My Dad was from Prestwick in Ayreshire (came to Australia) and I still have relatives there in Ayr itself, who I have visited a number of times. It’s a beautiful area of Scotland.

This is lovely. I am researching and have family from Ayrshire. Daniel (Donald) Matheson was a highlander from Ross & Cromarty in the 1800s. He married Margaret Jardine in 1848 in Muirkirk Ayrshire. Quite a distance to travel at that time, so I’m curious to learn circumstances if I may be able to… I know that Daniel and Margaret gave birth to twins, and one survived. They were baptized in Muirkirk in 1849, then they emigrated to America!! Hoping to trace further back and learn the role Ayrshire played!

My great- grandfather's first wife had a grandfather called Hugh Reid ( 1754 -1809 ) who co-founded the Batchelors Club in Tarbolton with the brothers Robert and Gilbert Burns. They were all Tarbolton farmers.

I have a Great Great Grandfather who was said to be from Ayr but was a merchant mariner who spent most of his adult life in Queenstown, (Cobh) County Cork, Ireland. His birth said to be 1816 but I had not seen a record for anyone of his name with the date. His son my ancestor immigrated to the USA in the 1880s and my family here in America since. I have never been to Scotland or any UK place other than the commonwealth country of Canada on our border.

Why does every website say that my surname AYRES comes from Ayrshire? Most of my ancestors were travelling gypsies from places hampshire, berkshire and kent to name a few. Any chance you could make a video on best was of tracing traveling gypsy families ancestry as its quite a hard thing to research due to poor records?
@georgeenglish84823 жыл бұрын
Hello Roxy The most likely origin of Ayres is a nickname. 'the son of the heir.' Possibly a variant of Ayre or Eyre. Remember that surnames were formed many centuries ago, almost certainly before your ancestors became travelling gypsies. George

Clan relations could be quite nasty at time. I just returned from Scotland and do recommend going To Ayrshire. Spent 10 days in total, 2 in Glasgow, 2 in Edinburgh and 3 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland. If anyone goes to Scotland, go to Ayrshire. Final night at Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh just across from Waverly Train Station. Go!@@targetglen
