Baby Asha has just started grooming her caregivers!
At approximately 10 months old, Asha was so sad and in a great deal of pain when we rescued her from an abandoned hunting camp a little over one month ago.
The bones of two of her fingers were shattered and infected, and while she can't use her left hand much, the infection is under control and the bones are healing. ❤️🩹
She is eating well, growing, moving about and even laughs when tickled now! When she has fully healed and is a little older, she’ll join other chimpanzees.
*Important note: All chimpanzees at Sanaga-Yong are rescued victims of the illegal bushmeat and pet trade in Cameroon and neighboring countries. Babies such as these witnessed their free-living mothers being killed and are now orphans who need 24/7 care from human caregivers until they are ready to be integrated with older chimpanzees at the sanctuary. Chimpanzees should never be pets or forced to live with humans.*
Caregiver in video is volunteer Tiffany Berthier
