Jared, the low res textures are just a result of bad pop in. I've tested this and basically sometimes the high res textures have a problem loading in for certain textures, mainly fabric. But if I wait or reload the area, the high res version will pop in. You could see this especially with the fabric that shows the Ashley piggyback areas. And yeah it annoyed the hell out of me too, so you're not alone in that. I found that if I turned off the extra terrain setting, there would be way less pop in and the textures were way more consistent.

OG re4 is a game that works well with what it's doing and is also still unique and special in it's own way. RE4 Remake is a different game with a different interpretation and take on the same thing the original did. OG re4 is irreplaceable. For example, the indestructible knife allowed for a gameplay where a lot could be done with very less and that made for it's own kind of great rewards. A constant weapon that if mastered, could lead to increasing accumulation of resources to make certain section easier or even use them to attempt crazier feats for the player. Hell, mastering that knife promised an escape from the need of tighter resource management or the need for resources at all, which was an amazing reward offered by the game. It was an amazing reward of it's own and even presented a brand of survival horror that relied more skill, reflexes, speed, understanding of the machanics of the game and patterns of the enemies, deeper understanding of the game level structure and environment after repeated playthroughs as opposed to puzzle solving and resources management (there maybe more and there may be some overlap but the point is that the survival horror presented is different). The knife in the remake is now just another expendable resource that needs to be managed, even if it does new things. It's just a different game. Also Leon being able to move and enemies being adjusted around it does not make for a better game, just different. Leon not moving in the OG and the way the enemies were adjusted around allowed it made for a different kind of game that had consistent patterns and therefore predictable patterns to their enemies and enemies combat design that is SUPER fair (Good invisibility frames, good crowd dispersal, slower and more comprehensible invasive enemy advencements, enemies announcing themselves whem closing in from invisible angles and generally not attacking from out of nowhere, sounded projectiles and maybe even more). The game is almost mechanical and mathematical. That is what makes it special in it's own way and unique even as a 3rd person shooter in general. That is why it is almost irreplaceable.

The craft system is a nice way to obtain the ammo you really want instead of what the game gives you, but it add a new step and also fills your inventory with junk. In the original, even in professional i rever really was out of ammo (thanks partially to savvy knife use). I was carring most of the time 20 or more shootgun shells, 20 or more rifle bullets, multiple grenades. The only ammo i was missing was magnum bullets but i guess that worked as intended.

The cracked dialogue and bizarre tone whiplash is the heart and soul of the og game, I don't even think it's that far off from a lot of stuff in previous games. I just don't get the opinion of disliking camp and character when it's legitimately done well and isn't even a thing that is oversaturated in gaming. There's already a million other shooter or horror games where everything is serious strictly due to pre-conceived expectations of what that type of game should be like. To me that weird tone skating is the main draw of the game in a sea of media that is entirely focused on checking arbitrary boxes. RE4 is like James Bond vs. zombies, maybe it goes a bit further than that, but it never goes so overboard that it becomes Austin Powers vs. zombies. Look I'm just sayin' not one single time playin og RE4 did I say to myself "damn, I really wish this guy had PTSD from shooting an explosive barrel in a giant crocodile's mouth 6 years ago."

It added nothing while taking away an actual facet of his character. I think that might actually pan out across the whole game, the Remake might have been updated to the current "accepted standards" but I strongly doubt its going to last the same amount of time as RE4. Not in the same way that the original REmake has anyway. I've been playing this religiously since it released. It's even the first game I've ever preordered. The gameplay is close to perfection and I like the changes to the overall pacing, although I will say I prefer some parts of the original as far as music and atmosphere goes, but for the rest of it the Remake supersedes it in atmosphere and environment design. After watching several of his videos like that 4 hour long "Every RE clone" (which was a waste of time), I've found that this dude constantly contradicts himself. He'll recommend trash because a game has moderately kind of potentially decent story, he'll complain about not having enough influence in a game but then criticize another for making things too easy when making things accessible, he'll complain about having no way to defend himself in a game but then also say that there's too many ways to fight back, he will complain about how bad a game is but then say "I know this is surprising but hear me out" and will still tell people to play it. I don't take what he says seriously at this point, but his videos are still as entertaining as Michael Bay's Transformers movie to me. They'll give me a good laugh here and there with some of the outrageous shit he'll say.

