I live in Iceland and I am a mod of a hamster group on Facebook and the amount of clueless people is insane. Just yesterday someone said that their tiny cage was fine “because her hamster lived in it and loved passed two years”. A lot of people just don’t care at all, they don’t care about these tiny animals as much as they care about pets like dogs or cats

We just rescued two enormous male Syrians off Craigslist. They were kept together in a five gallon tank on half an inch of pine bedding, crappy Walmart food, no hides, no wheel, no enrichment, and an empty water bowl. People need to do their research before getting a pet.
@claudiakarl27023 жыл бұрын
Our local pet store (Zooplus, Germany) also sells hamsters. But they keep them separately in glass tanks with quite an amount of bedding and enrichment. Mostly you don’t see them during the day. And they only sell them after 6.30 pm because of the natural rhythm of hamsters. I know that buying hamsters in a pet store is not ideal, but at least their living conditions are not too bad.

Honestly I don't think the pet store conditions are the problem. The issue is where the hamsters/pets in general come from, all those terrible breeding mills with zero regard to genetics or the animals, keeping them in groups of tens, twenties,... boxed up in rack systems in a rectangular stone house somewhere out at the borders...
@jennyjustjenny76342 жыл бұрын
Yesterday I was in a Fressnapf XL cause I was searching for a tunnelhide for my hamster. Turns out they actually increased the room of the hamsters, better cages, more bedding, only one hamster per cage.. but the downside is, that they're still not very clean. There was a thick coat of urine and poop on the wheels (at least it was the 28cm wood and cork wheel for all rodents). But it's changing and I'm very happy that the pressure from good pet owners is so big. Even the toys were better, there was not a single plastic food bowl in sight, no plastic hides.. But they still sell bad cages. So.. not everything is great in Germany, but at least better than in the USA. 👍 I've never been in a Zooplus but it sounds like it's worth to search for new hides there. :)

my dad is one of those folks that'll see the hamsters in the pet store housed together and think its ok. I can imagine it... I tell him they _can't_ live together and he, in a matter-of-fact way, will say, "why not? the pet store keeps them together."

I have purchased hamsters at petsmart I will never do it again. I saw them in a tiny tank, back bending on the tiny wheel. One wheel ended up falling on a hammie in the glass thing, It took awhile for an employee to come over. I couldn't handle it, it got so bad that I couldn't sleep without thinking about them. recently I rescued 2 syitrans ( separate adds and in separate enclosures) it was so fun to see them explore their new found space. Years down the road I saw so many different KZbin videos showing off their huge tanks and all the proper care, I'm so happy to see so many people online sharing how to properly give hamsters an ideal living situations they shouldn't be a throw away animal. Here in my town, In America, We have a pet store called pet place. They ethically breed hamsters, mice, Rats, And guinea pigs. Both of my pigs came from there, Mango and Nova. Thanks to all the educators here on KZbin about proper hamster care I vowed to never purchase a hamster from a store! My new little one is coming from an ethical breeder and the sad thing is that there are so few of them here in the US. I will have to drive 12 hours round trip to pick up my new hamster but it will totally be worth it. The ethical breeders are really doing something great for the species. I hope to see more of them in the future so that purchasing an ethically breed hamster is more accessible to everyone.

I got my first hamster from petsmart but it was an adoption, they gave her to us for free bc she “bites” but 3months later we’ve made progress and she does not bite as much, she also loves to be petted. She’s still nippy but she’s come such a long way in just three months with proper care, lots of love and patience, can’t wait to see what she’s like after a year! She doesn’t wake up to almost anything but as soon as she hears our voice she runs towards us for treats and petting lol

My friend had a syrian hamster and once, she had me take care of her while they went on holiday. She warned that the hamster bites everyone who approaches her, so they didn't really interact with her. During the week the hamster was with me, I had her out daily, petted her, had her on my hands and she nipped my hand only once (not without a reason, I was testing her boundaries). She did need a more slow and careful approach and patience than other hamsters I have had, but she was not agressive or anything, just a bit more shy and easily scared. After I told the friend about it, she let me have her since they didn't really manage to make any bond with her, even though they had her for about a year. I think a lot of people who say that their pet 'bites' just don't know how to interact with them.

