What really annoys me is how people are now trashing the OG RE4 despite praising it for almost 2 decades and it's not because opinions change over time, it just feels like bandwagon and jumping on the hype train for yet another modern remake game that will not be talked about after a couple of months.

The only games that should need remakes are the ones that aged poorly, but those of course wouldnt be worth it for a sales perspective.

Its nice to see someone talk about all of the things that make RE4 original so good. Sadly for a majority of people who play video games, the modern control schemes are essentially a requirement to get them to play, I have so many friends who have tried to play sh1 or any of the original tank control RE games and they drop them within the hour because they refuse to adapt to or learn how to improve with tank controls. I firmly believe that tank controls have their place in games and aren't just "clunk for the sake of clunk", you can't do SH1's iconic alleyway scene, or any of RE1 with static cameras with non-tank controls. All it takes is playing RE:Make with analogue controls to know this, too, you move to another camera angle, accidentally nudge the joystick even SLIGHTLY and you get stuck in a fun little 360 movement trying to fix your direction. RE4 Original is an incredibly Arcade-y experience, where you have to adapt to the mechanics they give you and learn to improve within them, and sadly most players want to be good at a game instantly, and have those skill transfer over to the next Copy/Pasted Action Shooter they play. This isn't to say that RE4R is bad, but it definitely abandoned everything that made RE4 Original so special. With every new RE remake they ship out, I'm constantly reminded of how glad I am they remade RE1 when they did, where it still stays incredibly true to it's roots, with a few quality of life improvements, instead of just making a new game inside the shell of the old game.

Im mostly a modern gamer and the remake which is suppose to be for the modern generation of gamers i ended up not enjoying it at all, while the remastered on PS4 was the masterpiece everyone recommended me to play. i love playing a new style of game that i suck at at first and have to learn to get good at. i recently began playing doom eternal for the first time on nightmare mode, and it's unlike anything i've ever played, and took some time to get the hang of it. it's a fps but it's own unique genre of fps. but yeah, they have many gamers wanting nothing new, just the same copy and paste style games and remakes of older games, nobody cares for something new and unique. i'm glad we have indie developers now, they are actually more willing to take risk than the aaa devs. i honestly feel like indie games are starting to surpass the aaa market. we got games like hollow knight and dead cells than are more fun and more polished than many aaa games made by billion dollar companies with thousands of employees.

I had a problem with navigating the different areas, which were designed to confuse (and frustrate) players, I believe. In some areas, like the village, the farm, the maze in the courtyard, and the worst: the castle embattlements?! I spent way too much time backtracking, (especially while treasure-hunting) and running around like a chicken with no head, trying to figure where to go, or what to do next, especially with some giant monstrosity bombarding me with stones and wall fragments. Haha. I gave up trying to find my way to the cannon to take him out, and went back to the merchant for a rocket launcher- problem solved. (There's a reason they put the merchant and typewriter right across the walkway from where the battlements begin. They KNEW some of us would run into difficulty.) The rocket again saved my behind with Verdugo, and the blind warriors in the castle dungeon, and the two Colossuses in the furnace, AND Salazar, AND Krauser, finally Saddler's mutant form as well. Though they cheated me on both Krauser and Saddler, because they didn't die after one shot, and I panicked my first playthrough..What fun! Now trying to buy enough first aid bottles to resell later and get the IRL..YES!!

One thing you didn't cover in this video is the remake's visual clutter. In an attempt to make the game feel more immersive and realistic, the devs added so many unnecessary environmental details and post-processing effects, whereas the original RE4 had a very simple and clean artstyle and sense of environmental design that prioritized visual clarity.

Agreed 100% tom. And it's because remakes are completely paradoxical. Because the situations where remakes would make the most sense (artistically) are for games that weren't very good and needed some serious improvements (like resi 6). However, the way it works is that devs select games that were already successful that way they don't have to do as much work, the marketing is baked in, and they can just pile in whatever changes they want with pretty much no bad outcome. Sure I'll complain about it, but who am I other than just another fan. The review sites lap this remake garbage up like brandy

One thing I've learned working in this industry is that very few people consume games at a level far enough below the surface to really notice any of the underlying mechanics. That stuff tends to be reserved for long-term games like esports and competitive stuff that sticks around for years. Single player games like this, no one notices. They've moved on long before hitting the nuance. Great video though.

@@jeckek9936 (woaaah sorry for the dissertation)The problem is not the controller but how Leon moves. "Modern controls" here opposes to "Tank controls"... As paradoxal as it is, Leon used to have better movements in vanilla 4, even with tank controls he felt less weighty or heavy. To the point that in RE4R he feels as heavy as Isaac from Dead Space remake with more inertia when you stop or change direction but with less reasons for it to be that way... It brings a very different feeling to the remake which brings many random elements to the gameplay : shots can miss even if you aimed properly, staggers for headshots are random and mobs can tank 2/3 headshot while still advancing, etc). The Remake is cool as a recent third person shooter, but i also think it lost a little of what made the Vanilla special. It's less...Rewarding. If i had to compare it to another franchise it would be Max Payne. 1&2 had a specific rythm, Max was fast, aiming was even faster, etc. The 3rd Max Payne is a cool game but the gameplay definitely changed to a heavier, slower pace with more tools(cover system, etc). And for many i can understand why people prefered the previous ones. Recent or actual mecanics do not necessary lead to a better games.