RE4 was indeed my first introduction to Resident Evil so it actually worked out pretty well that I didn't need to know much about the previous games to enjoy it. I am definitely not biased either as I have played the original like 10 times and it is one of my favorite games to this day. I had a great time with the remake and loved a lot of the changes, but there were a few disappointments for me. The best change was the new level designs especially with how they integrated backtracking. The village was the most noticeable and it was great. Remaking the lake to serve as a way to go back and collect treasures or complete side quests was much more interesting than the original. Including more merchant side-quests was a nice touch although I wish there was a bit more diversity than just hunting rats or shooting medallions over and over again. The special monster hunt side-quests were great though. The knife was mostly a plus for me. I liked being able to do stealth-kills, parries (though I never really had it down to an instinctual level either), or use it to take down the enemies that picked up Ashely without accidentally killing her. The durability was a nuisance, but it really stopped being a problem once you got it upgraded. I almost never had it break in the castle especially after I got it fully upgraded. I do agree that Luis and Ashley were greatly improved. Both felt like they contributed much more to the story and were much more well-rounded. Smoothing out a few of Ashley's more annoying moments like her panic attack causing her to run away from Leon made much more sense and fit with the overall terror of what she is going through. The time you take control of her is also much better and honestly feels more terrifying. The Las plagas was also much better integrated into the story and the journal entries from the villagers and miners as they slowly lost control of themselves did a much better job of conveying how terrifying they were. I actually felt really bad at one point knowing that I was killing a bunch of innocent people even if it was a mercy kill at that point which was something I never really felt in the original. I also agree that the stuff they cut out was a good idea. Even with the cut stuff, I was running out of fumes on the island and actually just one-shot the final boss with a rocket launcher because I was just done by that point. On the downside, I do have to disagree with you on Salazar and Saddler. The radio conversations between them and Leon was great to me and really helped flesh them out. Salazar acting arrogant and superior, but slowly loosing his cool as time goes on was great to watch and I loved Leon's witty one-liners that pissed Salazar off. Saddler becoming more actually like a crazy cultist that truly believed that the las plagas was some holy being was an interesting change, but his lack of actual appearances or encounters with Leon and Ashley before the very end of the game kind of diminished him to me. Yeah there was some nice foreshadowing and you saw him using the las plagas in Leon and Ashley, but he still felt almost tacked on rather than an integral part of the game like he was in the original. I also was not happy with the new shooting range that the merchant set up. The game itself was well-done and better than the original, but the reward being some tokens that you exchanged for random prizes was beyond annoying. It got worse once I realized that you could get duplicate prizes meaning that all the hard work I spent on getting high scores at the shooting range just went to waste. I do agree with you that I did not like losing the laser-sight. The biggest reason I stuck with the original pistol was because I liked using the laser sight for it. I had also already spent the spinel's on getting the laser sight not realizing that other pistols couldn't use it so it felt like it would have been a huge waste of spinels not to stick with the starter pistol. The starter pistol having the high-critical exclusive boost meant it wasn't a huge loss, but I really wanted to use the red9 as it was my favorite gun from the original. The last thing I did not really like was the regenerators. I don't know why, but they actually felt less-scary in the remake despite being more dangerous. Them being able to move quickly felt like it kind of actually cut some of the tension as opposed to them moving slowly, but surely towards you. The sound they make wasn't as intimidating either. Sorry I wasn't expecting this to become such a long comment. To summarize, I did have really good time with this game and Like a lot of its changes. I am absolutely planning to play it again sometime in the near-future, but overall, I think that Dead Space remake was a slightly better remake than this remake was.

The merchant request format and the semi open world design of all three areas is something I hope the eventual RE5 Remake does as well. It's why my first playthrough took 19 hours on Standard. I searched all three of the maps for as many things as I could find. I'm an RE5 OG fan and I know that game didn't have a Merchant or Duke, but it'd be cool to introduce one. But I'm in the same boat about less rat hunting and more requests like The Wandering Dead.

Honestly, I do and I don't miss the laser sight. In the original it made just about every gun pin point accurate and fairly similar, but in the remake the guns all feel unique and different. I think having the laser sight for only a few weapons really makes the game feel a bit more realistic and more serious, I also really like that its a choice if you want it or not.

I don't agree with RE4R being more fluid when it comes to movement. It's fluid animation-wise but original is more snappy when it comes to movement and shooting. They added tons of contextual animations such as getting up from grenade shock or barely scraping by a grab similar to RE2R but that usually delays player inputs. I also noticed a slight delay from going to shooting > knife parry to shooting again which is a strange decision imo. One of the reasons why RE4 felt so fun to play was how snappy it felt imo. Character never does anything outside of what player asks them to. Quick turns also felt "more quick" in original imo.

Capcom didn't rehire Jolene Andersen as Ada because she joined a union. Lily Gao, the new actress, openly stated that she finds seductive Asian woman trope to be racist and stands by her modern portrayal of Ada. A shame, because it was important to get Ada and Leon scenes right, since they are the only bits of storytelling in RE4 that are important to the overall story. Since Leon and Ada have 0 chemistry in RE4R, it's like RE2R never happened and their moment together in RE6 is now impossible to achieve without serious rewrites.

