Rescuer Thinks She Saved 1 Dog, Unknowingly Saves 6 | PAWsitive 🧡

A rescuer thinks she's saving one dog - an abandoned, white German Shepherd with a severe case of mange when in fact she is saving six - her five pups that are yet to be born.
Full Story:
Gemma had a severe, but treatable case of Demodectic Mange that covered 70% of her body. Instead of taking her to the vet, her family dropped her off at the shelter. Gemma was clearly in pain. A volunteer at the shelter, Jolene, knew she had to do something.
Jolene, also an adoption counselor at St. Bonnie's Sanctuary (a part of Lange Foundation,) an animal rescue based in Canyon Country, took in Gemma and immediately started treatment for her condition. Already having a relationship with Gemma, Jolene took on the nearly 24 hour care of meds and baths. Within weeks, she was clearly healing. Her fur was growing back and she was putting on weight.
A little too much weight. Jolene found out soon enough that Gemma was pregnant and had been pregnant even before she left the shelter.
Gemma gave birth to 5 healthy puppies. The puppies were adopted while Gemma had to continue her treatment for mange.
But soon enough, Gemma found her perfect home too.

Funny how there are so many people who can't afford medical treatment for their pet but manage to afford junk food, cigarettes and beer, not all, but a lot of them.

She said the same thing my husband and I have said over and over "if we had more room, a bigger house, property, we'd rescue more". As it is.. I have 7 rescue cats and our Standard Poodle, Gunner. I just took in a year old Snowshoe siamse, Arlo. When I went to pick Arlo up.. he ran over to me and jumped in my lap, ignoring everyone else in the house. When we loose one, we always say "He/She will send us another ". It's turned out to be true, as in January, we lost our little boy Charlie to FIP. 3 months later, he sent us Arlo.

But there is always one special foster that you have a special bond with and you know you'll never let them go! Not a fail, my friends, but rather a huge success! Keep up the wonderful work! And to those of you who are thinking of fostering but worry about broken hearts ... don't. As they say, "it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all". We had a white Corgi/Husky mix from the SPCA who came to us at 9 months old. Turns out she was ONE WEEK pregnant when we adopted her & gave birth to 7 puppies in our living room without a hitch. We found homes for the puppies, had Blanche (named for being all white) spayed, & loved that dog until she died in my arms at 15.5 years old. One of the best dogs ever & she came with "extras" ... lol

Well, she was acting very lethargic out of nowhere, gums pale, we took her to the vet and it turned out she was bleeding internally from somewhere, they did surgery and and found cancer on her spleen and liver. They took the spleen out, and we tried a new cancer drug called neoplasene but it didn't work. She was alive for about a month after her surgery then we had to put her down. Looking back I probably should've let them put her to sleepduring the surgery, but I didn't want to give up on her if there was a chance she could be given more time with the cancer drugs.. I didn't find out until after, my vet said white shepherd's are prone to that particular type of cancer.She was the best dog I've ever had, smart,loyal,and a big goof . Imiss her terribly.

+Christine Y People think if you pour used motor oil on a dog with mange it will kill the mites, it might kill the mites but also destroys healthy skin. Take to the vet for treatment.

I wish I could take them all. sometimes I want to say to some of these multimillionaires who buys fifty cars and twenty homes there many people and animals without homes and starving do something worth while and am sure there are some that do. I see it when i watch the shows that there are alot who care but not enough. I love animals and always wanted to go around and take them all from the street I saved three that have a great life. hopefully start to foster now. it is great for people to foster who cannot afford to own a pet, even though it's hard when someone adopts that pet ,you are doing a great deed in helping animals who need homes.

I'm broke as can be. I can't even afford Taco Bell and yet I take my 12 year old chihuahua in to the vet every 7-8 months to get her teeth cleaned (because they could cause a heart problem if not) and all the tests to make sure she is healthy enough to get put under. I spend at least 400 bucks to do something most people think isn't necessary. And I have to save up for it all year! And people can't take their pet in when they are dying and in extreme pain?! Good God...i hope your chiwawa doesn't develop anything else that cost more than a teeth cleaning...because then maybe you will feel what this family felt---in order to save all my animals i would literally have to sell my home, my car, etc and it still would have not been enough for every treatment that could save them...i'm sure the family did not expect such a terrible disease to afflict this dog---the family absolutely did the right thing by taking her in which i guarantee they were not jumping for joy...this story really angers me that they put such a negative light on the family doing the right thing when they couldn't afford the animal...so many people just kick the dog to the curb--open a gate and say bye bye but they did the hardest thing and the best thing for society by turning it in...so don't jump to conclusions we don't know what that family was facing that they weren't able to manage giving a dog a painful bath every day three times a day? i mean, do u work? do u have to make dinners, check homework, do laundry, pay bills? who the hell has time to do 3 baths a day and then if u cant who the hell can afford the cost of what the vets charge to have them do it with no guarantee the dog will come out alive and well and able to come home after the end of it...

As a foster for cats, they give you so much love and it really can be hard to see them go. I've cried over so many furbabie's finding their forever homes many times. 1 they are getting their forever loving family/home and 2 because I'm going to miss them so much. I currently have 8 cats and 4 were not adoptable so they will stay with us for life. Very happy for Gemma and her babies. :D

I've also at one point been a "foster" for cats, but the ones that I have now - 5 of my own - and one that I rescued last year [April 2015], I am actually fostering, because I don't really want to keep him. The 5 of my own cats keep my "plate" pretty full as it is!! The place where I was working as a security guard, is where I found this last one. He's a B&W short-haired cat, has the prettiest eyes....but man..he also seems to be a bit short in the obedience category. I named him "Oreo" because of his coloring. Whenever he's being quiet, I have to go looking for him, cos he is always into something!! He thinks he's a mountain goat & always climbing all over everything! I tell people " Oreo is a Happy Meal short of the french fries!" He's had all his shots and now just needs to get neutered. I'm going to have that done as soon as I can afford it. Maybe once that happens, he'll calm down ... I have 2 litter boxes they can use and ...well....you can guess what he prefers to do!! Drives me crazy!! Why were 4 of your cats "not adoptable" ?? Just curious...Take care! :)

My dog had severe typhoid when she was 4 years old. We treated her for a long time, then she got breast cancer. We were able to get her surgery before the cells kept multiplying. Many years later we found out the cancer wasn't all gone and it spread to her spinal cord. She started having seizures and started having trouble walking. We had to put her down, she was 11 in human years and I was too. She was the best dog ever and I remember crying each night for weeks. She was protective, loving, and she had a gentle old soul. I still miss her to this day.

My rescued Malamute looks almost identical to her. Not only this, he was trained to be my service dog, and Zepplin is the best dog of the 8 rescues i have ever had. A rescue is usually more affectionate and loyal than most. Take the lead here and rescue a dog (or cat) from your local shelter and be ready for a love affair that will last for years to come.
