I just found your channel and you've done some great repair and hardware videos! I don't know how I've managed to go so long without seeing your stuff.

You can fix the socket with glue, but I would recommend to replace it entirely, since the broken part holds the entire cooling solution and it would probably break again from the stress
@TheXev
@TheXev Жыл бұрын
yeah, removing the socket and replacing it with a new socket would really be the best way to repair it.

@@TheXev if you don't have a tool to heat up the hole board at once, don't even try it, this type of repair requires experience and even that so many things can cause even more problems.

Cool boards from that era. Also have some Slot 1 motherboards with the same Rage+ES1373 combo. One even has YMF715 instead of ES1373, which is great for MSDOS.

Very nice rescue and superb 20min of Entertainment. 1. Try bios patcher to add missing features and cpu support. 2.Add a voodoo2. Perfect match for the Rage pro. 3. Replace the cpu socket or use a cooler with 3 hooks. An AMD socketA boxed cooler might fit.

I tried the bios patcher but it didn't work with this bios. Doesn't it only work with Award bioses?

Hi Sir! Awesome video as usual! I would say to source the not modified BIOS by gateway, and burn it with an Eprom programmer, we know that when the bios are modified by some companies, they hide some settings in order to be less prone of user bad usage
@scrap_computing
@scrap_computing Жыл бұрын
Yeah I tried that one too. There is a very similar board, the MS-5182 (AL11) which is not a gateway board. But it had the exact same issue!

I usually replace the entire socket if there's a latch missing. Not really easy, but the result speaks for itself.

Nice video! I have by now gathered a collection of nice AGP video slotted PCs ranging from LGA775, Socket 478, Socket 370 to Slot 1 and top tier AGP video cards. I am very much interested in the Socket 7 and Super Socket 7 systems with PCI video cards and ISA sound cards even though they are slower. These are getting rarer and harder to find. It is more of a challenge to restore them as there is more variety and individual board peculiarities.

Me too, but a super socket 7 board requires an AGP slot. So, this is a socket 7 board.
@BaguetesGarage
@BaguetesGarage Жыл бұрын
@@xero110it's Super Socket 7 anyway because the integrated video card uses the AGP bus and also has 100MHz FSB, it just doesn't have an AGP slot available for video card upgrades.

Is there a more recent BIOS revision available? Might have to find a Gateway specific version, considering this is an OEM version of the board. Very nicely done on the repairs and mods, though! As for the socket itself, the only real fix is to replace the socket outright, unfortunately, but perhaps a heatsink with a different style clip can work with the remaining tabs.

I'm curious to know how you knew which 74-series chip was required for the ISA slot. Was it just knowledge you have accumulated from working with other boards?
@scrap_computing
@scrap_computing Жыл бұрын
All boards with ISA slots have the same 74LS245 or 74ALS245 chip. It is a pretty standard transceiver chip.
@esc2dos
@esc2dos Жыл бұрын
How did you decide to use the 74LS245 IC when you installed the ISA slot? I have a P4 board that has an optional ISA slot and a commenter mentioned to me I would need to add an IC ( which is exactly what you've done in this video coincidentally).
@scrap_computing
@scrap_computing Жыл бұрын
I checked a couple of boards with ISA slots and all had this exact chip (either the LS or the ALS variant). I also checked the wiring and it was identical. In my board installed the 74ALS245 one because this is the one I could get from my local electronics shop. I think it is faster than the LS and should be a drop-in replacement in most cases.

@scrap_computing

The ISA slot just needed a 74245 chip which is common in many motherboards of that era.

I wonder if the BIOS has some sort of code from the Gateway to disable cache on CPUs that weren't originally issued with their computer. Kind of an anti-upgrade trap. Is there a generic MSI BIOS you can flash?
@scrap_computing

I tried the one from MS-5182 which does not seem to be an OEM bios but it had similar issues, though I didn't try all versions, perhaps that too is an OEM board. not sure. The weird thing is that it won't even work properly with a Pentium MMX!
@xenonkay
@xenonkay Жыл бұрын
The MS-5182 was indeed another OEM board. The BIOS can't activate the L1 cache if it doesn't even recognize the family of CPU, and it's not unheard-of for manufacturers to omit code in the BIOS for processors they don't intend anyone to run on their platform even if the socket and chipset technically supports them. I wonder if that board even supports Cyrix or Winchip processors, since Gateway probably sold it exclusively with AMD chips. You could possibly mod the BIOS to add Pentium MMX support with a tool like BIOS Patcher.

you could try using super glue and baking soda, and if you are going to take the time, file it down some, it makes a strong; i guess you could say "superior" bong. if you are into mixing, you can try super glue and some apoxy mix with some baking soda.

In the past I've fixed broken socket with the mix of baking soda and super glue (thanks for this life hack goes to Thech Tangents / AkBKukU), and so far it is holding a very heavy radiator from the Socket A era surprisingly well. Maybe even better than old and brittle plastic of the original socket. I'd say that it is a pretty safe solution, if it doesn't have a weak spot. My first attempt had one because one layer had too much glue and too little soda - and it cracked in that place as soon as I've put the radiator on.
