The correct setup for the 180sx is the cherry hatch stock SR20, RB25 box, and 6-bolt Skyline diff. Maybe through in the Link for modern management. You're going to Japan, you don't need power there, all the courses are short!

my thought on the engine decision is put the stock SR in there then if you blow it up it can easily be built over there while you're gone. then do a whole video dressing it up with upgarage parts doing the budget build japan style. find the intake. headers, intercooler kit, etc.

For engine choice for the Japan car, prioritize reliability. If you have total confidence in the cherry hatch engine, go with that. Bonus is its in a car running, so a decent health check, comp test, leakdown test, oil sample and if that checks out, do it. Last thing you want is get to Japan and have a fresh engine issue. It can happen to anyone regardless of machinist, builder, tuner.

Fun fact: the KA was in Japan. They were in certain vans for a few years. I worked as a driver in tokyo for a couple of years and the first time I started up our work van I heard that distinct KA clutch fan kick on lol.

It sounds like no matter what sr you choose, you're going to get it checked at a machine shop. Might as well get one checked then actually build it yourself using some budget friendly but proven pistons and rods. That stays true to the "budget" style build but also gets you a solid engine then throw the rb25 transmission behind it and never have to worry about the drivetrain again

For the 180. Put in a nissan cefiro front sub frame the rb rwd one. It will bolt into the s13 chassis and allow for a rb to be installed. Then build a rb20 with a rb25 neo head and rb26 ITB's built it to 300 hp na high revving it would be a wild build anywhere and one nobody else would have done (except for summit in Australia (i know that was turbo vs na)) if you need more power in sure a link can be set up on a window switch for nitrus and give you the hp your looking for in that 180. Bit the rb na with itb will make for one hell of a sound

RB25 gearboxes are just a little bit stronger as the SR20DET 5-Speed boxes especially by drifting. I never broke my SR20 5 speed also with a bit more power of 232PS while drifting it. Then yours was bad or you did something wrong. Buy a full OS Giken or Speedtek gearset, synchro or dog box one. I bought a OS Giken set and they are at the moment in stock and that are the last ones OS Giken produced, after it is sold out, then it's discontinued.
