Dave i will be honest, when I first started watching your videos I thought wow he is a smug cocky guy who thinks he is the best. But the more I watched the more I realized you push yourself and your employees to do the best, be the best and be proud of the work they do. Your hard work is what made you successful.

My Dad was Dave. My Dad got married in 1964 and took his wedding money and bought a Mr. Softy Ice Cream truck on Long Island, NY. My Mom handle the cash, Dad handle the truck and product. It got big, he bought another truck and another truck. It got so big he sold it them all and took the money to purchase his first salon. My Mom went to school to cut hair. Then he bought another salon and another. Then he sold 4 of them and bought the shopping plaza where the original salon was. Then he bought more and more real estate. Dude retired at 54 and lived off rent from shopping centers. He's 91 now and still active as hell. Lots of great advice that turned me into a wealthy man. Listen to experience, don't be afraid to take chances.

Avoid debt! Stay out of it. Drive a cheap car and only upgrade when necessary. Work your ass off in your 20s and 30s so you can take it easy in your 40s. Try not to fall for material things in the consumerism that we're surrounded by. I'm not saying you shouldn't have fun, but suggesting that other things are way more important like family and kids. Don't get caught in the trap or keep up with Instagram.

@@leechburglights Thank you, I appreciate it! I'm trying to sell my current truck and save up for something more reliable. I'm working retail now since i just got my first job, but i plan to move to pipeline work and maybe military to go to school for maybe auto tech. I expect that I'll have to finance a home one day but i never want to have aa crazy truck payment so I will try.

It wasn't until my early 30's that I learned my lessons from bad debt and finally lived comfortably below my means, giving me extra money to save and invest. Don't go into debt for dumb things like transportation and never use your credit cards for emergencies -- that's a trap that will ensnare you for life. For all the success stories out there, just remember there are a dozen people who tried the same thing but failed. That doesn't mean don't try, it just means see the whole picture and manage your risk accordingly. Do yourself a favor, open a Vanguard account today and start putting $50 - $100 per month into VOO and don't touch it for the next 10 years. As you make more money, increase your monthly contribution. Get used to saving regularly and watch your balance ebb and flow with the economy.

@@northernforever818 do yourself a favor if youre planning on working in the trades join a Union apprenticeship as soon as you can. Your local UA union (Plumbers, pipefitters, boilermakers, steamfitters, pipeliners) is something you might want to look in to. after 4 or 5 years youll be a Journeyman making the big bucks with a nice pension plan, safe working conditions, and youll be able to get a job damn near anywhere in the country.

I remember being nineteen, I was always going to open my own shop. I turn fifty next year, and last month I FINALLY started MY shop. Prepare to do it in XX years, study, plan, prepare, and DO IT!

Dave, I watched this video and had to comment. I hope you read this and it gives you some joy. For years I've struggled. And I mean I've STRUGGLED. Post divorce I lost myself. Not to drugs or alcohol, just the inability to know who I was any more. Homelessness. Poverty. Christmas with my kids where the only tree we could afford was sticks hung on the wall with strings and lights and a couple small gifts that I'd gotten from goodwill... No cars. And all that comes with it. My dad built race cars. But I never learned much from him. Somehow my son gained his passion for automotive, and he's truly got an eye for it and the mind. He looked at me once day just under a year ago, while we were living in a tent, and said, "dad, I want to open a shop with you." I knew NOTHING about cars! NOTHING. I once called a valve cover a "head"... Ok. So you have an idea of where I was at. But I decided to put in the work. Got a job at Walmart in the auto Care center and started studying stuff on my own. Then went to Les Schwab working on suspension, brakes, etc. Well, that's ended now. Lost that job for better or worse. And at the same time I traded a car for a truck, made a mistake and found a lot of work that needed done. Work that I couldn't afford. But I kept it running. Then bought an 07 Mercedes e350 for $600 with a bad intake manifold. Supposedly that was all (besides having to replace the sunroof, which was easy enough). Had to fix that, then found a whole string of other issues. Electrical systems, relays, fuses, ground issues, fuel pump failing.... A real mess. Mechanics have misdiagnosed EVERY SINGLE ISSUE I've brought to them this year. Every one. So I've learned, diagnosed, and fixed everything myself. Now friends come to me, family, and others. They ask for help. I give it. I change their oil, maintain their vehicles, diagnose, repair, and service them all. Jeeps, Audi, Hyundai, Honda, Jaguar, etc... All of them. As long as it's minor enough, I do it. I do more than anyone ever asks. If I'm doing brakes, I clean every surface, check runoff, ensure everything is functioning, check all fluids, belts, etc. make sure oil and differential fluids are good, and clean under the hood. They trust me because of what they see when they're done, and because when I'm done, they drive that car more confidently. And here's the point of all this. My good friend just passed. He was an older man with a shop at his house for 30 years doing custom automotive. I was one of two people he allowed in his shop for a year before he passed. And now, having lost my job days ago, I'm terrified. I'm not finding any local shops with a reputation for excellence, who care for their customers genuinely, and care enough to go above and beyond. I will not tolerate second rate service. But, my friend's wife let's me use his shop still. And is open to discussing allowing me to rent it from her to work out of part time so I can go to school and get my certifications and the knowledge I still lack. But... I'm absolutely racked with terror. And then your video... Opposition is an opportunity with options to overcome. And your story. Thank you. I know what I have to do.