There's a delayed reaction in the middle of every melee fight (you get stunned, and frozen, and can't move out of the way) causing Leon to take unnecessary damage. That's BS. And BTW, the ONLY way the enemy hurts you is by cheating: nasty little surprise attacks from behind, or explosive firebombs, molotovs, or axes, thrown from enemies you can't always see at first, or the worst: you down an enemy and he transforms and STRIKES you with his tentacles before you can back up. And WHY do you ALWAYS run out of ammo at the exact wrong time: before you can finish off an enemy from a distance- Again, bs, in my book. Overall, I still love it- primarily for old times sake. So I ended up watching one of my friends replay a certain section over and over again in this remake, because we were trying to figure out if the game truly has stealth mechanics, or if it was merely giving off the false “illusion” of stealth, and as it turns out, it does indeed fall into the latter category. Having the option to completely circumnavigate huge combat situations could have been interesting, as it would not only prevent the player from using up resources, but you may come out of certain segments of the game with an entirely changed experience. Unfortunately, it seems like the stealth was included to make it seem like the game is deeper than it actually is, because you’ll only be able to take out a couple of enemies before you’re thrown into a forced alert mode and are quickly swarmed by everybody. One argument I can already see coming is that the “stealth” in the remake allows you to thin out the herd before entering combat, but the problem is that those few stragglers you managed to take out are immediately replaced by others that spawn in to take their places, so now I can’t help but wonder why the game implemented stealth at all. It is literally useless.

I'm not even sure it's stealth sometimes. Yes you can duck behind an occasional wall, but so many other things scream that it's just a crouch. For example the only way to suplex is to stun an enemy, crouch behind them, and melee. Crouching can also dodge certain attacks. I haven't noticed any any perception changes when crouching either. In fact, you can run right up to enemies and do the "stealth take down", which by the way, can be done on any stunned enemy if you walk behind them. Honestly I'm kinda glad stealth isn't real, else the contrarian squad would complain it's not in the OG.

The entire combat flow is just flat out not fun and frustrating, especially a lot of the bosses. What's worse is I probably made things even worse for myself by playing Hardcore for my first playthrough. But then why the hell does the game literally advertise Hardcore as being a good choice if you were a fan and/or veteran of the original, when as you pointed out, trying to play the game in the style of the original just gets your ass kicked nonstop?

Now that i played the remake again i can notice a few more things: despite the more smooth gameplay the feedback is somehow way worse than even the damn PS2 version. The guns doesnt feel nearly as satisfying, the sounds of the guns, especially the pistols feels more like toy guns and every pistol has the same lazy reused sound, and the shotgun doesnt spray and have the crazy knockback nearly as much as the OG. I also dont like how Ganados doesnt react as nearly with every gun shot. It lacks the strategic feel of the OG. The aiming also feels a bit wonky, enemy AI is strange, it just doesnt feel right to play and somehow is harder than OG professional in the default difficulty... People may say im nostalgic, but when the OG does things better that says something. The remake does a few things right imo, but the thing is everything should be better.

Wanna know what problem I have with it?, there's no second chance of getting an actual remake with new content to the story that's not an expansion of the already known one (RE4) or a remake that doesn't cut off content and doesn't even add anything new to make up for what they removed (RE2, RE3). @@HorrorFan0 I mean, Capcom did a pretty decent job with this remake only (talking about recent remakes from 2-4), but I'm pretty sure it would've been greater if they would've added a new story like Resident Evil remake did with Lisa Trevor. And it's not only that but I'm amazed at how Shinji Mikami added that story in between the base game. It wasn't even a DLC and it showed us how miserable Umbrella could be by experimenting on the mansion architect's wife and daughter and how the kid lost her mom little by little. Those little things made me love the idea of a new remake for the next titles, but that didn't happen and it won't happen again since there are no second chances.

As an og re fan, I agree. The remake is fun, and I like it, not as much as the original, but still. I also agree that the remake is really easy, I'm just annoyed that they make you speed run the game instead of letting you enjoy it. I like playing leisurely instead of feeling like I'm racing a clock and okay, I'm fine with speed running once, but FOUR TIMES to unlock all the S+ stuff is just ridiculous And here silly me thought getting s+ on hard-core right away would save me the trouble of going through assisted and standered mode so that I can jump back to professional again (which I already did once, I did it with a new game plus to unlock Ashley's armor and the sweeper which is a serious downgrade with how terrible the accuracy is even with the aiming assist helmet on, like what? Isn't Leon supposed to be working for the president? Shouldn't he have better aim than that? Like with the pistols, I'm getting head shots all day, but the special weapons are just terrible compared to the original) and as someone who doesn't like speedrunning this game is starting to feel like a chore, but once I get standered done, I'll be able to chill from speeding through the game for a bit, which will be nice because I enjoyed it more when I was able to just play it and not run and bash my way through it

A bit late to this but I got a new rig and was pondering about getting this remake because I absolutely adore the combat of RE4. Honestly, the precise and exact nature of the combat made it so rewarding, especially targeting different weak spots and performing melee strikes. It's a design choice that works so well with the gameplay and setting. I never cared about the "oh it's unrealistic, why can't he move while shooting?" argument, the controls might not be as free form but it works so well with the way that enemies outnumber you. Adding tension and a methodical/tactical way of disposing threats. Honestly, RE5 improved upon this tremendously but the campaign itself is far weaker which was as shame. Although it's unpopular, I think that the combat mechanics of RE6 are amazing as well when paired with traditional zombies. The additional dodges and super cool moves of characters added so much to the game, unfortunately it also suffers from a messy campaign with incoherent gameplay and awful level design. But the game shines so much at Mercenaries. I wish we could go back into a RE5/RE6 hybrid thing. It's a shame that the remake goes for a different gameplay style, I liked the arcade and efficiency of the original RE4.

