I feel bad for the original owner, it sounds like she was trying her best to take care of them properly and was badly misinformed. Also, those hamsters are beautiful.

It happens way too often, recently my aunt was feeding her sugar gliders horrible food because of the previous owner who had them said that's what they ate, but I also think with the internet, owners should always use it to learn on how to take care of animals. I don't think there's an excuse for someone not knowing how to properly care for an animal when its so easy to look it up and learn, it's way too common for people to mistreat their pets accidentally because of this and there's no reason for it. Owners, please educate yourself *before* getting an animal.

@@BooksToAshes I do agree with this mostly but I will say that the internet is also filled to the brim with misinformation, even from what seem like reputable sources. For the general public, it's like a minefield. Who do you trust? I mean, my local rescue is rife with bad animal practices and neglect but people trust them. The local mega-mart type petstore has better care!

When my brother adopted his dwarf hamsters a few years ago, the shelter would only give them away as a pack of three because they were "bonded". They ended up almost killing each other and had to be separated. So sad there's still so much misinformation given today.

Omg when a shelter is this dumb, what can you expect from an average owner. :(
@AlastairG
@AlastairG Жыл бұрын
I feel like that’s part of the reason shelters won’t take small mammals where I live. They will take Guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and other larger small mammals but they won’t take mice, hamsters, gerbils, etc. *It’s very sad that there’s a lack of resources to help those animals but I’m glad that uneducated people aren’t the ones rescuing them.* The humane society still haunts the back of my mind after I helped someone with an emergency surrender… they actually said to just release it outside. Yes, they called his gerbil an “it”. A *gerbil* that was born and raised in captivity. *An animal that doesn’t naturally live in the wild in that area and can not survive in the wild because it’s a pet!* A place that’s supposed to help animals recommended what’s basically a death sentence and they didn’t seem to think that was cruel at all. Edit: For anyone who’s seen some of my old comments, I used to help people with surrendering pets during emergencies and other good reasons like losing the home, extreme rent increases, income loss, etc. I understand that pain and struggle so I was willing to help.

its sad that we can't rely on pet stores to give accurate advice. and there's so many pet owners that don't realize the pet stores they shop at don't provide adequate information, so things like this happen. ): well i'm happy these chunky cuties can be put on a diet now haha

@@jennikrbez6893 So many of my rats are or were super cuddly. My grandpa Barret is almost 3 years old and turned from an active guy to a chill gentleman who loves to lie on my hand and enjoys being pet. People who never had rats most likely don't even know what an incredible bond you'll form with them and how much love they'll give back. Just because there's so much misinformation and prejudices. Robos are fun to watch, but kids usually don't like pets you can't interact with.

I just want to say, as someone who works at a pet store, please do not rely on just the employee to give you your information. Do your research BEFORE you come in. I do my best to give as much accurate information that I can, however most of the time I do not have the 30 minutes to an hour to educate every single person that comes in for a hamster. It’s just not possible. And it gets EXHAUSTING having to educate over and over again. I’m happy to answer a few questions, as a matter of fact it is encouraged. But please please please do your research beforehand.

I don't know y anyone in the right mind would think oh let's just pick up this bird seed that's for a completely different species of animal when right across the aisle that are seed mixes specifically for hamsters for a reason so you give them the balance diet they actually really need if it says bird seed on it it's probably going to hurt them severely in some way so why make that risk or even considerate it it just doesn't click in my head if it says hamster food on it maybe you should just stick with the seed mix that says hamster food

THANK YOU for your channel. I recently got a male Syrian from petsmart because my girlfriend wanted one. (I know I know give me the shit I deserve) we thought we knew “enough” for “good” hamster care but since binging your videos for 2 months straight we now know we were so so so wrong. He went from a 350 sq inch home (he was only in there for a few weeks) to a ikea detlof we got for only like 60 bucks. (950sq inches) Now he’s soooooo much happier. He never wanted to be held now he loves attention. Long story short over the past 3 months my hamster has flourished so much and all thanks to you. Keep it up❤️

Thank you Munchie for being so helpful providing advice to the world on hamsters. I'm a graduated animal care student (with knowledge on various animal topics such as biology, healthcare, diseases, breeding etc.) and have plans to start up my own ethical hamster breeding to produce lovely, healthy hams to owners and provide proper care. I am only 20, so it will take me awhile to get everything in order and find my own place to be able to carry out such a job. Hopefully within the next 5-6 years! I'd of course love to rescue them too to make sure they don't enter a breeding program and enter a better life (that's if they're not ethically bred).