I spent 25 years as a home designer/builder, but my first love was wrenching and I always wanted my own shop. 14 years ago I hung up contracting and started a small 2 bay shop. My rep grew very quickly and I'm overwhelmed with work, but at the same time I'm content with my little shop. I'm 61 and have no intentions of expanding, actually I'm starting to wind down and spend more time doing the other things I love. God has been so good to me and I'm grateful for the skills He's blessed me with. Thanks for all your vids I really enjoy them. God bless!

Your story is close to my Uncles when he started his Ambulette company. Converting vans to Ambulette's. I'll be sending this link to him and his son. It was a family business. Husband / Wife and Son. I worked for him for 2 summers and I called it a sweat shop. But the best times and stories and more importantly learned how to use tools and machinery. I do believe working hard and always get up when your knocked down. I believe that's the hardest part. Many people give up once they are knocked down a few times. After working hard for many years sells the business and lives well in retirement. The true American Story.

I proudly worked for Goodyear as a mechanic back when I was in my 20's for quite sometime. I am 60 years old now and I wish my boss would have been like Dave, because he really knows his stuff and I probably would have learned a lot from him. id like to think after that many years you could build a good starter customer base so you could indeed open you a shop, a good mechanic will always have a job. if your a bumper to bumper tech youll probably be just fine, and especially if you live in a populated area.

Worked for 3 different companies over 25 years and was scared to death to leave and run our own. Realized i worked harder for myself than i ever did for someone else. I was led to believe i was an average or below average employee, while watching idiots with less experience move up faster. Come to realize I was well respected and needed to stand up more for myself. God works the magic in many ways.

In life, most good men have a good woman with them. Her being there makes him want to be the best he can be for her, for their family. Many say I am fine on my own, but the truth is you can reach much further with love as your motivation. First rule, SHOW UP, do good work at a fair price, even if you have to take the hit sometimes to make things right. In the long run, you will have enough work that even 30 hr in a day is not enough. This man has let his blessings flow to his work force, in the respect he gives them, the pay and the benefits they receive.

Hearing how the boss lady responded to your decisions and risks is honestly priceless to me. A big struggle to starting my path to success was getting my wife to get on board. I refused to do so unless she was and a few good opportunities passed because of that. Finally, I took the leap. I just did it and then asked for forgiveness. She stuck by my side and said “if this doesn’t work you’re gonna go for a canoe ride without a life jacket.” I see this story everywhere. She’s standing on your ladder to success, and for good reason; sometimes we go out and buy two acres of raw land with no way to develop it. But as we cast out, they reel us in to the right spot. Find a lady that takes care of you. Best advice I’ve ever gotten.

I have a shop and worked my ass of, never did i raise my rates. Now i still have my shop on weekends and evenings besides my other job. And now i have raised my rates so much. Happy customers, good workflow and im getting so much more money. Good advice to raise your rates. If you are working your ass of raise them, because the customer wants you and not the low price. Love your videos!

This is such a powerful video for me... I can't tell you too much about why, but you hit the nail on the head when you talk about fear. It can gab hold of you so tight. Only now in my later years am I starting to feel more confident and brave about starting my own business. Thank you for doing this. You're truly a good man.

I started my first business with just my hand tools had to buy all my equipment one piece at a time... My second business it was a little bit better but still started with nothing... Just started another business about 6 months ago and pretty much. Starting with nothing, But a dream... My grandparents were entrepreneurs and they taught me the same values. If you don't work, you don't Eat...
