I think in England they're trying to get breeders to start crossbreeding them so that they're closer to American Bulldogs and similar related breeds in body type, more like the original dog. Or at least that's what I read in an article on them many years ago.

@@HobbyOrganist Well quite frankly over the last century or 2 we've gotten very bad at breeding dogs, other animals too. Someone said that showing would be the ruin of all good breeds or something like that and they were right, if you look at historical photos the breeds can look very different and not in a good way. I could almost cry when I see a Pekinese because I want the original dog like the ones that came from the Forbidden City. I don't like GSDs either, a lot of dogs can't do their original jobs anymore because of fad breeding and there's entirely too much of it, quite often I want the 1800 or 1900 versions of a breed because of the fad breeding. In the case of English Bulldogs it doesn't matter if they're good or bad breeders breeding them at all in this form is bad because they're in constant pain from what I've read, dogs don't show pain if they can help it. They have short lives, need special food and have to be watched while eating so they don't choke. If it can't eat and breed on it's own they shouldn't be bred as is they should sort of back breed them or crossbreed to get something more like the original dogs, which is nothing like the current dogs. A lot of people who breed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels could be labelled bad breeders too since the show breeders are currently breeding dogs with skulls that are too small for their brains and I've heard of people still breeding them even after their dogs have been diagnosed with it.

It also inspired her name ‘Love’. At 5months old Love is in our wedding photos. Then a year later we had our first son. Love was the most amazing & patient ‘baby-sitter’. By the time our second son came along, Love was ‘old hand’ at dealing with rambunctious boys. Which is why when Love was 12 yrs old, it was so difficult to decide she needed put down. Her hips had gotten so bad that she couldn’t get up unassisted. And it was obviously extremely painful. Her eyesight had failed pretty severely. So with the recommendations of the vet that had always known and treated her, the decision was reached. It was absolutely horrible, but I couldn’t let my sweet girl be in pain.

She is on medication for the thyroid and blood pressure and had surgery for the cancer - they got most of it, but not all. They said it is malignant but low grade so it will grow slowly and given her age, chemo is really not an option as the chemicals are more likely to kill her than the cancer. She is done ok now. Gained back her weight, eats just fine. Still plays (but not quite as long), still likes to climb and jump (again, not quite like 10 years ago). :o) My daughter has had her since she was 8 weeks old, so we cherish her quite a lot. Needless to say, we see the vet fairly frequently. Which the cat does not appreciate. We have to sedate her when we take her to the vet or else she will scratch and bite and fight like a demon. When we take her, they have a 1/2 hr window to get blood, take her blood pressure and take her temperature before they can't handle her any more. You would never guess she was that old. I wish they could let my daughter help like they used to, but with covid restrictions, she is not allowed.

I've lost two cats to hyperthyroidism! First one didn't get better even with meds and special food! Had to put him down! The 2nd cat did better, his hyperthyroidism was caught earlier! After some years, his kidneys shut down! Yet he lived to 20 years of age! If I had to do it over again, I would do surgery of the thyroid! The meds cause debilitating side - effects!

I have arthritis in both of my knees. If it sucks for me I couldn't imagine how it feels for a pooch...
@refinnej53023 жыл бұрын
My poor mutt started showing signs around 2.5/3 years old. She jumped off my bed one morning and ended up with a limp so I came home and rushed her to the vet when they opened. The vet said she had the beginning signs of arthritis. She recommended a joint supplement, which has helped a lot. Poor thing got the bad end of her genes when it comes to her build. She has short legs, front point outward, with a long stout body likely from the potential very small amount of bulldog somewhere in her family tree. She's 70lbs and looks like a cross between a Corgi and Border Collie with the quantity of fur of a Husky that grew in around 3 years old. None of which she is. I give her Vet IQ Hip & Joint treats. She eats them with no problems and I will give her an extra one on bad days. She's 10 now. She's slow, but gets around just fine and doesn't seem to be in pain. She's almost always happy. My step-dad also built her some doggie steps for my bed after her accident.

Yes, but she's a 70 something year old woman. Her friend should never have done this to her. And he was aggressive more than that one bite. I'm not laying blame on the dog or her, but it just wasn't feasible anymore.

That dog is a hot mess. His breathing is horrible, his body is under so much pressure and weight. His breeding has ruined his whole life. I can't stand that people are actually still breeding these mutations that obviously impact the animals life negatively. Its disgustingly selfish. Lets not mention that he is horrendously under trained. Not even acceptable for public.
@howardtheduck76683 жыл бұрын
Agree that beeeders (& shows) have made a terrible mishmash of the bulldogs. (Can you imagine many of them having the stamina to fight bulls now?!) But, I don’t find him particularly undertrained, just in pain, and people continue to maul and molly coddle him... sticking faces near a dog with a bite history, scrunching one known to be painfully grumpy, not to mention wrestling with him on the floor and scooping those same sore front legs... poor dog needs some peace, weight reduction, and understanding of his physical deformities, along with continued low impact exercise like swimming (if possible), and ongoing clear expectations of appropriate behaviour.

stop lumping everyone who breeds dogs into your stereotype because you are WRONG! I know a breeder who breeds Cane Corso dogs and she recently spent over $10,000 on her visa card trying to save her litter of puppies who suddenly took ill from some wierd virus the vets couldn't identify, the puppies died despite her around the clock care and the vets. Not every breeder is a "puppy mill" and not every breeder cares about profits, this bulldog came from some backyard accident or puppy mill breeding father to daughter, sister to brother for max profits, good breeders like the Cane Corso lady spend thousands on tests and health clearances and finding the right stud and paying the stud fee and travel.
@ES-nq8uu3 жыл бұрын
@@HobbyOrganist sorry, but she is the minority. The reason some breeds are so permanently messed up is because of the breeder and the breeder alone. I will not stop blaming the breeder for the ultimate demise of many beautiful breeds of animals simply because they are the only ones to blame. There is simply no one else to blame but those who breed the animal with the favored mutation. Pugs can't breathe because the short snout and short legs were favored over ease of breath and movement. The Frenchie has to be ARTAFICIALLY fertilized because the male is too barrel chested and too short to properly finish the job. Yeah, the breeder has bred natural copulation right out of the Frenchie breed. They can't be left alone around bodies of water either, because they sink like stones. Again, no one else to blame but the breeder alone.

What I couldn't understand was why Peggy hadn't worked out that all that was needed to get Archie out of the car was to have him on a lead with the handle somewhere you could reach without putting your hands near his face. Or why Scott had never suggested it, because that's what he did when he took the dog to his foster home.

I once got bitten by a bull in pain and it was the last thing she ever did... I worked at a dog kennel for people to go on holiday specifically for french and english bull dogs because a lot of kennels won't take them because most require special care. One dog was very ill and in pain and we had to take it to the vet during it's stay and I had to put her in a crate for the carride but she just wouldn't get up anymore not with the leash or anything so I wanted to help her and lift her up so that she could walk in the crate but then she bit me pretty bad. First put her in the crate because she was standing now and put her in the car. Then I went to the doctor while the owners of the kennel took her to the vet. And even though the ride is very short she past away in the car not even able to make it to the vet. When my boss called the owner with the bad news he didn't mention that her last act was biting me.

It's so sad when what is obviously an accident ends up hurting the dog in the end.

The breed standard for English Bull Dogs set by the parent clubs are inhumane and responsible for the litany of health problems they suffer. This is not cute it is cruel. They do not deserve to suffer unnecessarily bc people think they look ‘cute’, if you love this breed please help to change that by writing the clubs and asking for humane changes to the standard. They know very well what this means.