If I had to put together a list of worst possible games to remake, RE4 would probably be #1. It's one of the most meticulously designed games I've ever played, where every mechanic exists on a very delicate balance with all the others, and one of the very few games where I genuinely struggle to think of any way to improve it. The ridiculous rebalancing domino effect required just to allow for shooting while moving illustrates how well thought out the original's design was. The decision to remake RE4 strikes me as arrogance, it would be like if Nintendo said they're going to remake Super Mario Bros 3. I 100% agree with your bit at the end about selecting masterpieces for remakes being the exact wrong approach. Final Fantasy 7 is an even more egregious example of a remake gone off the deep end because they straight-up changed the genre of the game to be an action RPG. The games that should be remade are the ones that could have been great, but didn't quite reach their full potential, maybe because of lack of polish, bad controls, or something else holding them back. Not taking a beloved game and saying "Alright, that icky turn-based combat or those antiquated tank controls, they gotta go because it's the 2020s and everything's gotta play the same and have no unique characteristics whatsoever." I played the hell out of RE4 and as soon as I heard about a remake (and not a remaster) I was rightfully skeptical. It sounds like all this remake will do is make me want to play the original again.

I feel like "lame" is a harsh way of putting it, but you are making some valid points. I do think while the gameplay is pretty fun here, it will never really live up to the original. Which has been my main critique with this remake since the idea of it has been brought up. HD Project is my kind of RE4 Remake lmao.

I never played OG RE4 until the week before the Remake came out, seeing as I brought it and did a recording for a Let's Play (which I haven't got around to editing yet). And I played the Remake 4 Demo first to see and playing the OG soon after. For those few short sessions, I prefer the OG controls move. Something about the Remake controls... awkward and awful for me. And I just recently beat RE4 for the first time and I love it. Looking forward to unlocking everything now, but I do wish with the Remake it just took the OG and made it similar to the RE1 Remake being near faithful with mechanics and such and updates. Like being able to rebuy your Weapons with all their upgrades and getting Infinite Ammo for all of them except for a few like in the OG and maybe make Leon move slightly faster when walking backwards. The Remake... nothing about it interests me. I love the campy tone and the vibrant colors of the OG and the character interaction were amazing. From what I hear they removed the banter with Leon and the bosses and that kinda sucks. And this whole "serious", "dark", and "realistic" tone take with the Remake... ugh. It feels like other horror games now instead being the B-Horror with Cheesy dialogue since the OG RE1 game. And even if you have the "cheesy lines" in there... it feels more obligated than genuine in my eyes. Nothing wrong with people liking the Remake too, but they keep saying we have two games of RE4 and I can't help but think... why? Why have two different versions? Might as well make a brand new RE game than remaking one. And honestly RE Code Veronica or RE0 I hear were requested the most for a remake... not 4, yet I read topics in Forums they were and I'm thinking when? Also, remakes like Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is considered the definitive edition of OoT as it's the same game with QoL improvements that make it better to play and you get to enjoy the same game again portable. I like both OG and Remake OoT, but the 3D one definitive the one to go. MM3D I didn't like as much with certain changes I didn't like and felt like they didn't understand why fans love the OG MM. And Remakes that are different from the OG, like FF7 Remake, really split the fan base. Was it hard to just keep the original story and expand on it? From what I hear it's like a mix of a sequel and reboot and I'm sure a lot of people didn't want that for a Remake. And yet people will say "You want a Remaster then?" and I want to smack these people. No, I want to have the same game again with improved graphics, QoL improvements in game mechanics, while keeping the core essence, story, and characters the same. Which is why the Remake of RE1 is regard as the BEST RE remake for that reason. Why remake an old game, but fundamentally change so many things about it? Might as well as be a new game. I only got into the RE series with RE7 and playing it in VR for the first time made me love this series soon after. But, I'm noticing a trend lately with these Remakes and... yeah I'm not interested. They're not appealing to me and I never played the original versions before. I didn't mind RE2R, but I wish they kept the Zap and A/B scenario from the OG as I never experienced those and they sound AMAZING. I played the OG RE3 for the first time after the RE3R came out and hearing how fans with disappointed with cut content and changes and playing the OG... man it terrified me and I played RE7 in VR. Seeing how Nemesis chased you. I don't get that same... fear, but fun gameplay. And the characters come off as boring nowadays. Oh well. That's gaming for ya.

Alright, so after I got the remake and played a decent time with it, I dislike the heavy feel of Leon's movement so the old balance is out the window. It's like he's running with weights on his legs. Feels off. The most annoying part is that sometimes when I recover from kick animation I get stun locked by a ganado that raced to get me by the throat. As you can imagine it is frustrating and annoying, happened to me when I also jumped down and the ganado suddenly goes for the throat while being docile. The example you gave with the short bursts they do is true. Instead of only shortening the distance the go full rush on your throat and I cannot counter it as in the original with the shotgun since the stun and spread have been nerfed. Still I follow my old strategy for the most part and now in the castle I have almost maxed my starting 9 mm pistol, the automatic sniper is halfway there and I am saving up for the Striker shotgun hence why I ride milk the starting shotgun. The original had extremely fair and tight system and controls that gave you everything and if you fucked up, you know you fucked up. Here - I only pray that I won't get stun locked when I exit from my kick animation. It's a decent game, but the original still has that fun vibe. Oh, and the story is no longer this B movie style fun horror. Instead of being the Evil Dead 2, the game takes itself too seriously like it's fighting to keep its viewers on Netflix.

