Resetting Cummins DPF data after changing the DPF filter

Manufacturers require the ecm to be notified when a DPF has been replaced. This video shows how to reset the DPF information in the Cummins program.

Very nice video. Kindly advise...If I change my dpf filter only to a used one that is only 1 year old from a used part dealer, and I install it on my truck, and I will re-use the same electronic components like the sensors,circuit board, do I still need to reset to inform the ecm if I dont have any engine light?Im just replacing this since my dpf is 9 years old and I got this one almost new that is only 1 year old.I however dont want to change it if it will create unnecessary codes after installation.

I think it should be fine to replace it and not reset the computer

@@alreyindustries Thank you for your input glad for quick response.I will keep you updated once I change the filter when it warms up. By the way I clean my dpf filter at home with garden hose and some non degreaser solution.Do you approve this cleaning option?Have you cleaned dpf with water?

What happens if you don't do this and only do a forced regen when you replace the DPF? Will it throw the CEL?

I’m pretty confident that it will NOT throw a CEL. However, I’m only speaking from experience. I don’t know the actual rule on this. I have had detroits throw a code later on down the road because they are basically programmed to be replaced after a certain time or mileage interval. So if you do not reset this after you replace the DPF, once the programmed time or mileage elapses, it MAY throw a maintenance code asking for the DPF to be replaced or the data to be reset. But in my experience I have not run into this problem with Cummins. So I think you should be ok.

@@alreyindustries Appreciate the information. I work on a handful of 6.7 Cummins in Freightliner applications and after I replace/clean the DPF & DOC I have only ever forced a regen with a handheld tool and then sent it on its way. It has worked so far in the Cummins application but was curious in other manufacturers. I only work on a few so buying software like Cummins Insite isn't worth my time.

@@greasygamer3379 Have the Diesel Laptop handheld but have heard the CanDo HD Code II Handheld works well too. The Diesel Laptops is advertised as working on more platforms but we only ever use it on Cummins/Isuzu so cant speak for other platforms like it advertises. They are the same price point
