I see several suggestions in the comments of 'use a saw', 'use a grinder', etc., and in this case it's obvious that those were viable options. (watch to the end). However you must keep two things in mind; 1. These are strong animals with a mind of their own. They are usually desensitized to having their hooves nipped and rasped but, mostly likely, not to having a grinder or a saw applied to them. In some cases, it is the equine's reluctance to allow their feet to be dealt with that leads to this sort of condition in the first place. As I stated in an earlier comment, Cow hoof nippers are the best way to start I have ever seen. They allow twice the leverage due to their longer handle length, allow the animal's foot to remain on the ground and allow the farrier remain out from under the animal. 2. Grinders, and some saws you might be tempted to use, would need access to power. Often this means stretching a cord from some outlet to the the works space. Believe it or not, the movement of dealing with that cord can set off an animal. At that point you have a strong excited dancing animal, a whirling or reciprocating blade, at least two laceration-prone animals and a cord. Which is now trying to constrain all to encourage one to meet the other. In this video he resorted to a hand saw for the back feet. While this is a better option, and in this case, the animal dealt with it fine. You cannot expect that the animal will always accept new (to them) sights, sounds or sensations. Grinders, in particular, offer the animal all three. Just remember, you're trying to help this animal. You want to accomplish this in as safe and least stressful manner as possible. Mostly for them, but also for your farrier and yourself.

There’s a new thing you may not have heard of. It’s called a battery. I used to work with a farrier. You put the animal in cross ties and have someone hold up the opposite leg. It came up in pain and lame from the force and twisting. If its afraid of the sound, you get it mildly sedated. He could have blindly cut into flesh this way. With hood that hard, its easy to split the hoof into the Corona using that much force. He admitted inexperience. Should have at least tried to contact someone with experience.

after going to school for horses and working on a horse farm and learning so much about proper care of horses hooves from my boss who shod horses, i had the bless fortune of meeting a poor little pony with curled up hooves, the little guy was so sad he could hardly walk, i drove for over an hour home to get my tools and came back and trimmed his hooves, his sadness never changed as i trimmed away his fairy shoes he just stood there, when i finished the last foot and untied him he took off running, kicking up his hind feet in the air and jumping, i guess he was happy, 😄we all were. working on that horse farm was the best job i have ever had, i was in my late teens then and i'm 70 now, i love horses and horses can tell when they are loved.

I have a love/hate relationship with seeing videos like this, with severely overgrown hooves. I hate seeing animals so neglected and in pain. There is no excuse a person can give me to allow such suffering to occur. But I love seeing the work going in to get the animal back into healthy condition. It's a weird satisfaction like " Yeah.....you take it off, take it aaaaaallllll off. Oooh, yeah! Give that donkey a fresh start to a healthy future!"

No excuse? I'm sure being on your deathbed is a good enough excuse as it was stated the owner was sick, it's not like the owner wanted things to happen this way. But yes on a general basis it would be cruel for an owner to neglect their animals as such

@@kekeh.5696 Hooves being overgrown to this extent doesn't happen overnight, or even over a few months. This is years of neglect. If you're "on your deathbed" long enough for this amount of growth to occur, I daresay you have time to arrange some sort of care for the animal.

@@mokko759 the guy legit said they were ill for a long time and then died. Don’t judge people you don’t know. They might have genuinely cared for all of their animals, you don’t know how long these people were sick, what age they were or what illness they had. You don’t know their situation so don’t just assume that all cases like this are because the owners didn’t care and then up and died, it could very well be more complexed than can be said in a public video

@@hellodelightfulrando Being sick does not mean there are no options regarding the care of animals in your possession. They could have called a donkey rescue, could have sold the donkey, could have surrendered him to the humane society, something! If you are physically unable care for an animal, you find somebody who can. If the owner was too sick to care for the donkey then who was feeding and watering him all this time? Somebody had to have been. Somebody, a family member, caregiver etc. had to have been feeding this donkey and seen his poor feet. How come this person didn't do anything?

@@orundestiunpre2944 nope! The way these hooves grew put a lot of stress on his heels and caused A LOT of tork on his toes when he stepped. in a well trimmed foot, a horse should be landing with its hoof flat against the ground- not toe nor heel first. However, judging by the weight on this donkeys toes, its a pretty easy deduction that hes probably landing toe first. This leads to pain when he walks, and just when he stands in general. this is also why you see spots of "old" blood or bruising in the video- from the stress put on the laminae and hoof wall from such overgrown hooves! Yes, it’s very nerve wracking! If you own horses/donkeys/mules you always gotta make sure the person working on their hooves knows what they’re doing. Very basic cleaning care should be done by the owner fairly often, and you always want to make sure you have a professional come work on them on a regular sort of schedule based on the animal’s need. It’s scary because you don’t want to cut too deep, but someone has to do it!

@@ak47chan20 it's actually better to cut them often. You're more likely to hurt your dog if their nails grow out too long because then the quick (the sensitive part with blood supply) grows out very long. Horse owner here. Just thought I’d add that not all horses need shoes. I have a half-Arab mare who is “barefoot.” Our farrier comes every 5 or six weeks and gives her hooves a trim. They grow like our toenails so can be filed. Mine uses that device he’s got in the video to trim all around the edge and then a perfect horseshoe piece comes off. Shoes are typically used for horses only when needed because 1)costs more to shoe than barefoot trim 2)a horse can easily pull and lose a shoe, or injure itself with it 3)you’re putting holes in the hoof and hence run the risk of introducing bacteria. At our barn we generally only shoe the front because our horses are turned out together in groups and hind shoes can cause fatal damage should a horse kick (horses shod in the hind generally would be turned out alone). But shoes can also do wonders for a horse with issues like thin sole or to correct other problems. One of my friends has a horse that has wedges in its shoes to correct the angle of the hooves. He went from dead lame to perfect. Farrier work is actually incredible when done correctly, so very important, and physically hard! There’s an old saying “no feet no horse.: And it’s so gratifying to see what a difference it can make for the rescues.

Amber Siddoway my dogs would chew them up! We’d try to make sure an wash them off before but they’ll eat their own poop if they get the chance

Ally Jackson yes dogs do eat them!! But make sure you wash them before you give them to your pup, it can really hurt them and make them need a stomach pumping if not.

Thank you for your help in reconstructing that donkey's hooves. I am sorry that the owners became so overwhelmed they couldn't keep up, even to not realizing it was time to re-home their beloved pets. Thank you also to the neighbor who realized she needed to step-in.
