid ruined it for us all. Hopefully that helps :)

The conversion was great. Really didnt like the paintjob though. The stippling and the pigment, just didnt work. The mono color armor didnt pop and the weathering wasnt very successful. Id suggest you go check out more weathering channels, make it a bit more subtle sometimes makes it look better. Yours was a bit too liberal and took away from the realism. But overall great work in the conversion.
