I used to work at Capcom. The knife used to be way more useless and annoying than it is now until we suggested a dedicated quickdraw button for the knife. Until then you had to go into the inventory and select the knife every time you came across a barrel or box, and knockdown followed by melee was out of the question. And I think you're missing the forest for the trees with your principal criticism. Everything up to Resident Evil 3 was clunky and featured controls that haven't aged well, and every game in the genre had its own take on how 3D shooting should be done. Resident evil 4, on the other hand, is less a relic than the game that established the formula for all 3D shooters control schemes going forward to this day. In the grand scheme of things, it's the game that modernized 3D action.

That opening village mob was something entirely new back in 2004. It was intense. More enemies then bullets. You're running your gunning and all of a sudden it's over as quickly as it starts. The game has this progression where it goes from horror to action horror to action game. And it's amazing how playing it. The village, the mine, the castle, the military Base all feel so natural.

Believe it or not, I actually think the controls and Leon's limited movement are the reason why this game is still getting played to this day. While the gameplay may feel clunky, it is in fact carefully considered to be just so. The designers could have given it traditional shooter controls, but the overall design would have suffered. There's definitely a learning curve to it all, but it may help to think of it in a different way. When Leon aims, he has to ground himself--this is key to everything in RE4's combat loop. An early game enemy like Dr. Salvador plays well off of this grounding, each continued shot is a commitment to remaining in that spot, and he can instantly kill you with his chainsaw. He is actually an extremely simple enemy trying to a very linear thing, but manages to have a big combat presence due to his sheer lethality, so it keeps you in check immediately. But it's not about the 1v1 dance, it's the other enemies swarming you, as getting clonked in the head with an axe as Salvador closes in will likely kill you. The game's flow is all about positioning and crowd management. He is one tool of many the game throws your way, and all function around the basic function of being grounded to attack. Running toward a stunned enemy for a kick is a risk when other enemies are running closer, but the payoff? Huge. Tons of I-frames, a knockdown and knockback on everyone around him. Those reasons are also why fans of the game often don't feel the game needs a remake. The first thing they're likely gonna do is remove that grounding and let Leon move while aiming. What happens then? The chainsaw lunge no longer works as slightly moving back while you pop shots into him removes both his attack and the commitment. Risk is gone. Right from the get-go his enemy needs to be totally reworked, yet an enemy that can one hit kill you can EASILY become something incredibly annoying, especially when it's encountered within the first 5 minutes of the game. An enemy like Garrador, the blind claw enemy, charges in a straight line at you once it tracks the sound source to you. If you have modern controls, you slightly move to the left or right and invalidate the entire enemy. Everything is a domino effect, with a ton of enemies that now need to act totally differently, over a long campaign that far exceeds the scale of their previous remakes, just for a game that is almost certainly going to just be a lesser game. It's VERY hard to essentially redefine the combat in a game this long and varied and still hit the same highs of encounter design that worked so well in this framework.
@MertKayKay
@MertKayKay 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that the game is built around these mechanics in a way that's effective - like your examples of the chainsaw guy and the garradors, the combat is constructed around you in a way that plays off it well. I don't actually mind the combat in the game for this reason, but the controls are just very clunky even if the game wraps around them so well. The careful addition of i-frames also became a really effective consideration when approaching large crowds, so I'll give you that too. My only counterpoints would be: why does Leon need to ground himself when stabbing? And why does he only do a horizontal swipe? And, even with grounding taken into consideration, do you still think over the shoulder aiming mechanics are good? I understand that the Silent Hill franchise had clunky 'everymen' protagonists because they were supposed to be finding the combat just as difficult as you, but the aiming and knife mechanics in Resident Evil 4 seemed to be needlessly frustrating to use.

