It's best to just feed a stray some food or build a small shelter. Picking them up and bringing them home will separate the kitten from its mother. That's why the kitten hid away from the 'owners'.

@@ms2189 that's what everyone thinks. It's always best to wait for a few hours till the mother arrives. The next best option is to provide food and shelter and walk away. If the kitten is spotted again for food and shelter, then it's good to bring it home.
