I remember doing this heat gun and thermal paste repair job on my PS3 by following a youtube guide back in around 2008. It was something that felt way beyond my capabilities but I had nothing to lose attempting it. I was so damn proud of myself when the PS3 fired as normal. I was always worried about having it running for too long after that, but it kept me going until I got the slim version. The slim eventually developed issues too, usually disc drive related. The PS3 gen had terrible reliability problems.

@w0lf4llo843 жыл бұрын
Using heat isn’t going to bring it back to life fully. It may be temporary but there’s no telling how long it could last. But most likely that issue is going to happen again. There is a diagnostic tool that you could purchase and it reads the syscon chip on the motherboard. Then it gives you error codes and that will tell you the issue. But considering this is a G01 and the temps get very high on this model I’d say that it’s probably the GPU solder bumps since the underfill was ment for lower temps but the PS3 worked the gpu like no tomorrow. The issue was eventually fixed in late 2008 with a higher temperature underfill. The underfill issue caused the solder bumps to crack under thermal stress so it might need a new gpu but it wouldn’t be worth it on this type of model Edit: also when you didn’t fix the thermal pad it made me die inside

@w0lf4llo843 жыл бұрын
@@Cristian121212100 not for these older models. Yes they are the same exact caps between all the phats but the model that are the K01 and below have a bad underfill on the GPU ment for lower temperatures. The early phats usually get very hot too. The RSX usually fails because the solder bumps between the die and the substrate crack due to thermal stress. So yes it could still be the Nec Tokins but there’s no real way of telling unless they do a diagnostic test

Great video, very nice to watch, however as I'm sure many have told you in comments already - this isn't going to solve the issue. The CPU and GPU are not at fault here, the issue has been mistaken to be the solder balls cracking or overheating for many years, but only a few years ago we discovered the real cause of the issue. The actual culprit was the low profile NEC Tokien capacitors, which are the pairs of black rectangles you see a pair of next to the CPU and GPU on either side. The problem is they slowly stop working over time, causing the YLOD. The reason we never discovered these were causing the fault was because applying heat to the CPU / GPU as you do in this video also heats up the NEC caps, which temporarily makes them work again from the heat - this caused people to misdiagnose the CPU/GPU to be at fault. The real fix is actually relatively easy. :) You heat up or scrape away at one or two of the NEC capacitors to remove them. Personally I recommend using a small knife and a soldering iron to destroy and melt away the capacitors, instead of using a heat gun to desolder them, since there is many tiny capacitors and components located nearby them. Once removed, scratxh away at the board below to reveal the copper, since there is a large grounding plane around them, and then replacing each NEC cap with 4 tantalum capacitors at 470uf (iirc), soldered to the positive the capacitor used, and the revealed grounding plane. After replacing one or all of the NEC caps with 4 tantalum caps, the PS3 will reliably work again :) The best part is that this is a lasting fix, it won't stop working after 10 years or anything

Ylod was diagnosed wrong for all these years, maybe because of the 360 RROD (and that was diagnosed wrong too, it was not for a break connection between motherboard and GPU, but a break inside the GPU itself). The problem it’s not the gpu or cpu chips but probably one of the NEC capacitors gone bad. With reflow you just force this component to work, but the issue will appear again. And when it will happen, check for a short in these capacitors.

This reminds me of my childhood PS3. After years of love, it suffered the same fate (although instead of refusing to come on, it would just die randomly when in use. You can imagine the frustration). We knew how to fix it but didn't have the means to (and my dad doesn't feel comfortable with soldering anymore since his eyesight is bad at times), so whenever it got so bad we couldn't stand it, my dad and I would take it apart and put the motherboard in the oven. Not the most glamorous fix, but it worked for a while and we got some extra time out of it. We still have it somewhere and I've always hoped I'd be able to have the means to fix it c:

Reheating the solder on the CPU and GPU isn't going to help, the real issue is the NEC capacitors (the flat black ones). They become slightly re-conditioned after the heat-gun treatment but the problem is going to come back. You need to replace the NEC capacitors with identical resistance and capacitance.

This. Reflowing should not be recommended as the first step anymore this is been proven a few years back. Reflowing doesn't "fix" them the majority of the time.

Muito bom. E a bateria? Foi trocada ou ficou sem colocar? Achei excesso de pasta térmica. Mas muito bom vídeo.

Great Video but you forgot the thermal paste under the IHS plates. Also, use a HDMI cable bro :D that gameplay was like 480p

Working in a bottle depot, back in the day, I identify with each instant I see Restoration EG's fingers protruding through his gloves. I know that effort.
