Rescuing our timber frame home? | How NOT to build a deck ep2

Continuing on from where we left off - discovering that our 5-7 day deck resurfacing is now turning into a near (if not total) deck rebuild that's likely going to take a couple of months (or more). The rot was worse than we expected, but we are lucky to have at least found it now (and not 5 years down the road). Part of the house has issues as well.
In this video I am working the long weekend on my own, tackling a list of projects to get done by Tuesday morning.
Thanks for watching and see you in the next one!
M 💜💜

I know about wood rot. LP compressed wood siding soaked up water and LP give us $8k compensation. Had the house resided in ABC Steel Seamless siding. Been great. Hail just bounces off. I'm sure your house will be great when you are done. Love the dogs. BTW, I would put some snow brakes on the roof to keep the snow in place. That roof is big ski jump for the snow.

Love your video’s. Nothing fake about it and figuring stuff out as you go along is what makes them interesting. You will probably pay for that mill by milling the lumber you need for this job instead of buying it. Steve should be proud.

I love to see how you look for solutions to all sorts of problems that are obvious to experts. However, the path you take to reach a solution, maybe longer, maybe sometimes proving to be a dead end, maybe imperfect, is just Yours. I love to see you trying to solve problems on your own that mankind dealt with long ago 😉 And the greatest reward is (I'm guessing) the feeling Tom Hanks felt on his island when he managed to start a fire 😀 "I have made fire!"

Man your a trooper!... thats one heck of a big job you guys are doing... BEEN THERE DONE THAT!...Mold, mildew, rot, bugs, spiders, ants, smell, rotted wood, wet gyprock, wet insulation, rotted nails, screws,...... make sure to spray Vinegar is better at killing mold because it can work on both porous and nonporous surfaces. It also terminates molds at their roots so the mold won't return and is also safer than bleach. You can even combine it with baking soda to make it more effective. (I got vinegar info off internet)

Raise the forks a bit higher than needed and curl then down just a tad so you can see the tips of the forks and you will learn to aim right away, and then your skills will do the rest. My neighbor was a mentor to me starting when I was 13 in 1977, he was a self employed excavating contractor, he taught me everything, he said to me one day that “there ain’t no such thing as can’t, I left can’t in Texas in 1963 when I moved my family to Flint” and you surly fit that description.

Hey ; When i saw that flight of stairs off your deck it reminded me of something important , my cabin is a fire lookout type of building , before walling it completely up , i had a flight of stairs that got me up to the observation portion , "top". In the winter , they had to be cleaned off , their height was 25 ', I fell off them not once but twice luckily not getting seriously hurt . I don't intend to be a doug downer but please put up a cable railing on the decking out @ the Cabin . I dried that sucker in , fashioned a new way up & retired those damn stairs .

About a month ago i saw one of your videos on KZbin for the very first time and i was instantly hooked. I dont know if you ever really have the time to read long comments, you are such a very busy lady. However in the off chance you find the time to read my silly and kinda humbling comment i would like to say you truly impressed me at every step. I have watched every episode since you first started and it took me till today to finally catch up. I was a farmer and carpenter but broke my back years ago and cant do it any more. You are so Creative and innovative that i am constantly in awe. I cried when i watched the video when you fornd scout and silly me im tearing up now. I am so sorry to bring up old wounds, he was a good dog. I truly appreciate how much you love your animals, including south gate. Im from Wisconsin here in the USA so i truly love the winters you get. Im gonna try and send an actual email to you, keep my fingers crossed im horrible with any of that kind of stuff. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderfully beautiful life with us. God bless you and your family.

The builder of my log home decided he was going to turn the deck off the loft Master bed into a sun room. So he built a wall with large windows in it and sat it on top of the large beam under the deck. Unfortunately he hadn't capped that beam before doing this and everytime it rained water ran down and sat onto the largest beam (8inches by 14 inches tall 30 feet long) eventually rotting it out. I found this while removing that wall(we wanted it to be a deck again) and had to replace that beam and rebuild the deck. What a PITA! I feel for you.

Looks like you have a big project ahead of you. I've been a builder for 35 years and built many decks and I have found deck 2 wall spacers the best product for attaching deck ledgers to the side of structures. The best part is the ledger is spaced away from the building envelope so air and water can pass through......no flashing to fail.

You are right, larch gums up blades something horrible, I live a little south of you and have the same mill, I love the wood, it’s strong and rot resistant. There are two things I do that help a lot. When I can I fall the trees in winter, and when I’m milling and the blade begins to gunk up I have a squirt bottle of diesel that I spray on the blade while it’s cutting down the log-works pretty slick.