This is so utterly accurate. I've heard all kinds of rumours about how they're going to make it more of a survival horror and less of an action game when they remake it, and how they're going to use some of the RE3.5 ideas that they rejected originally. All I can say is, that's probably for the best. If they try to make this RE4 into something that ticks all the 2020s boxes, they're just going to end up with a comparatively mediocre game. Honestly I wish they'd stop remaking games but keep refining the RE2 2019 style in brand new RE games. It has a lot of potential and these old RE games are already good as they are. The idea that every good game needs to be 'updated' any time trends change is ludicrous.

strongly disagree with the nostalgia point, i played the game for the first time ever very recently (finished it yesterday) and i think it aged extremely well. sure theres some clunk but once you get used to the controls they feel really natural (apart from the knife which i do agree is pretty shit). the camera felt awful at first but again its just something to get used to, once youre more accustomed to it its really not that bad. and as far as things like the jumping prompts go i dont think its as much of an issue as you made it sound, but maybe thats because my instinct was to rub my face against every obstacle i ran into so i never struggled with figuring it out. i think how well you can adjust to the feel of the game will completely determine whether or not youre able to enjoy it. its SO different from modern games and their control that i imagine most peoples brains will struggle to adjust to everything. i found that analyzing what playstyle the game expected from me and doing my best to try to emulate it helped immensely in having way more fun with the initially strange and stiff controls to a point where they really grew on me. not saying your opinions are invalid, i totally get why youd feel the way you do. just thought id add my 2 cents haha.

Glad you mentioned the Garradors and Regenerators. Scared the shit out of me when I first played it. I love this game so much but cannot replay it, the controls and QTE's drive me insane. Before this Resident Evil CV and Silent Hill 3 were pretty much it and God of War released at the same time and the controls of GoW and RE4 were revolutionary in the eyes of everyone I talked to. Crazy to think back on that. Might not remember since it has been a while but, I had two questions. Since I didn't see you mention it or show it in the clips: Did you know you could Quick Turn 180 degrees? Or you could just throw Ashley in a dumpster for most of the game?

This game was Pretty much the template / inspiration for all third person over the shoulder action games / shooters that came after it. No one was doing third person control, environmental interactivity and inventory management, inside outside very well before then, although some had tried and had relative success with one component or the other. Re4 brought all these together In a really refine package that was ground breaking at the time, But a lot gets refined and renewed over the space of 16 years :) that was a time when game characters feet were still cutting into the ground when walking up, hands would never grab objects and ladders like they were solid objects. But RE4 was meticulous in making its world solid and making combat and moving around environments interesting.

As a person who wasn't grown up with that game, when I went to play through all the resident evil titles, I quickly found that I shoved 4 all the way to the bottom. I have never had a worse experience playing a game before. I would rather play Re6 if I'm dead honest, at least it has some sort of scary section with Leon's playthrough. The reason I hate re4 is because unlike 1-3, Re4 REWARDS you for mindlessly mowing through zombies. You're taught to face them instead of fear them. In the other titles, you had to think about whether you should take on the enemy or not, and your lack of bullets could be nerve-wracking. Also, the fact it had maps you constantly went through made it so you always had to be aware of which routes you cleared and which were dangerous territory. It had the same vibes that The Walking Dead has, now that I think about it. Whereas re4, you just mow through enemies without a care cause you're just gonna pickup the ammo anyway. Edit: 18:46 also WHATTTT???? I feel like we had an exact opposite experience, I loved alien isolation for the stealth and how the Alien was actually a threat and how I had to think about what I needed to do to move around them. And I was bored to death with just shooting constantly in re4. It might just be a matter of taste ig.

Part of games evolution and just game design in general, we have a lot of various control schemes and once we taste a really good movement system then others that don't live up to that new standard we've formed in our heads... we find something lacking. The really well realized movement systems in games these days spoil us , and we get a little unfair to older game movement from it. Playing Devil May Cry 5 and then Devil May Cry 1 back to back gives me that feel. Least of all the controls in the officially PC DMC1 being literally GBA emulator controls that thankfully i'm used to. I played Re4 on the original PC Release, with WSAD for movement and camera, Right Shift to aim knife, Left shift to aim gun, left and right Ctrl and space also were there. So welcome to the hardcore control scheme lol. I brute forced my way into 100% completion and never once did I hate the controls except for quicktime events . Krauser v Leon knife fight was horrible. The lack of warning and the requirement to retry them on a first playthrough isn't fun, but beyond that I have few complaints about the game . The remastered pc release felt so jank and looked so bad with the textures though not sure whether that's just a preference bias.