I don't see how anybody could look at the shooting in the remake and not see the problems it has unless people are just playing it on the easiest difficulties. The game just looks like it absolutely falls apart on hardcore and above, especially since you can have situations where a ganado will be climbing a ladder, and you can shoot that ganado 3 times in the face and they won't fall off. That perfectly encapsulates the core problem with shooting in this game. This game has a serious inconsistency with shooting feedback and how enemies react that I think overall it has worse shooting than the original because enemies just don't really react to the way you shoot, and in a game where you do a lot of shooting, if your shooting feel sucks, then you've failed as a game as far as I'm concerned. Especially since RE4, RE5, and even RE6 all revolve around the reactions of enemies to your shots, and all three of them carry over the same patterns and consistency. The remake doesn't, and it boggles my mind how you'd remake a game like 4 and not understand the importance of that aspect. Who cares if you can move and shoot if the shooting feels like crap. The game even has the even dumber choice of having the focus shot mechanic that RE2R has where if you aim and wait for the crosshair to focus, your damage and critical chance increase, except in RE4R, it's just critical chance and now stagger chance. But it's utterly stupid to have this mechanic because not only does the crosshair focus reset if you even slightly move your crosshair (which is unlike RE2R where your cursor movement doesn't cancel it), but a crosshair focus mechanic in a game where enemies move much faster than zombies is completely contradictory game design. It just doesn't work because there's almost no scenario where you can easily take advantage of it when enemies are constantly in your face within seconds. I just get this feeling people have low standards, especially the people who think the remake is better than the original, which I just can't see. All people seem to care about is bombastic presentation, and even the whole parrying thing is a mess. Knives having condition was just another aspect of RE2R that should not have not been carried over, and it's bizarre to me that people are averse to the idea of just having a knife as a backup weapon, not some fancy escape tool that breaks after a few uses. There was nothing wrong with the old school low-damage knife because they were reliable backup and just additional free damage, and the remake has done a bad job convincing me what we really need are glass knives that break after a handful of uses. Just give Leon a timed evade instead of a parry.

Most people do have low standards for certain things but weirdly enough, at the same time they have high standards for pretty silly stuff. But let's not pretend that the original had no flaws like how a lot of people pretend that games like SoTN or Super Metroid had no flaws, a lot of the flaws had a lot to do with how easy it is even on professional because the cheese is way too strong such as killing a bunch of them with your "decent damage for a knife" weapon when they are down, TMP their legs or faces for an AOE kick, wait for them to cross a window or after they go up a ladder, etc, they were so good that these became pretty much "the way you are supposed to play" I agree that it is weird that they do not flinch when you shoot them in the head with a handgun but what's the other option really while at the same time keeping it challenging and keeping it fair?. Don't get me wrong i am in the team where i firmly believe that most games hold your hand too much or are made too much to appeal a very casual audience, but i find that some people just cannot accept it when the cheese is taken away from them or when they are forced to play in an entirely different way, i see a lot of casual players complain a lot about difficulty in retro games for example but at the same time i see similar complaints from retro/veteran gamers when they find something difficult in newer games and shout "bad game design" immediately, i find it weird because these are usually the same people who say that casuals complain too much, honestly most of the complaints i hear are difficulty related complaints disguised as something else, a lot of the aiming complains come down to the fact that capcom didn't make it too easy to aim so it would be a "clicking heads simulator" if you're playing with a mouse, it's not inherently "bad" you just have to get good at it, it's a skill you definitively can get consistent at, instead maybe these people should keep playing Standard difficulty or play the original, i feel like these people expected more of a remaster than a remake and do not know the difference. Still, i won't pretend either that the remake doesn't have flaws , but i am open to the idea that i just suck at the game, for example in profesional or hardcore the Salazar boss fight feels very cheap as he hides from your camera and hits you from god knows where, but still, open to the idea that i probably do not understand the proper way on how to deal with that boss.

@@huevonesunltd I'm not saying any game is perfect, but what I can definitely say is that the original RE4 was very intelligent with how it handled most of its combat scenarios and environments, and everything just kinda worked and fell together most of the time. The overall design is still as ingenious as it was in 2005 even today. These criticisms aren't just some 'oh it's too hard' or 'you're just stuck in the old mindset'. They seem like very real critiques or just contradictions in the way the game flows to me, and believe me, I am not averse to new or changing things up. In fact, in your own mention of how they could keep it fair, it's been done already. They were games called Resident Evil 6, and the Revelations series, which both had moving and shooting. And as much as people knock RE6, it understood how to balance the player's abilities and the enemy abilities or strengths, and you are far more agile in Resident Evil 6 than you are in RE4R, but enemies definitely react to what you're doing nonetheless. They don't stonewall your shots, they just hit really hard on harder difficulties as they should. And honestly, I'd go out on a limb and say if we're really gonna talk about skill issues, or things like aim encouragement, Resident Evil games have probably been easier than they've ever been. While autoaim has been a feature in classic games, RE4, RE5, and RE6 were games that didn't provide controller uses any aim assistance like the modern games give players now. You were actually expected to know how to aim. Today though? they're certainly keen to give you a little helping hand which says a lot about how much games have grown and target larger audiences who may not even really play many games. Capcom can't even stop using yellow tape or paint to denote what direction players should be heading. So if people are gonna play the 'it's harder now' card, I think they're barking up the wrong tree just on how Capcom works now.

