i haven't seen a game with this much "wow" factor in an extremely long time! i remember seeing a promotional trailer for this once and being instantly impressed straight away. as a coder i imagine the way it works is by pasting a model into the world at the exact point where you're looking? if so, it's a deceptively simple concept with some really incredible execution...

I am super excited you had time to play some of this one. I was also playing it yesterday and found it mind blowing. It really gave me a sense of wonder and "newness" I did not think was possible to experience anymore in games. The last time I had a smilar feeling was the first time I played Portal. I am no coder, but I think I have a basic understand of how most games work and exist, but the photo mechanic in this game breaks whatever logic and understanding I had in my own head. Also, I just realised Portal is 16 years old 💀

When you are placing a photo, you are placing the whole 3d model, it's just doesn't have any collision yet. This allows you to move it around to place it where you want, once you place it, the collision turns on so the player can walk on it. I'm guessing a lot of work went into the camera snapshot of the 3d models in the game, and allowing the player to duplicate and then place a replicated part of the level. Think of it as one of those games that let you freely build your own structures. Only instead of moving walls, doors, stairs, and other building blocks, your moving a copy of geometry that exists in the level.

​@@rominovaa6592 thanks. very interesting. i had wondered if render textures were part of this mechanic? i believe this runs on unity? i used to use unity but switched to godot a couple of years ago. toggling collision is something i do a lot in my game. do you know how the geometry cutting mechanic works? that's currently beyond my skill level, although i'd like to learn it one day.

I would make it so that when the player copies a part of the level, all the empty space in the cubic area the player copies becomes a sort of erase/destruction tool that removes the textures and collision from whatever it overlaps with once the 3d model copy is set in place. The exact nature of Viewfinder's main game mechanic, and how it's so polished is what makes it really stand out. We are not breaking down a few set destructible walls or removing cubes of materials in a blocky world and putting them elsewhere. We get to choose the exact volumes of the level that gets erased and replaced, and it all takes place so quickly.

So, rewinding and perception puzzles and environmental puzzles. Looks like a fun mechanics-fusion of Life is Strange, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Portal, seasoned with a bit of Stray atmosphere.

Very interesting game! I'm actually just as interested in the technical aspects of the game as the gameplay. Replacing parts of the level in such a dynamic way has to have a lot of technical challenges. I wonder what engine the game is made in.
