"Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine around Carsten Standfuss - a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt.
The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

I remember one night he woke me up (drunk on moonshine) and told me that he was building me my personal submarine.... I was like 5 years old. I waited for years without daring pester him about the progress he was making.... Eventually I realized grandpa was a big drunk and probably forgot by the next morning hahaha.... To the North-West sits The Kingdom of Norway, the North-East sits The Kingdom of Sweden, all have their Royal Navy's going up and down the Scandinavian Sea to the Wadden-Sea into the North-Sea. Not to mention all kinds of ships going trough there from the Republic of Poland and of course from the Russian Federation. Electronics and general compromisses, which were made during construction phase to make the sub cheaper, are the main source of headach today. The max. operational depth of the sub is 250m. Theoretically it's also maximum for sat diver operations. Currently our maximum lock-out depth limited by the abilities of the recreational divers in the crew somewhere at 40 m. The Diving chamber is a completely stand-alone unit, so the rest of the crew inside the submarine goes normobaric.

this is an awesome machine. it it can go underwater it can also go into space like the Nazi's did with their modified U-boats. This would be great for observing underwater life, and if it's depth was sufficient it could also look for lost ship wreckage and maybe help with finding lost aircraft survivors etc. certainly help with distressed subs et al. The fact it is not military makes this a kind of Linux project where everyone could help with designing a better one. I am interested in the fact it is German. Yet again they appear to be historically the most mechanically able to produce such machines.

Fantastic achievement! It looks as if the 'pressure hull' is not actually pressurised, is that right? or is that just one compartment with access for the divers?

There's a separate hyperbaric diving chamber in the bow. The rest of the boat is normobaric.

This is really cool and mad props for the effort. Would it have not been easier and cheaper to refurb a surplus sub?
@Wrackzeichner
@Wrackzeichner 9 жыл бұрын
The sub is designed as a mobile diver bell. There are only few submarines in the world ever built for this purpose. The costs du buy them are much higher, than the hardware costs of Euronaut. Well, the thousands of working hours are not paid. :)