This right here is what I think about re4 remake. The new mechanics dont mesh well together and the gameplay isnt fun or at least isnt as fun as the original re4. In og re4 both Leon and the enemies were balanced in what they could do but. In re4 remake it slightly buffs Leon while hugely buffing the enemies with better mobility, stronger attack variations, and making them bullet sponges. But the biggest issue with re4 remake is the rng in combat. In og re4 if you hit an enemy on the head you are rewarded with a kick and if you hit an enemy in the leg 2 to 3 times while they slowly walk up then your rewarded with a kick. In re4 remake even if you hit the enemy on the head or leg you are not rewarded with a kick always. This forces the player to hit the enemies head twice or more in some moments which waste limited ammo just to be rewarded for a kick. This tells the player that mastering your aim wont reward you like in og re4 did as kicks are now rng based on every enemy. Stunning enemies now is rng as well. In og re4 if you see them about to attack you or maybe you just want to stop them on there tracks from advancing on your position then hitting them anywhere would stop them and cancel their attack as it should. But in re4 remake this works some of the times and its random when it does. Numerous times I have hit an enemy on their chest while they were in a attack animation and they flinched saving me from their attack but also I had numerous times when the same enemy does the same attack animation and I hit them in the chest but they tank through it and I take damage. This rng in combat is what really messes up the enjoyment for me as it's out of my control and any action I due is always going to have a random outcome. The og re4 followed rules that never changed and were constant throughout the game and you knew what outcome your actions in the game caused. In re4 remake it doesn't follow rules as the outcome of your actions in combat is rng based. Is re4 remake a bad game? No. Though it isn't good either due to these reason in my opinion. Its average. That's why og re4 is the better game by far due to fairness and rewarding players for mastering the games mechanics.

It's a 10/10 game and perfectly perfect the way it is. It has some of the best level design in video games. One of the greatest horror action games of all time. Remaking RE4 is like trying to remake the Mona Lisa. You're saying the original isn't good enough and you think you can make it better. I find that rather insulting. Mikami isn't at Capcom anymore. You aren't going to make RE4 as good as the original. At *best* maybe you'll create something comparable to the RE3 remake or FF7 remake. AKA a completely different game with the same name.

@@TheElectricUnderground Yeah, RE6 could definitely have benefited from a remake. Remove all the quick time events, fix the bugs, lock the framerate to 60, fix the boss fights, rebalance instant kill enemies, maybe modify the inventory system... So many ways RE6 could be improved imo. RE5 isn't a masterpiece but I don't know what Capcom would do to remake that one other than fix Sheva's god-awful AI. Or add a mode that removes Sheva from the game entirely and rebalances puzzles for one player. So you can play without Sheva if you want/arent in a co-op game. Every horror game (kinda) needs a remake. And I'll give you one simple reason: graphics. I'm not a "graphics snob" in every genre, hell... I'm playing Baldur's Gate 1 right now. But when it comes to horror, current technology of a generation will almost always (except when it's just one generation behind like the TLOU remake) be a ridiculous improvement. RE4, just like Dead Space got a BILLION times scarier (or more "atmospheric/immersive", if you will) with their remakes. Compared to this remake, the woods in the original are a joke with the lack of detail, shadows and lighting (also the sepia tone). Does it DESPERATELY needs a remake? No, nothing does, the industry could be making something new instead, but it's hard when the feedback from the consumer is "oh well we liked games better in the 2000s-2010s", their answer is "then let's remake the games people loved!", then people throw money at the screen doubling down on what "we" want.

You literally put into words how I feel. I played Resident Evil 4 for the First time about a Month ago and it became my favorite game of all time. I’ve played the Demo like 6 times already and my conclusion is it’s not bad but nowhere near as good as the original. A lot of things feel like RE4 but the Gameplay just doesn’t hit the same. Leon feels so Heavy and Stumbly now instead of the Precision of the original. The gunplay/combat encounters just don’t have that Flow that made the original so fun, It feels like every other 3rd person shooter. Something I loved about the Original was how GAMEPLAY Oriented it was, modern games love taking away control from the player and having cinematic cutscenes for everything. For example, Leon going into the Opening house, In the original you could just GO into the house but now there’s a Small cutscene of Leon looking around. Or when you use the binoculars, in the original you could look around wherever you wanted however you wanted, but now the game directs you to where it wants you to look, it’s almost as if it thinks the Player is too dumb to look at the Burning Body so it has to hold their hand. Anyways, I think the remake is going to be good and I can’t wait to play it when I get the chance but it’s definitely not gonna knock the Original off it’s place.

I'll summerize everything you said into one sentence: Resident Evil 4 is a quintessential Mikami game, Rem4ke is a Capcom game with shades of Sony AAA design. I don't think that's inherently bad, to be honest Resident Evil hasn't disappointed since RE7 (as a matter of a fact, I see Resident Evil for Capcom as to what AssCreed later became to Ubi). Resident Evil remakes haven't missed, REmake, Resi2 Remake and Resi3 Remake included. It might not be the quintessential zeitgeist that Resident Evil 4 was originally, but it might still be a really good _game_ nonetheless. Seems to be a common feedback for _any_ game in the series (_It's a great *game*, it's just not a great *Resi* game_, as if resident evil has one defined identity). Overall, your convo over here reflects what I've been talking with boghog these past few days and I see you points. I like how you both compared Resi 4 to God Hand (yay, Shinji Mikami masterclass). I still trust Capcom (have done so since like 7-8 years ago when they ditched the westernization of stuff and leaned to their strengths), will have to judge it on its merits, I will still have my million copies of Resident Evil 4. At the end of the day, Resident Evil has had 3 distinct lines of games and a weir spin off line which might be my favorite. You have the REmake line which is classic resi, you have the Resi 4 line (Resi 4,5, Revelations 1,2 and so on), you have the more TPS line (Remakes and the weird spinoffs) and yet there are the spinoffs that I loved and no one ever played (Outbreak, Umbrella Chronicles, Gun Survivor, etc). BTW, I can see you're making an effort in improving presentation, improving editing and so on. It does not go unnoticed my friend, take care and keep up the good work. Even when we might differ in opinions at times (we mostly agree tbh), I respect what you do over here.