33:10 I actually disagree with the opinion that the reticle was changed out of laziness. They already had the laser sight in game for a couple of guns, meaning it was implemented without issue. Adding it to the other guns would likely have taken very little time at all. They probably just preferred the new reticle for most of their guns tbh. But I do think it was a mistake to not add the option to use the laser sight on other weapons.

33:11 In response to how staggering works in remake, the SG-09 attached with the laser sight mostly negates this issue, since all your shots are considered "focused in" with a higher crit chance, and the exclusive upgrade giving a 5x crit chance COMPLETELY negates this issue. I'd have to argue with you saying that the red9 in the best gun in the game. In the original, sure, but in remake the quick draw on-the-move ability of the SG's laser sight combined with the crazy crit upgrade makes this gun crazy busted if you can land your shots. Players coming from the OG game that swear by the red9, I heavily recommend you try out the SG this go around. I'd suggest it be the first thing you use your upgrade ticket on. I feel like most of the engine issues could be explained by the fact the game was still being designed with the ps4 in mind And also I think the laser reticule and headshot and kneeshot changes were purely for game feel or balance, staggers being random actually keeps the players more engaged since you have to pay attention and react quickly to staggers, instead of knowing they are coming, that also adds some decision making to them because in the og you would always go for them since they were so strong, but by being random you have to evaluate if you have enough distance from other enemies where you could afford a 3rd hit stagger instead of a 1 hit one. I havent played 4 in so long I couldnt tell if it was a change for the better but playing RE4R I had no issue with it personally. Loved the video as always.
@SittingBass Жыл бұрын
Agreed on both points. Not being able to rely on a stagger keeps the gameplay more tense and forces you to maintain a dynamic approach to combat. A guaranteed stagger from a limb/head shot opens the door for some serious cheese when you have access to the kind of precision aiming a mouse provides. Playing RE5 recently with a friend made me realize how trivial combat can feel when you can easily set up the stagger to melee cycle. It felt so...automated and , especially because of those i-frames, I never felt much tension or sense of danger.
@onceyougozach2607 Жыл бұрын

It's alot of Evil shit going on in this Residency in rural Spain.. No? Don't see how the premise is that far fetched.. When the Nemesis T Type is indeed the by product of a "parasitic infection".. The Alpha Ne parasite gives the Nemesis increased intelligence , speed , strength , problem solving skills , hunting capabilities, and the ability to use weapons.. Just my 2 cents.. Yeah RE 4 is different for sure ,but ain't that different.. It's still following the same formula in a sense.. If you just really think about it. 🤔 Hell in the O.G. When it comes to the low resolution textures, there seems to be an issue in the game regarding pop in as others have pointed out. Moreover, it seems that depending on the gpu that someone has, if they run out of vram (and this game is very hungry for it) the game will downscale some textures to make sure it will run. This game certainly has a vram issue because when the ray tracing is enabled on a gpu with 8 gigs of ram or less on ultra settings it will simply crash if you go over the limit. Certainly something they need to fix, but it seems less lazy than how you portrayed this issue. Also for me personally, I really enjoy the presentation and it is more important for the game to look great and perform well than to look AMAZING and have terrible stutters and frame drops.

As a matter of speculation, the "cut" boss fight against U3 comes alongside a peculiar addition: a series of files that seem to go out of their way to establish the "naming scheme" for the U3 bioweapon. Which makes me think that they may not so much have removed U3 entirely as set it aside for Ada Wong's campaign. From what the rumor I've heard implies, the Separate Ways campaign for the remake seems like it's going to be more substantial than the original PS2 version.

31:18 - Oh, I'm gonna have to disagree hard on the laser-sighting thing, if only because nothing is LESS realistic or MORE immersion-breaking than every single gun in your arsenal having a laser-sight for no particular reason than because it's a HUD element, even if it makes zero sense for it to be there... as it did with 90% of RE4's guns. Never mind that laser sights don't make big visible lines like that. I'd rather have an unobtrusive little aiming crosshair. The one that the modern RE HUD design has landed on is nice and minimal, and provides enough feedback on the effect of aim-wobble to be functional. It also ALLOWS for aim wobble to be a thing you need to adjust for. The laser-sight literally just made sure you always knew precisely where your shot would land regardless of wobble (and that is, as it happens, the reason you'd want to buy the laser-sight upgrades in *this* game, too). Your shots aren't more "powerful" when the reticule narrows, just more accurate. As in the other games, the reticule's wider modes just give you an idea of what your spread will look like if you fire without slowing down to aim carefully. But for as aggressive as the Ganado are, I've always found moments to let the reticule shrink to line up a shot when I need to, so I think you're overstating the difficulty of that aspect a little bit.

