My parents rescued a pigeon when I was a teenager, and he lived to be 23 years old. He was the sweetest, most affectionate puppy bird. My mom made him a diaper so he could fly around the house without leaving a trail, and he followed me everywhere. He would cuddle and play with one of the cats, and he loved to take baths in a foil tray my mom kept for that purpose. I miss him, and it warms my heart to see your little pigeon.

Your mom is amazing. Tell her Thank You for being so kind to mother nature's most over looked speicies, pigeons are often thought of garbage birds that carry disease. We know that not true so hearing your mother's story was so nice. God Bless

@@anneN0221 I've been rescuing pigeons for over twenty years, now. "Smart" doesn't begin to cover them. I recently raised one from babyhood -- the parents rejected him, I don't know why. He thought of me as his momma, as I raised, fed, cleaned and gave him companionship. Then one day, I was washing my face as he watched me. I have a huge bathroom mirror. He was admiring himself, and looking at me while I watched him. Suddenly, I saw his face get sour and I thought, "Oh oh." I was right ; suddenly he determined I was _Not the Momma_ ! Did you know there are only seven species that recognize themselves in a mirror? And only one avian species? Yep -- that's right: pigeons. I know, because I witnessed it first hand. I am now officially " *Not the Momma* ". It is sad, but I knew it was coming. Oh, well. He grew up and got married, as they all do. I'm never invited to their weddings. I love them all, anyway.

"That's my bird up there..." This was so beautiful 🥺 I love pigeons (and raccoon, possums, and other animals that are oddly considered bad or "gross"). The ones with the worst reps are the cutest, honestly
@Nirrrina Жыл бұрын
I do too. Although I won't mess with a wild raccoon unless precautions are taken. They can be quite vicious. Possums on the other hand are pretty chill & probably won't bite you. Especially if your careful. Also their blood temp is generally too low to carry rabies. I'm partial to skunks too. I always wanted to have one as a pet. But I don't think I could care for it properly. Same with an ocicat. Even though they have no wildcat blood. They're just very athletic. Plus I already have one more cat than I'm supposed to. Tigger was a friend's former cat & the guys that had him suddenly didn't want any cats. He's an incredibly sweet & loving senior kitty. An orange tabby. I just had to tell the world that I'd only consider a very special kitty that was orange. I don't regret it though.

Pigeons are able to fly back to their nest from hundreds of miles away! People used to send Pigeons to places they would receive messages from in the future. Once a message needed to be sent, they would attach the message to the Pigeon belonging to the recipient, and it would fly right home! I believe the record carrier Pigeon could carry messages about 500 miles.