Before I clicked I said to myself this is going to be a turbo fan with a very specific playstyle that is going to boil down to “it’s different, therefor it’s bad”, sadly I was correct (didn’t expect the typewriter though). You want to wedge yourself into a corner and stack up the hoard infront of you, using gigantic kick and knife hit boxes and long knock down times to control the crowd because that’s what the original game mechanics encourages you to do, and rather than taking the new mechanics on their own terms you are upset that the old tricks don’t work like they used to. Playing the original game I fell into the same pattern but considered this play style a failure on my part because it felt like a reliable method of trivialising content that was easy to fall into as a routine, players being able to optimize the fun out of their own experience is usually considered a failure of game design. A good game makes "optimal" and "fun" have as much overlap as possible. This feels like the discussions between DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal where 2016 players want that comfortable rut of running and demolish with the super shotty, while DOOM Eternal players like being pushed out of their comfort zone with more mechanics, more decisions, and empowered enemies. Just watching your demo footage was upsetting, you ate so much avoidable damage and are still in that mind set of “cornering myself = good”. Weaving the crowd isn’t hard if you just don’t corner yourself and pack the enemies so tight they overlap, that is not how to play the new game. A steady cadence of head shot -> kick while keeping your eyes open to react to windups is more than enough for a hoard of ganados. You want to be agressive while keeping an eye on a way out when the hoard breaks from being a blob and starts to resemble an arc you want to be out of there before it encloses into a circle around you. Practice makes perfect, you have clearly “perfected” your own RE4 style but wuold rather RE4 Reamke fit the same mold rather than re-adjust. you even seem to be doing things that would even be bad in the original game like running past a non stunned enemy to pull off a kick which animation locks you while that enemy throws an attack that is 100% a skill issue. you see the changes as mindless trend chasing because they deviate from the original, but I see the opposite these are direct / pointed responses to abuses the original game allowed in an attempt to make the game more dynamic and more consistently challenging / tense. Also if both game mechanics and graphical presentation are sacred what exactly CAN be changed in a remake? You already got an HD remaster and the texture mod if the original game mechanics and graphical presentation is what you crave your desires are already fulfilled so what utility could a remake possibly serve if not to offer new mechanics and graphics?

I like that this is such a high-level analysis of things. You go through the process of designing the game at the beginning, or what must have been very close to it. What decision leads to what decision, etc. And the result is, they iteratively balanced the game such that the end result works around the new control scheme. It's a valid "solution" to the game design problem as such. But the question is why do we have this problem to begin with? Even if a game is balanced, mechanically thought through, and "correct" from a game design standpoint (as you said, it's not "broken"), the fact still remains that game design has inherent space for creativity, and a "correct"ly designed game based on the same assumptions as every other "correct"ly designed game, will rarely be interesting. Creativity, especially in game design, is in some sense a problem solving exercise, but it is not always about the final answer. The questions you ask matter, too.

@TheElectricUnderground yeah it's an odd homogenization of the series. Very true that it's a modern gaming idea too. One that not only has taken away what made these sequels distinct, but also akin to burying the footprints of its time. @@LfunkeyA RE4 is ridiculously popular. The few RE fans that wanted it changed wanted it play just like the previous several games. Which is understandable, obviously; not EVERYONE was "tired of the formula," I don't know why people get tired of things they ostensibly like so quickly. RE4 is my favourite game of all time and I really enjoyed the remake demo and I'm very excited to play the full game. I'm happy to see things are different, that's the whole point of a remake VS remaster, it's supposed to be the same yet different, recognisable yet unfamiliar, I'm looking forward to saying "oooh yeah this part! But wait... This looks different, that didn't happen in the OG!" It's exciting! Why would you want it to stay the same? Especially since the OG is already on every platform.

Jellyfish in time i think we will look back on this era of remakes and this idea that changing the entire game in the remake will be laughed at, and here is why: in principal, this idea makes no sense at all, artistically. The reason why ff7 remake and resi4 remake can exist as basically new games cosplaying as the originals is because these projects are propped up by the legacy of the original games. In contrast, there are other remakes out there like Wild Guns Reloaded, which do exactly what I describe and build off the original gameplay, rather than jamming in some kind of new game into the the old's skin. So for wild guns reloaded, imagine if they turned that game into a strategy rpg, nobody would buy it because the audience buy in isn't there and the legacy audience doesn't want a strategy rpg. This formula of put a new game in the old's skin only works with massive beloved releases, and we have this bubble right now where players are bought in enough to accept this. So remaking resi4 into this generic mgs5 inspired action game is just a compromise that Capcom are currently able to get away with purely because how successful the original release is.