the red dot not being applied to every gun is not remotely close to laziness of any sort, its literally a decision that informs how every gun in the game is balanced and what purpose each serves. leon and the enemies moves faster in the remake so choosing which gun you will use based on your playstyle is even more important. do you go for a more stationary playstyle with slower guns, more mobile with faster guns, pierce heavy which would require you to be moving quickly and aiming fast etc. all those things go out the window if everygun has a red dot, its not laziness. i have the same sentiment for "headshots not guaranteeing stuns" criticism. the original it was very easy to do the same thing from the start of the game to the very end: headshot/kneeshot -> melee -> knife. i much prefer how enemies get staggered in the remake because 1, it IS still consistent, it just requires more shots instead of the super easy single shot (which made tmp so broken in the original as well) and 2, it makes the encounters more dynamic and keeps you on your toes. so now you have a situation where if you want the melee moves, you have to spend a few more shots to get them, but sometimes taking those shots might be too slow and youll get rushed, so you have to move and then take the remaining shots, its just way more ENGAGING than standing, shoot once, free melee, repeat.
@hikarikouno8 күн бұрын
I remember people complaining that playing RE4 on Wii felt like cheating because of how easy it was to aim with the Wiimote and headshot every enemy really quickly; the developers clearly considered speed and accuracy when choosing to remove the reticle. And realistically, it makes perfect sense for the aiming to change with movement, whether that makes it more fun or not, is completely subjective.

Great review! On the topic of the low rez textures, I think the texture variety is to blame. Even with the recycled assets, they likely have high resolution versions as a source. When it comes to texture budgets, both texture resolution and variety eat up memory. The more you lean on both, the more memory it consumes and this game already has a high memory requirements, so I wouldn't be surprised if the variety of textures is the main cause for the random low rez textures we run into.
@XadePsyconic Жыл бұрын
That's an insightful take and would help explain a lot. The only remaining issue is which assets are being prioritized for displaying low res textures. Smaller textures that are easier to miss at a glance (which there are many) should be a lower priority, and therefore be substituted with lower res textures during critical performance checks. While very large and easily visible textures should continue to load as intended. In my experience, entire walls and buildings look very low res at times (thankfully rare) in this remake, while tiny objects look very detailed when viewed up close. I'm sure that player distance from the asset being displayed plays a large role in this; that logic is not wrong. But something huge like a wall or building at a medium distance is definitely something that will distract the player if it's low res and visible to the player's camera.
@KageMaru10g Жыл бұрын
@@XadePsyconic Yeah I totally agree and also noticed some glaringly obvious objects looks rather low rez. My best guess is these object gave the best returns in terms of managing the memory budget. I really need a code Veronica remake

Seriously feel you in parts here. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the island isn't all that necessary. As far as the voice segments go I think I prefer Krauser's more unhinged interpretation. You did a great job here. Really felt like a fair assessment in every category. This hour went by quick lol

I have to disagree with the laziness on the laser sight. They implemented it on some, it would have been easy to do for the rest, it had to be for balancing purposes

Gonna be the odd man out here and say I don't think Re4make was that good. They changed too much of the tone and aesthetic, the soul so to speak of the original. That combined with some terrible voice acting really shut down any enjoyment of the game for me. To be fair I wasn't a huge fan of Re4 on its original release. I was a fan since re1 and re4 was too different with its qtes not zombies reliance on action and the fact it just shut down a plot that had been building from re1 to recv. 4 wasn't the game for me and as time progressed I liked it less and less due to its effects on the series with re5 and 6. But I can still understand it's fans and I feel bad that the remake isn't as faithful to the original. I'm also still butthurt that they remade RE4 a game that frankly didn't need it, and spent all their resources on it. Then put the damn D team on doing RE3 one of the most beloved in the series and it shows. Arguably my favorite RE games remake got shafted so RE4make could take priority.

Its so annoying that resi 3 had a second chance of being remade only to be shafted with cut content and making nemesis limited in use. And no clocktower. They really f'd up with that one.

I agree. Heck, RE4 2005 was the 1st one I bought at launch. But, I'd rather have gotten a great RE3 Remake instead of one for RE4. Capcom did it just for the money, not out of some passionate desire to update a game that truly deserved it. Code Veronica needed this kind of treatment. And I'd like to see Dino Crisis done in this engine too. Sick of zombies lol.

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE LASER SIGHT!! None of the reviews I've read or watched have complained about the lack of laser sight!
