I love the variety of colors of walleyes. Up north in the Boundary Waters, I've caught ones that were almost black on the back with a transition form a deep gold to white on the belly.

The variation is cool for sure.

Is this main river or bays?
@JasonMitchellOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Main river but they are letting a lot of water out now so the ice is changing a lot. Check the ice if you go.

I've fished it a lot, all the way back to the late '70s. In the spring of 1997 (winter of 1996/1997), the majority of the baitfish were flushed out of Oahe, along with many of the Walleyes. After that high-water period, Oahe went through some of the lowest water levels in the history of that reservoir; it was major low; it was so low that many were concerned that the river channel would be exposed. The fishing on Oahe was nonexistent; there was nearly nothing to be caught. The few Walleyes that were caught in the early 2000s (2003, 2004, 2005), were so starved that they looked like snakes; that was a bad time for Oahe. During that time, campgrounds such as "Little Bend" weren't even mowed; I can remember driving there and it was growing up to weeds. There was virtually no activity on Oahe. It didn't begin to fill again until the spring of 2009 and then it was filled full again in 2011. There is some fishing on Oahe now but it isn't anything close to what it once was; during the 1980s and the early 1990s (prior to the spring of 1997), we would catch 8 lb. Walleyes like they were in a bathtub; those were good fishing times. All through the water level cycles of Oahe, the fishing at Pickstown (Ft. Randall Dam) remained solid. I'm convinced that many of the 8 lb. Walleyes that we caught at Ft. Randall, were fish that were once in Oahe. I can remember in 2005, 2006, 2007, we were catching monster Walleyes at Pickstown, while the fishing on Oahe was nonexistent. My favorite reservoirs on the Missouri, are Oahe and Fort Peck. I love Oahe but there is so much water that can come into that reservoir from the west that it can be a tough situation there. It might always be difficult to realize any consistency on Oahe because when that one fills with water, there is no choice but to start releasing it. That body of water is huge and holding back the amount of water that it holds, is dangerous. The dam at Pierre held in the spring of 1997 and again in the spring of 2011, but I've always wondered if it will always be able to hold. That's a lot of water. This is a lengthy post but perhaps someone who has been fishing the Missouri for years, would like to add additional information. I find the Missouri to be fascinating. It's my favorite water to fish of any. I fly fish in Montana also but the Missouri is my favorite. Nice job, Jason. Great show. Keep 'em coming.

@@JasonMitchellOutdoors You betcha, Jason. I try to keep up on the history of those reservoirs; I love it. Thank you for continuing on in Tony's path. I miss him, terribly, but you're doing a great job of keeping South Dakota and North Dakota in many of your shows. Tony died way too young; we should have been able to have him for another 15-20 years. He died at 68; that's too young. In 1991, I was able to fish with Tony and John Gilkerson out of Sunset Lodge (north of Pierre); that was wonderful; we had fun; those were the days when we were catching six and eight pound Walleyes nearly all day long. Again, thank you. Keep 'em coming.

Close to where you were fishing I caught a Salmon one year that was tagged. Even caught a couple tagged Walleye’s there over 20 years ago. I like that lake for the scenic views. I don’t like up north the land of no trees. Yuk