I haven't seen the whole vid at the time of writing this, I'll get there, I just woke up, but you're not alone. Being a huge fan since 06, I went into this hoping for the best. And immediately got slapped in the face with it's control systems. In a vid I'm editing, I said "This is not a remake, it's a reimagining." A remake kinda implies it's going to keep mostly everything the same but with a new coat of paint. Immediately, they've made changes to literally everything. The story is literally different due to how Leon sees everything now, Leon isn't as cocky, map is different, gunplay is different, character designs changed drastically, even the title design is completely different. But that's the key word, "different." I don't think this game will be bad by any means. If the demo has anything to go by, this game is going to be a smash hit and will strike a chord in everyone's hearts, but I genuinely don't think I'll be seeing myself playing this game for over a decade and a half anytime soon. The original RE4 just has so much depth and skill expression and the remake doesn't.

right exactly Crimson. What's funny is that if they want to do all this different stuff from the gameplay to the story, why not just make a new game? it's really sad how we live in this remake culture so deeply that all a game needs to do is essentially take the premise and name of an existing popular game and somehow insert itself into that game's legacy, forever. This game should be called: Resident Evil 4 - Fanfiction

@@TheElectricUnderground Pretty much. If this game was just a new RE game, I don't think I'd have any issues. Heck, if they change "remake" to "reimagined" or "a new tale," something to imply that the game isn't the same as the OG, I wouldn't have any issues. It's the fact they're trying to pass it off as the legendary RE4 title without even trying to keep the integrity of the original gameplay. Also, I watched your vid all the way through and I pretty much agree to everything. Especially the knife. I get why it has durability, but it really shouldn't. What they need to do is make the parry mechanic harder with a higher reward, rather than just holding the button down. They've already nerfed it's damage, range and stun capabilities, it doesn't need durability. And the parry mechanic, even if there is a weak and perfect parry, it's both too easy and not rewarding enough to even go for.

@@CrimsoniteSP I feel the same way I'm a big fan of 4 and of the series in general 4 is my fav I've played it countless times I played the demo didn't think much of it as bad but played it more and more saw all the story changes and how Leon isn't this cocky, quirky goofball that he is in 4 outside of the bingo line in the demo which is honestly misleading the audience based on the scenes from some of the trailers I've seen it's like they put that in their to hype old fans up like he said the thing see we care. When in actuality they don't care Ashley's character is problematic now so we have to change how Leon and her interact some scenes that I've seen seem to just suck the Joy out of the games campyness like the cabin scene with Luis Ashley and leon run in and Luis throws Leon a thing to bar the door they we get campy goodness dialogue with Luis talking about ballistics the scene isn't serious. Now in the remake they run in and Luis shuts and bars the door Leon looks at Luis angrily say's you and storms towards him slamming him against the wall the entire scene is now completely different removing all of It's charm it's like they Just want everything to be serious maybe with a hint of what it use to be here and there. Then you got the line No thanks Bro being completely removed and changed to fat chance the girls fine with me. Makes me wonder what other dialogue they''ve changed and removed is Leon asking Hunnigan out going to be removed at that point you're stripping away things that made me love the original so why would I bother giving you money for a remake of a game I love if it retained it's charm it'd be one thing but as of now they've shown me they don't care about fan's like me and that's just the story problems never mind the voices not being as good gameplay not being as balanced I'd rather buy the Hd version on pc and play with mods for the first time since I'm new to PC gaming which is on sale for like 5 dollars now on top of some other solid cheaper experiences then give capcom 60 dollars for this soulless attempt at a remake. I had a conversation on another video about the knife breaking and they're like if it didn't break it would trivialize the parry mechanic. Well like he said in the video 1 why do we even need a parry the original didn't need it why is it needed here 2 like he also said in the video and what I said to this person then make the parry harder to pull off don't make it so easy to pull off so it takes more skill to use atm it's very easy to pull off it's damn near impossible to miss a parry unless you don't have a knife since it broken which that in of it self breaks the mechanic no knife can't parry sorry. Why would you make a parry that can only be used sometimes that's Just stupid. There is Just so much wrong with this narratively and mechanically I've decided not to get it and I had it pre order for a while now probably since it was announced I hate that I feel this way I love 4 but as it stands I'll Just buy it on pc and have fun with mods then give capcom my money for this.

This is one of the most unnecessary, even pointless remakes ever. Hell, even if it turns out great it would still be redundant in and of itself. If ever a game had absolutely no need of a second go it would be RE4. That game achieved everything it set out to and then some. And hell, then they even went and added more (janky) stuff in the rereleases! What is the point of this? Even the visuals of the original are still in an acceptable place! They could have made just about any other game, even a different remake (like Code: Veronica, say? A game that might actually benefit from a remake?) and it would have been a more purposeful choice. But no - name recognition and brand exploitation matter more. Gimme that 6-7 percent higher profit margin, baby! Just make new games. Seriously. Base them off ideas from the old ones if you have to, but good lord, just make new ones. This insulting remake loop is painful.