The info this family had seems similar to that of a family I was building furniture for. I didn't want to just say everything they were doing was wrong (though most of it was), so I focussed on a few things. They metioned bar chewing, so I said the more chew toys they have, the better, preferably of different materials. Then I found out they'd given the hamster a bath... with water. I didn't want to tell the children they could have killed the hamster, so I spoke with their dad before leaving and explained how serious that was. The enclosure was too small too, but since it wasn't the worst offender I've seen, I left it with suggesting chews and telling them to never clean the hamster with water, sand should be used instead. They were definitely a victim of the pet shop.

I have two robo brothers (they live separately, don't worry) from a breeder. One of them is quite calm and a foodie, has been willing to sit on my hand for about 5-10 seconds since the very beginning. After that he gets bored and has to go do something. The other one is so much shier and only interacted with me in the play pen, mostly by climbing all over me. It took about five months before he was finally willing to climb on my hand inside his enclosure! But he never sits still, unless I put his daily seed mix on my palm for him to gather. It always makes my morning when this skittish sweatheart is willing to grace me with the feeling of his soft fur for even a tiny little bit. Yes, robos are definitely not good pets for small children, impatient people or anyone who is looking for a lot of skin on fur contact. They are absolutely the cutest, though.

I'm so glad you got these two and were able to separate them. I've seen the bad result of two robo hamsters being housed together. I had a sweet little robo about six years ago who had been housed with another robo. They had gotten in a fight and my little girl got the worst of it. She lost one eye and half of her face was one big scar. I named her Braveheart and told her every day how beautiful she was. I had her for nearly three years. Because of her horrific injuries I would never house two robots together. Thank you for reaching these sweet girls. I know you'll find great homes for them. Oh, and I know all about "children falling out of love with hamsters." I currently have a beautiful little Syrian who I got from a "nice family." Well-off looking people with two very spoiled and entitled looking kids who couldn't be bothered to talk to me about their hamster, tell me her name or anything else about her, and played with their phones while her mom handed me the cage like she was handling toxic waste. It was a princess castle cage. The kids had begged for a hamster but got bored and now wanted a puppy. I really hated these people. Anyway, I changed the beautiful little Syrian hamster's name and she now lives happily in a prevue 528. Yeah, I hate people who get animals for their kids and then indulge them later when the kids are bored with the hamster. People suck.

Robos can turn on each other at any time, and I wish pet shops wouldn't sell them in groups or pairs. My robo had been part of a pair for 20 months before they started fighting - thankfully, the original owner separated them straight away. Although we had the opposite experience to Munchie here - we were told our robo was a girl, but soon realised that wasn't true. Put it this way, we got a spot of warmer weather and he chose to let it all hang out. Good thing we gave Kiwi a unisex name!

They were getting the poor guy a 6.5 inch wheel. I did let them know that that was too small and they needed a 10in wheel as the hamster was full grown. So they went and got a. 11.5 inch ball.........😱🤦‍♀️. I told them that hamster balls are not good for hamsters. K referred them to you, hammy lux, Victoria and one other hamster KZbinr. When I had my baby boy Charming, I ended up getting bird seed instead because the closest pet store.... their food (scoop as you need style) was INFESTED with moth caterpillars, and besides being nervous about him eating them, I didn't want my room infested. But I DID get lab blocks to try and balance that out (same deal for my mice, I didn't have much good choice sadly). But i'm glad to know that isn't a good idea, and i'll keep that in mind for other small critters. No more hamsters only because where i'm moving, they're illegal. But other small rodents are fine.