So in the remake of 2 he can walk and aim and it’s set before 4. I know it’s because of game control differences but I like to think that Leon somehow lost the ability to walk and aim at the same time between the events of 2 and 4. Also, I only played re4 like two years ago so I was late to play it too. I seem to be very late to nearly every fandom I’m in. ._. I played it very recently and I like the gameplay. As someone who loves the older RE's (including Zero and Code Veronica), I always felt RE4 was super dumbed down by comparison. The older games had a metroidvania-esque (or Souls-y) style of exploration, with lots of self discovery, simple but fun puzzles, and slow paced tension. RE4 feels like a lot of narrow pathways with tons of pewpew, then you occasionally get locked in a building and go full hoarde mode for way too long. Normally I can see the appeal of a game even if I don't like the game itself. RE4? No. I just can't, and I can't cop out with the "to each their own" line either, cause when a game sells, they repeat the formula. Every positive review of RE4 helped contribute to the abominations that followed.

Watched my partner play this game a while ago, when we were still in lock down, and while I enjoyed laughing at its utter campiness, and translating bits and pieces of the Spanish dialogue, the controls were really difficult, especially during boss fights. Figuring out where to go next/how specific mechanics worked was often frustrating as well. So it was nice to see you validate some of our issues with the game. That being said, I still kinda love it? It’s like a camp classic to me in how cheesy and weird it is (admittedly, there are a LOT of issues with representation and they definitely didn’t handle the Spanish villagers well AT ALL), and I still look back on that time we spent playing it fondly. (Well, I say ‘we,’ I attempted to figure out the controls a few times and nearly threw the controller across the room so it was decided that I would no longer attempt to play anymore 😂) I do find it funny that you “shipped” Leon and Ashley, as I always saw her as more of a teenager, while Leon read more as late 20s, early 30s to me? But this has no basis in any kind of fact, (I literally have no clue what their canon ages are, nor am I saying that other can’t/shouldn’t ship them), just in how their interactions from early on in the game read to me. In fact, my partner and I quickly latched onto Luis as a potential love interest for Leon, (it probably wouldn’t ever have been attempted or “canon” back when this game first came out, but whatever, us gays can dream lol 😂), when he was first introduced via literally falling into each other, and entertained ourselves with creating cheesy romantic scenarios and adding in sappy (or innuendo-filled) dialogue with our own horrid impressions of Luis and Leon’s voice actors. We were very sad when, ahem, things later in the game made it clear that romance between the two would no longer be possible, not canonically anyway, (I’m being purposefully vague just in case someone comes across this and they’re worried about spoilers). But yeah, anyway, this game is fun, and frustrating, and scary, and I appreciate you giving your two cents on it.