Honestly, I legit beat og 4 so many times I got it down to a science. I mean it's second nature for me. In fact, I have og down so hardcore that I can't play it anymore. It's lost its luster. And the reason for that is because it was so God their that I couldn't put it down till I killed it for myself (like Skyrim lol) With that being said, the demo caught me off guard like crazy and I loved it. For me, it actually felt like discovering re4 for the first time again. I understand ur points and I wouldn't say they're invalid. But as a veteran player of the og, 4make reignited my excitement to delve into a masterpiece. I'd argue the generic shooter idea could also be flipped. Og 4 is the source of what eventually created the generic shooter in the first place. Everything emulated 4s third person gameplay back then because it was just that good. Now, remake is emulating modernized 3rd person because that in turn is now that good. Remake requires u to pay attention, react quickly and plan out ur paths. Og did the same on its release. U couldn't play it like its predecessors. U had to adjust ur play style and most players mastered it (like u) And I'll master 4make too. The new mechanics for the most part achieve what I think they set out too, putting u in tight situations. U can't rely on what u knew in og. Ik I found that out really fucking fast lol. Also, the knife is essentially a reloadable weapon now. Just like the guns. If u run out of ammo, that's on u. Just like it was in 1,2,3, and cv before 4. Resource management has always been a core factor for the series (the og anyway). I think what's happening is, because so many veteran players mastered og4, there's a disconnect because there's an assumed familiarity going in. But that's not what remakes or reimaginings are for. Did u not struggle even a little with og4 on ur first run through? It's the same thing with 4make. A new gameplay style to master. Of course it feels like a mix mash of ideas and concepts. It's a 15 minute demo. It doesn't matter how much time u spend on it, ur constantly locked down to eat the game gives u in that section. There's no variables or comparisons to end game or ngp. For Leon's movement, I kinda understand. Put again, it's just a new system to master. But I also played rdr2 in 3rd person the entire game so I guess I just have a really high tolerance for sluggish movement but that's completely subjective so. Also. Leon is fuck ugly in 4make. 100% agree. He doesn't look right. And somehow, they managed to make his haircut look like a Karen cut. Irks tf outta me. With the dead dog, I assume it's a fake out. They've been very adamant that they only added to the game and didn't cut anything so I don't imagine they'd gamble on that since most players very fondly remember setting the dog free. One point I do agree with though, is the shotgun. I can definitely see that it doesn't feel quite as impactful. But at the same time, it was about the same in 2 and 3makes so it doesn't bother me much. But I do see ur point. As far as the, why not make a new game instead argument, I understand ur point. I somewhat agree even. But like I said before, as someone that's played og into a shallow grave, remakes give me back excitement and enjoyment. Not to mention, re9s still a thing that's being worked on anyway so it's not as if 4make disbarred future projects. But again, the make a new game instead thing is subjective. I agree and disagree there. As far as being a downgrade, I completely disagree. For me, 4make plays fresh enough that I wanna keep going but with a difficulty curve that makes me wanna master it like I did og. The enemies bum rushing and crowding and flanking elevates the situations in a way I wasn't prepared for at all. Whereas in og, the enemy behavior stays more or less the same throughout (common enemies) until the island. While entertaining, it becomes very predictable and familiar. There's not much guess work. The remake enemies are considerably more unpredictable so far. There's more incentive to keep moving instead of corner camping. I'll admit there is a bit of sponginess. And the first enemy is op AF lol but u can also easily evade him and not waste a single shot or bullet so that complaints kinda void imo. And once the village fight starts, most enemies drop about as fast as the og. I'd also point out that og had its fair share of sponges too. On pro especially. Commons took almost full clips of u didn't know wat u were doing. So in conclusion, I understand ur points and I think they're presented well. I just disagree with most.

Hey. Just some tips for people who want to enjoy the game more: 1. Perfectly timed (not spammed) knife parries do not just sever the arms of weaponless Ganados -- they will always leave Ganados open to a roundhouse kick indicated by a sound cue that differs slightly from the regular parry (listen carefully). Try experimenting with the Ganado just before the village gate. 2. If you feel the camera or aiming is 'sluggish', maximize all 'Camera Acceleration" options in settings to disable them. 3. Maximize 'Field of View' in the settings for better environmental awareness. 4. Armed Ganados (such as those holding axes) can be disarmed by repeatedly shooting their hands. 5. Crouching essentially serves as a 'dodge' mechanic when weaponless Ganados lunge at you. You can also stagger lunging Ganados with a perfectly timed knife jab to the head (not slash). 6. Maximize camera speed in the settings. This way, you don't have to use the 'instant spin' command. Adjust aiming camera speed in settings until you're comfortable. 7. If you shoot the legs of armed Ganados (such as those holding pitchforks) who charge, you can occasionally cause them to fall to the ground. 8. If you're struggling with the combat, you can use the village as a 'training ground' repeatedly if you allow your death before the bell tolls. Diligently practice your aiming; never stop moving -- as a general rule, change location for every two to three Ganados killed; never linger in areas which are too 'open'; unless you're doing a 'knife-only' run, only use the knife for parries or when you've run out of ammunition; exploit the roundhouse kick as much as possible; always disarm or kill armed Ganados in groups first. On the other hand, if you're worried the game will be too easy: 'Hardcore' and 'Professional' Mode have been confirmed in achievements. 9. If you find the image too 'blurry', turn off 'Lens Distortion', 'Depth of Field', and 'Motion Blur' in the settings. 10. Ganados can set bear traps. Be careful. 11. Instead of landing a single headshot on an armed Ganado and then performing a roundhouse kick, try landing two -- if you do so, you can know for certain that the roundhouse kick will finish them off. Hope these help. Take care. :)

Personally dreading the Silent Hill 2 Remake more. As mixed as the discourse is around Resident Evil and its remakes pegging the differences between the two is at least a simple matter of comparing very observable qualities in the game's design, graphics, what was added/removed, etc. Silent Hill 2 is more arthouse-ey, lauded more for it's story and atmosphere which is way easier to mess up imo. It's a fickle thing atmosphere and tone can be, especially for games. Something as little as the lighting, delivery of voicelines, or the facial animations being off can tank the main appeal of that title and don't even get me started on the possibility of the devs adding too many modern gaming trends and turning James into some action hero. I guess only time can tell if they drop the ball or not.

I don't care for that stuff, what I do care is that it plays worse than the original and the introduction to your first enemy is far worse than in the original (It also spoils the nature of the enemies you are fighting, so when they all leave at the end of the village section, that sense of mystery of what just happened and why is spoiled).

The shot limb - knife was something gamers found out to conserve ammo, instead of designers pushing that tactic as default or optimal. That is an interesting idea but I don't think so because of how tightly balanced the design of resi4 is. If the beat em up elements of the game were unintended, then they would be far more degen, and you can find this type of thing in action games. In resi 4 though, it all fits together far too well for it to be an accident. You can tell they spent so much time balancing and tuning the gameplay, down to the zombie walk speeds and the way their attacks track. It's just not possible for it to be accidental design.
