Hi Otagrosa I rescue bats, which is my volunteer job and my passion. Unfortunately it's quite a common rescue scenario in Spring, to rescue live babies on dead mothers who have been electrocuted on powerlines. Welcome to Megabattie, I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies. You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

The mum bat was electrocuted on powerlines. She and the baby fell, but she didn't keep the baby safe - the mum was dead so in death her wings just closed like that because that is the relaxed position for the wings. The baby grips onto mum because that's what they do - to let go is to fall and die. The mum's body protected the baby but the mum was dead - her body just naturally does that.

This is wonderful, thank you for what you're doing. We raised a little foundling this summer - a tiny common pipistrelle we called Roy. He was no bigger than a man's thumbnail when we found him. Only a few days old. Somehow he not only survived, but thrived. Feisty little fellow. We even managed to teach him to fly, but couldn't figure how to teach him to hunt so we found a rehabilitation centre where he could learn in safety before returning to the wild. We totally bonded with Roy, and he with us. It was a lot of effort and learning for us and a huge emotional investment but 100% worth it to see him grow into a healthy, strong beautiful bat. I think it was about the best thing we have ever done. I loved that tiny creature with all my heart and we still have his portrait on the wall. Well done you, and good luck to your adopted baby. She's clearly in a really good place.

Hi Sea Gorilla, Thanks for caring for Roy and learning the joy of bonding with a bat. I don't keep any of these babies; I rescue, stabilise and move along to a carer. @Megabattie3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucy For me - the mum bat is dead, so there is no point being distressed by this because she is dead and can't feel anything anymore. I don't have to be emotionally crippled by her death because she is out of it all now and my focus is on the living baby. The baby is stressed because she's being taken off her mum, but this is the only chance she has of life, so this is my focus. The baby will quite quickly adapt to life in care and will go through a creche system to be released back into the wild with her age mates when she's old enough. When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. They learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.
Oh how sad, breaks my heart. But so thankful someone called it in.

When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. @@lord6780 All bats are potentially both harmless if you leave them alone to their habitat and dangerous if you are bitten or scratched by them. Fewer than 1% of the population may be infected with one of the rabies family of viruses and you can only contact it if you are bitten or scratched by a bat which is actually infected. If a bat is infected with the rabies virus it may be aggressive and fly onto you. Some are aggressive and some are passive when infected, depending on which part of the brain is affected. A few years back a child died from ABLV (Australian bat rabies) after being swooped on and scratched by an infected flying-fox in Australia. Meg, First of all, I want to thank you for teaching me about flying fox bats. I have watched "all" of your videos 3,4, 5 times. I can't find anyone that is sharing these rescues on any regular basis except you. Especially your style which I love. Plus you educate very well. You are very consistent. You can tell how much you care for these flying foxes. I love flying foxes because of you.
@Megabattie2 жыл бұрын
Thanks PH - have you really watched them all a few times? I have 3600 videos up, only a few hundred of which aren't bat related. 3600 videos is an awful lot of watching time. Yes I'm the only one sharing on a regular basis - usually daily but I am having a little break this week. I'm the only one who appears to be able to video as I go - I've tried lots of cameras, but for me, the best I've found is the video glasses - but they have their drawbacks. I'm glad you are learning about these amazing animals. (point of pedantry - they're either flying-foxes or bats, but they're not called flying-fox bats - it's a bit redundant - which means you now know something more LOL) Apparently I'm an acquired taste, and not everyone wishes to acquire my particular taste - so it's noice that you like my style. I fell in love with flying-foxes 15 years ago and when I'm excited about something I can't bear to not share around my excitement.

@Megabattie4 жыл бұрын
@@overratedabby2810 I joined wildlife rescue to rescue and rear parrots. I love parrots. But my vet said that my birds might get sick from wild birds and that I should do possum joeys because I had the time and skills, and not a lot of space. So I thought I'd do possum joeys and they would be cute and fluffy. But at the basic rescue course they said - you don't treat baby possums (joeys) as your babies - you feed them and change them and put them back. You cover their eyes when you feed them so they don't become too humanised. And I thought that sounded like work not fun. Hard work and not very satisfying. The next section was on bats - and with baby bats, you're allowed to love them. In fact, you have to love them. With possums they're solitary animals and don't hang out in families or groups or colonies. With baby bats, they're colony animals - they live in large groups and they're noisy and social and gregarious. Bat pups are used to a lot of interaction with their mums and with the colony; they're smart and interactive - so you need to be their mum - you need give them stimulation and social and emotional interaction. I loved the babies instantly; I learned to love the adults and appreciate their finer points. Somehow I ended up rescuing and caring for bats exclusively.

Hi Herberto: The mother died - she had no warning - she just hit powerlines and was electrocuted. She didn't think about her baby because there was no time to think. The baby was protected by mum's body, but mum didn't choose to protect her, it was an accident of physics and biology. What saved the baby's life was someone seeing the dead mother and reporting that she was alive and moving her wing occasionally, which was the baby moving under mum's wing.

@@paulg3336 Hey Paul - the baby may go wandering if there is no milk in mum's nipple for long enough and mum doesn't respond. The mum bat was dead when I arrived. She was electrocuted on the powerlines above when she flew into them in the dark. The baby, Sultana, survived, was raised by a carer and released with other orphans of the season via a creche system.
