“Wedgie in the Human House of All You Can Eat Buffets” - I’d watch that B (for Bat) movie. (Who needs Bruce Wayne and man-toy batmobiles?) Boy did his life ever take two 180 degree flips, getting whacked on an invisible wall and stuck and then being borne away in soft cloths to the fabled HHOAYCEB. No wonder his head is still spinning. Great name, as always.

Clear glass panes are dangerous to birds and bats. glass is not visible to birds. For bats, echolocation fails. Thank you so much for everything you do for this beautyful creatures, Meg.
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
Bats can echolocate the glass because it reflects sound like water does. The flying-foxes don't echolocate though - they navigate by sight. The reason there are these glass pool fences is so the yard doesn't look so divided - because they present no visual barrier for the owners.

@@wildflower1397 I really don't want a rescue van - I like Lola (my car) and that I can park her nearly anywhere. If I had a van, I'd just have a van of more chaos than Lola and still wouldn't be able to find anything. I had to take all the rescue stuff out of my car for this trip north that I'm doing - and really it was endless. I just kept pulling out more and more stuff. Eventually I left all the towels (there are only about 30 of them strewn around) and packed everything on top of them and used them to stop things rattling. When the branch came down a beehive in the fork also came down, and the bees blamed everyone but themselves for this, stinging the bats and the humans indiscriminately, and this awesome bee keeper and rescuer came and calmed the bees so the bats could be rescued. The beekeeper came back yesterday to see the batties raised back into the tree and we got talking and he was fascinating. I like the idea of bees and bee keeping, and apiarists and honey but it's never going to be my passion so my fascination is tangential to my real passion - but he was really interesting because he had great knowledge about sugars and glucose, fructose and the long chain sugars which some of the darker honeys have. Glucose is absorbed from your stomach and mouth and gums; fructose is absorbed from your upper gut and the medicinal honeys like manuka honeys have long chain sugars which are absorbed from your lower bowel and can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease or keep it in remission. Quite the trick shot he managed in getting himself stuck like that! Glad he wasn't too difficult to get loose from there and that he's recovering in care and looks like he'll be a survivor. I really have to wonder if there's something pool owners could add to their fancy glass fences to make it easier for bats and other wildlife to see. My sister's dogs would run right into our glass patio door at full tilt when visiting, so we put a couple of decorative window clings at their eye-level and that was enough for them to register the door was there and not smack into it when they were excited.

Bats are just amazing. I didn't know anything about red bats until I watched KZbin videos. KZbin is a major learning medium and I'm so glad because I hated public schools. We were poor and kids would make fun of how I dressed because I didn't have many clothes. They talk about "mean girls" but boys are just as vicious.

He would have tried to get out of the pool fence area after crash landing in the enclosure. These bats navigate by sight, which means they can't see the glass pool fence; they don't echolocate so they can't see the clear glass.

I know in a much older video, you mentioned that rescuers had moved from bands to microchips. Is that still true? Do they chip all released batties? If so, do you have access to a scanner/ has he been scanned by by someone? I know you quite reasonably said he was exhausted from being in the sun and from struggling to escape. But, I also wondered if he had possibly been in care at some point and maybe recognized that you were there to help? Maybe because he seemed to settle at your talking to him... I'm quite aware that he likely was just responding to your upbeat tone, his own exhaustion, and yummy sweet glucose, but I can't help wondering, all the same. 🙄 Wedgie: Is that scary furless human the wonderful Battie Mommy Meg?
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't chipped or banded. He was just exhausted. Some people don't band or chip their bats on release - but really this was just a normal behaviour for a newly rescued bat. They're either calm and flat (exhausted), or they're aggro and feisty, or somewhere in between.

@@Megabattie Thanks. It's too bad that not all rescuers band or chip. But, I can understand why. Part of why I asked is that he was an alert adult male that was quiet. I've seen so many of your videos where they are either combative or "flat" with a glazed look. But, then again, there was that one recently that was so very quiet and passive that he had you worried - you were even hand feeding him. But really, he was snookering you while biding his time for an escape! Thanks again for sharing!
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
@@melissajarvis4829 Banding requires a licence, and that's not easy to get. Microchips cost money and not everyone or every group can afford it. The one who was fooling me into hand feeding him was a juvie who was just terrified. Wedgie was just a quiet and exhausted boy who had no oomph left in him. He's more feisty now he's with the other bats.,

@@Megabattie That's good to hear that he's doing better and with others! I figured cost played a major part. Like I said, it's too bad, but an understandable part of rescuing. When faced with either helping and feeding more animals that are in immediate need, vs banding/ chipping all, being able to help wins. Especially when faced with the extra challenges of the last few years - fires, heat waves and drought. Again, thanks for all you do!
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
@@melissajarvis4829 To get a banding licence you need a supervisor/trainer and it has to be an A class bander doing this. I can't get anyone to actually commit to training and supervising. I gave up years ago. The problem with microchipping is that you can't see on the outside that they're chipped, whereas with the bands, the members of public may report dead banded bats on the ground, but an unbanded bat is just a dead bat on the ground.

I'm assuming the glass fence is for aesthetic reasons but it looks like it would present a lot of the same issues for window strikes.
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
Yes, for aesthetic reasons. It doesn't make the yard look small, and it's the most common form of pool fencing now in Australia. The glass also cannot be climbed by kids. I guess there's bird strikes but I don't rescue anything except bats so I don't know the stats. We often get pool enclosure entrapments but they don't all hit the glass - they might come in and bellydip for a drink and end up in the pool and get trapped.

Hi Silver. I'm Meg, the rescuer - thanks for the compliment. Welcome to Megabattie. I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I put the fate of the animal if I know it, in the descriptions. I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

I looked up their frames again & they have extraordinary bone structure they almost look like they could walk around amazing they spend their lives upside down!
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
Their legs are rotated 180º at the hips so the soles of their feet face upwards and their knees bend backwards. Their legs aren't designed for standing; they don't have the pelvic or leg musculature or bone strength to withstand compression stress.