I'm sorry, but I can never understand the "throwaway pet" mindset, and I am very thankful for this. I got my first hamster at 12 for my birthday. I was used to the cats in the house, but I was never tasked with taking care of them until I was older. 8 Years ago I found very little online, and trusted the pamphlets that I found in pet stores and the fancy designs of the kaytee cages. I thought that their cage biting was endearing and a charm of their personality, and I am so grateful that I've now returned to owning hamsters armed with proper knowledge, research, and planning. I still carry the guilt however of how horribly these hamsters were housed and handled. But at the end of the day, I still knew the responsibility that I had towards that animal. And my parents were realistic. My mom was the one who spent most of her time socializing with them, placing their cages next to her computer (on top of having a sleep schedule that keeps you awake until 4 am). Returning the animals or trying to rehome them were never an option, save for one that got ill within 3 days. Unfortunately, he was likely sick at the pet store, and it appeared that wet tail took him from us before we even noticed. But when my first hamster, a syrian at 2 years of age, started to decline in health, we did our best to give him the best "quality" of life (Tons of sweet, sugary cereals and lots of time to just snuggle. Again, I'm so glad I've learned.) When my mom's first winter white developed a cyst on his leg, we went a town over and got him seen at one of the only exotic animal vets nearby. He recovered and seemed content the rest of his life. As much as we didn't know, we still valued these animals. We made a commitment when we purchased them to take care of them for their lives, especially knowing how much shorter theirs are to ours.

Many years ago, I was witness to a peculiar situation. Our cats lived half outside half inside. They got food twice a day at home, but they also had a bowl outside with pellets. One day I watched (through a window) as our cat sat and groomed herself about two metres away from the bowl. Suddenly, a hedgehog rounded the corner and parked its nose inside her food bowl. The cat froze in mid grooming, one paw still raised and tongue still out, cocked her head to the side and watched with the expression of what I can best describe as incomprehension. She stayed frozen like that even a little bit after the hedgehog left. I wonder if the guinea pigs experienced something similar.

Ive just got a hamster today, basically i heard off my mum that a colleague at her workplace had a bf that was neglecting his 1yr old Syrian, As soon as i found out i said to tell them I'd take her because i couldn't let an animal be treated that way if i could help, She came in a tiny pink plastic cage with bedding that looked as though it had never been changed, a wheel so small she was bent over trying to use it, i managed to find a very very deep cage and massive wheel that she loves but i want to get something even bigger next month when i can afford it, Ive been having trouble looking for the right cage online as they either look too small or are made out of wood, ideally I'd like a tank, ill keep searching and hopefully find something that will be perfect for her, she's so friendly, ive had her out several times today and she keeps climbing on me and loves to be stroked on her back, she's made me very happy but i just want to do right by her so I'm glad to have found this channel because i want to learn and make sure i do everything the way she needs, Subbed xx

@Munchie's Place: Cruella sounds like a hoot....LOL. When I was about 11 or 12 my parents let me get a hamster from the middle school librarian who's mascot library hamster had a litter. Peaches was a like peachy color with a white band around his middle and long hair and Syrian which they called them Teddy Bear Hamsters back then. (This was around 34 years ago.) Anyway, yes bad cages and stuff back then but he managed to flip the cage door open and escape and he somehow wound up all the way across our small house in my parents room under their water bed. No amount of coaxing with treat or anything was working so my parents pulled out the drawers and drilled a hole large enough for my mom's hand and arm to fit through to reach in and grab him. We called him "runaway rodent" from then on. LOL.

