Rescuing A Boulder Retaining Wall From Collapse - How Much Did It COST???
Using my Yanmar vio80 Excavator to repair a collapsing retaining wall that was failing due to sink hole. I Also used my 2019 Ford F750 dump truck to haul material to the job site. | DigginLife21

Nice work Todd. Curious as to why you didn’t use the thumb on the machine at the beginning to pick up the heavy rock? Learning a lot as I watch your videos.

Another great vid, very recently found your channel and i'm a now a big fan. I have been operating eqip for others for a while now so i know how to do the work, but the quotes and billing is a new area now that i started my own gig. Been out on my own a year or so now, bought a triaxle and do local hauling to keep busy between finding jobs of largely the same nature as you. Love to be doing mostly equip work, but at least with the truck i have something i can be doing to keep income flowing. Your vids are a big help in in figuring how to better find jobs, quote them well, and leave the customer happy.

Great Video! Helped me a ton. Can you discuss how you find jobs? Once established, this seems to be easier than when starting out. This is an area I do not see many people discussing as much.

200x8 = 1600 so that's close to what I'd do. The difference being I have to rent for now until my business starts to take off. So I would have been 500 less for the machine, 175 less to rent a dump trailer, 100 for stone, 50 for fuel. 825 off of 1600 leaves me with 775 and I take into account 38% so 295 off of that leaves me with 480 prifit.profit. Which is right at what I've determined is the minimum I want to make on any job after costs (500). I need to make 1k a week to pay the bills. I Can always get 2 jobs a week. That's why 500 after taxes is my minimum. On a good week I can make 3 or 4k after taxes. Half of that goes into savings for a rainy day and the other half is saved to expand the business (saving a down for my own equipment.)

One thing a lot of your followers may not understand is a small business even Airbnb or rental homes or small construction business has great tax exemptions. Or maybe I should say write offs. Cell phone, computer, tools etc is required for business. I never paid out of my own pocket for tools for many years. I would just tack the tool on to a job in my labor and viola. I had it. Maybe I work too cheap but most times I still get the job and still the lowest bidder. Found great success in spec home building. No customer to deal with. They like it, they buy it . Don’t like it move on!

I'm honestly curious what the right size excavator is for a given job type. My friend house recently burned down after one of the many hurricanes hit the gulf coast. We rented a 10k lb kubota excavator to both clean up the debris and clear the lot behind him (he also owned the lot behind him). Initially we had planned to have a stump grinding service come out and clean up the stumps so we cut down the trees without trying to uproot stumps. Later we found that the stump grinding service was in no hurry to get to the job and we only had 3 days left on the excavator and I decided to start uprooting them. We had some large pine trees and large oak trees stumps to remove so I got to work. Being it was a 10k lb machine I wasn't honestly expecting to be able to get them all. But we were able to. The machine certainly struggled a bit to get them out. Often requiring we dug pretty deep to get down far enough on the tap roots that we could break the stump free for the Pine trees and the oaks held on to a lot of dirt and was hard to find all the roots so we could get those pulled. Without a ripper to break the roots the holes we created were quite large and backfilling the holes was a concern, but we got it done. For a job like that I think a larger machine would have helped immensely. However, I was considering purchasing my own excavator and currently my trailer is rated for 7k lbs and my truck at 10k lbs. If I got my own I'd only be able to get a machine that is about 6800lbs or so. What sort of jobs might that limit me to? How do I know if I'm biting off more than I can chew?

This is an awesome video cuz I've got a potential project /problem almost exactly like this. Moving and shuffling rocks on a hillside will definitely make a person sleep like a baby at the end of the day and eat like a teenager in a growth spurt at supper time!! I have a question. is the material you're filling in the eroded area with a cement and rock mix or is it just crushed aggregate?

I'd say you were very fair!! When someone bids a job they should always include rental wether they own everything or not!! That way you're covered. Rentals costs normally pencil out pretty close to having payments on everything. Good safe gaurd.

Thanks buddy great information. I think the only thing I would have done differently was to put some fabric down to hopefully keep the dirt from running out of the rock when its raining. That's what I've been taught to do. But at the same time u dont want to mess up others stuff that's good. So in this case great job and good and wonderful info. Thanks for sharing this with us.
