WATCH OUT FOR FUEL CUT! Stock fc ecu cuts fuel to rear rotor when higher than stock boost is detected.(anything over 7/8 psi) And because you’re running an open downpipe it will definitely boost more than that. Get a fuel cut defender or aftermarket ecu.

@@karoliskazlauskas1213 totally get what you're saying but if you've worked on a stock turbo on these things, he's running right at potential issues here.. as the stock wastegate on a S4 turbo is a single 16mm hole. might be able to fit your pinky down there? for what it's worth, it basically doesn't exist once you've got a decent exhaust/intake on there. beyond that, I've heard reports that new, completely stock S4 still had boost creep issues in very cold ambient temperatures, hence mazda put the fuel cut thing in there to kinda(?) protect it.

The front engine cover was changed mid year by Mazda. If you order a front seal kit for an 87 it may possibly be the wrong kit. I had a 7 just like yours and it had a pinched seal in the front cover even though the new kit was just installed. It caused low oil pressure readings. I doubt that is your problem though. Love to see this FC being restored.

0:42 OMG those front shocks are so toasted. Makes sense considering how long it sat of course. Dangerous with that extra low downpipe though! Did you consider replacing the O2 sensor with a 3 wire? Would still function normally, just heat up much faster and hopefully improve idle and cruising etc. For the gauge cluster, I have often found it's a bent, weak, or damaged pins in the connector. Easiest thing to check. Hopefully that cluster is easy to get out. I know you probably know a lot of this, but whatever we all know I like to comment. Woulda been brave to go to the drags! Hopefully soon. Good work Dave.

The RPMs staying up could be the dashpot located by the throttle body. It is there to prevent the throttle body closing abruptly. It has a adjustment similar to a throttle cable. Some RX-7 owners eliminate that and by doing so the exhaust some times randomly will will pop small split second flame when you go off throttle. The best thing to do is adjusting it to see if it will solve the problem of the RPM going down so slow. If you want to eliminate the dashpot it is best to wait for idle problem problem to be solve first.

Don't forget too, the open exhaust will pick you up almost 5 psi and 50HP on a TII!....but you will hit boost cut almost immediately, so a boost cut controller will be needed to electronically cap the MAP sensor's output below cut levels. This has the undesirable effect however of making the AFM the computer's only source of airflow measurement, and once you exceed the flap door's ability to open further, fueling will no longer increase. Increasing pump pressure and swapping in bigger secondarys, or go old-school with an AIC or F-con to bump the fuel.....yea, pretty archaic stuff, but so is the OBD0 Jetronic EFI on those old RX's!

I could be wrong, or not remembering correctly, but I remember my Turbo II tach and speedometer stopped working due to a reverse switch or relay or maybe sensor, I don’t remember exactly. If your reverse lights aren’t working, that could be it. It’s located on the transmission and Rotary Performance bypassed it somehow, as I didn’t have the time or money to have it replaced (it’s hard to get to), but I did have my instruments working. The only downfall was I had no reverse lights, which I didn’t care about.
@plav032

That exhaust is going to cause boost creep. Considering your stock ECU will cut fuel, its a very risky mod to save a few bucks on. Also you JB welded an air bleed plug, which you could have fixed with a 2 dollar plug with an o ring.

Horn problem 90% most likely it's the "CPU" - cold solder joint problems. Long black box in driver's side kickpanel - redo solder joints that hold the plug socket in the center of the box. Do your turn signals / hazards work? This CPU also has circuits for those things.

The oil pressure and temp sensors are down by the oil filter pedestal on the rear iron. With the key on, try touching each of the wires to ground and you should see the gauge cycle. if it does, then get new sending units. You can see both of them at 9:00. Since the oil gauge works, Id suspect the cluster is good and power is flowing. The hanging idle is pretty common when you start removing things when running the stock ECU. Its best to pull and plug everything, including the non-vacuum dashpot, then do your best to set the idle speed with the idle and bypass screws. Either that, or leave it all intact and keep everything working as stock(which can be even harder!)
