A boisterous, squeaky river otter pup, orphaned last month near Cottage Grove, Ore., has just taken up residence at the Oregon Zoo.
A passing motorist spotted the young otter wandering alongside Highway 58 on June 20, and alerted a local wildlife rehabilitator who collected and cared for the animal while final placement was determined by staff at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The pup, just a couple of months old at the time, was alone, hungry and dehydrated, but was rescued by the Chintimini Wildlife Center in Corvallis. Since the young otter would not be able to survive in the wild without its mother, ODFW contacted the Oregon Zoo to see if it had space available once the pup’s health stabilized.

I often wonder where this little guy is today. He looks much better in this video than the day I found him near Salt Creek Falls, about to get squished in construction traffic, just west of the tunnel. I found this video sent to me by Julie Christie at the Oregon Zoo from 7 years ago while cleaning out my email. Does anyone know if, or when, he was released?

Might not have been able to go into the wild unless it had a foster otter parent, pups don’t know how to swim or hunt for themselves etc when born, they’re taught by an adult otter. Don’t know for sure though! Try emailing her back.

Otters are so personable. I would love to have one as a pet. Though, it's a TON of work to do that, I know. Though, they're so cute, I don't think it'd ever be a problem for me. I wouldn't feel bad at all refurbishing my house to accommodate it! Plus, the tons of fish/food I'd be buying for it.

They're really expensive to care for and a baby needs around the clock care as well. If you want a sea otter, if you live near the cost you might luck out. I would recommend actually getting some schooling and volunteering at an aquarium or a zoo so you can see what the care is all about.

@hywodena

This baby otter, now named Little Pudding, is a River Otter, not a Sea Otter, but cute nevertheless. To work at the zoo you do not need any courses, but to be a zookeeper or a vet of course, you do need proper education. Ask a zoo in your area what they require their zookeepers and you'll have your answer. Usually you will not only need a lot of education, but also a lot of experience with exotic animals, as zookeeping is a very hands-on job.

They’re often kidnapped as babies and they are forever kept from behaving as normal otters do so I definitely fault people for owning them. It’s selfish.