I see this same story time and time again and I wish there was a way to get it out there that Hamsters aren't easy pets. They require large spaces, affection from humans but not from others of their species, and I would bet that the majority of Hamsters being re-sold are in that situation due to misinformation about what it takes to care for a Hamster, and that makes me super sad. Few months ago I rescued a little Winter White Hybrid from a kind family who had simply been screwed over by the store they bought their two Hamsters from. The store told them they could totally house the two of them together in one cage.. The family realized they couldn't pretty quickly, and I reached out and rescued the lil guy. :) Not quite sure how their remaining hamster is doing, since they told me the Hamster they were keeping was a female, and Snowball is certainly a male, so.. Yikes. I see this same story so often. I wish pet stores were more educated on their animals needs! EDIT: Wanted to add a little positivity to the end of my comment because I realized it was kinda sad, so - Snowball was kept previously in a 200 - 300 Square Inch cage with his "friend".. He's now in a 1000+ Square Inch enclosure happy on his own and is thriving! :) He came to me as a neglected, supposedly bitey and unhappy little Hamster, and now he comes running when he hears my voice and snuggles up into my hand to sleep. Very happy ending for him.

i would love to have my own specifically hamster/gerbil/mouse pet store, with proper cages and hand made proper diets and stuff, and all animals ethically bred by myself. and all at relatively affordable prices, while still making a profit. i'd have colorful and fun cages, like for example barn or house-shaped wood cages and stuff like that, all coming in options for side ventilation, top ventilation, or both. oh and of course every cage would be tall enough for at least 10 inches of bedding and a 12 inch wheel without sloping the bedding. or even bigger. plus (non-plastic) accessories for many different themes, because currently it's SO hard to find enough stuff for any theme other than natural at a reasonable price. many different substrates like paper, hemp, aspen shavings, aspen wood pellets (which don't currently seem to exist -_-), multiple options for safe sands, cork granules, and even dried flowers (as a mix-in for decor, not as main substrate of course) potentially some rodent-safe candles, reasonably priced stands for every size cage available, that could also be tall enough for another cage to sit underneath cages that can connect together like crittertrails, but with safe and easy to clean tubes, and being plenty big enough for use on their own as well. and multiple choices for hand made diets and healthy treats for each species.
@catherinerogers85583 жыл бұрын
oh and i could also have the mamas on display so people could see the babies being raised before they're old enough to be sold, but in a way that's not too stressful on the mamas, such as dark tinted or even one-way glass.

and i could also have all breeding hamsters listed where people could see which hamsters would be the parents. they'd have a list of characteristics and traits, and on the cages of their babies that would be up for sale, they'd have information on why the parents were paired together, such as better temperament, health, longevity, etc.

Pet stores in Germany are not much better, sadly. Only very few pet stores sell appropriate supplies, we rescues have to do a lot of education work to make up for all the bs petstores tell costumers. ❤️

I rescue Crested Geckos and I see a lot of geckos that are housed together. People need to do more research before they get any kind of animal.

The laws in the netherlands are not any better for hamsters. We have for wild animals, but not for rodents sadly.

I think it’s dumb for parents to expect kids to take care of animals. They should be prepared to take care of the animal themselves.

germany here what is law has sadly nothing to do with whats good for the pets .most of the stuff you see is recomendations not law and when i try to report stuff like animal abuse ppl laugh at you cause nobody reinforces the law. its just a sad story we have so many backyardbreeders everywhere q.q

Greed, that's why we can't get laws to help anyone.

I'm sorry Munchie but I have to call you out on one statement. Adopt don't shop. So you want the animals in the pet stores to die there without ever having been loved or cared for in a steady home. Great. I disagree. I think those animals deserve homes just as much if not more than animals from rescues or needed. I don't like the system but it will never go away. Your attempted boycott won't stop the pet trade. I love you and your channel but you are wrong. All hamsters deserve love, even the ones unfortunate to be born into pet mills.

i think that while she is right that it's not great to support these stores, there's currently not enough of an actual 'movement' going on to make a difference. once i can drive myself hours each way, i'll start buying hamsters from ethical breeders, but until then i'm going to continue getting them from the only place i can. once there's an actual movement to boycott and protest them, i will absolutely join in.