To get a real feel for how the controls were revolutionary for their time you'd just need to go back and try playing the original Resident Evil 1, 2 or 3. After that the clunky restrictive controls feel like a massive breath of fresh air. Amusingly I think this was the game that really made the third person shooter genre shoot up in popularity. But I understand entirely how clunky it can feel playing new games in that style then coming back and playing Resident Evil 4. I saw one other video of yours and I really liked it. This was enjoyable as well but it's frustrating to hear this game talked about in this way by someone who can tell that it's all more or less functioning as intended and that it's the person lacking a 2005 perspective that makes it not work, and then hear them continue to talk about it that way. This game controls tighter than a _lot_ of modern games, but you obviously need to be comfortable with the controls for it to feel that way. I think this game more than any other highlights just how much damage the bloated budgets and 'games by numbers' approach have done to games as an art form. In 2005, this game was _chosen_ to be designed in this way because it was a Resident Evil game, and this was deemed a good way to make it comfortable both for old RE fans who were used to tank controls, and hopefully new players who had never played with the fixed cameras of the old games. This approach worked really well, and for years the game was praised for 'modernising' by removing tank controls. As you can see, this is not accurate. But nobody really cared back then about the tank controls so much as the fixed cameras, which the game did ditch (except for the Japanese version's Ashley-only section, which does have them and I love it). And now, fast-forward to 2022, and young players on Steam are complaining that the game doesn't have a _warning label_ about its lack of dual-stick controls. My point is companies are conditioning people to depend on every game playing the same, with the same controls, at least within the same genre, and I find this damaging to the art form. When it takes me a little while to acclimate to a control scheme I can tell was designed specifically for the game I'm playing, but it works really well, I am glad that I can tell the game's design was carefully considered at every level, along with how each aspect of itself interacts with the rest of its components. Truly unique, wonderful games can come out of this. I'd argue this is one of them. Just as I'd argue that the homogenisation of controls and game feels has just about killed any chance of the old '90s RE style ever returning even as middle-shelf spin-offs, which I find really sad considering those are my favourite games. About the characters, the game is written like that on purpose. The game is a horror comedy, no doubt about it. It's intentionally cheesy and campy. I also thought everyone found this Leon unbelievably charming. I know I can't get enough of those one-liners. 'Your right hand comes off?' 'Saddler -- _you're_ small-time!' 'Where's everybody going, bingo?' I can understand why you felt that way about Ada but I think she fits right in with that over-the-top approach to the characters. I will say that it has a hint of that annoying approach to 'strong female characters' where they just write them as caustic, cold, and/or insulting, but I think the game does a decent job of accounting for that with her own missions, and given the cheesy action film approach they were using, I think it's fine. But after this game, they start writing her _really_ bad. If you'd played the original RE2, I think a lot of the weirdness between her and Leon in this game makes more sense. I have trouble outright recommending it to you because not only does it use tank controls but fixed cameras. Still superior to the remake in every way if you ask me, and objectively so for understanding the dynamic between RE4 Leon and Ada. The remake wrote her awfully in my opinion (it's a great game overall, but not for its story). Leon is interesting in the 1998 RE2 as well as he has a saviour complex and the game knows it, so he's unlikeable for being patronising, but admirable for being genuinely brave and wanting to help people. I think it's handled well for a game that's much more low-budget in its localisation. And finally, in this game, Ashley's age is closer to 20 and Leon's is closer to 30, so I was personally relieved he turned her down.

This reminded me of my brother when he first played the game, he got weirded out by the camera and stop playing before getting to the village. I'm mostly fine with tank controls but I wouldn't go out of my way to use them if given an option between modern controls and older ones, so I understand people disliking them. I honestly thought the game aged fine for the most part but seeing this video got me thinking that might not be the case 😅 specially after seeing you miss the jump prompt at the village.

I played this game as a kid and it made me absolutely shit myself, so I couldn’t get very far (a recurring theme with a lot of games I played as a kid, happened with Ocarina of Time too). Came back to it as a big strong adult with hundreds of hours of Resident Evil 5 under my belt and flexed my now far superior over the shoulder shooter skills on the game. Learning to aim with the left stick was definitely weird, but it was bearable after some practice. All in all, controls are ass, but the gameplay is good enough to make it worth it. A lovably ass game.

I tried to play it a few years ago when I fell in love with resident evil 7. I remember ppl saying re4 is the best one in the series. And ehhhh I didn’t love it tbh. I’m not sure if it was the gameplay’s fault or I just couldn’t get into the story. Maybe you’re right and it just didn’t age that well. Also, I kinda hated the brownish colour palette lol, not sure why. Still, I can appreciate how revolutionary it was for its time. And I am excited for the remake! The irony being that all long time RE fans know that when 4 came out we were all excited because Fours controls were actually an improvement All things considered. So essentially Capcom beat and abused us for years and then patted us on the head once and we got super happy about it. I don't know how this comment ended up putting us as a battered partner and capcoms are abusive boyfriend but that's where we are now.

The jump prompt thing was just standard for that time period and even going forward. QTEs in a game sort of imply that you use them for most things. I guess having played a lot of PS2 games I was just used to it. Current games still use the interact prompt but usually it now has witcher senses or a glow to show you where it is and it’s more often for doors or objects.

@@MertKayKay I suppose all the other previous big horror games of the time, including resident evil, silent hill, and haunting ground had fixed camera angles that sort of directed you to the right place. RE4 was unique in that it introduced a new camera angle and more free shooting. I found going back to the old Resident Evils a lot harder to play with the fixed camera angles and trying to shoot based on essentially a general direction. I’ll admit, we’ve gotten so used to the great modern controls of PS4 (inclduing the freedom to jump or climb everything) that going back is a lot harder. I played The Evil Within recently and the controls and mechanics of that were so clearly dated and were hard to get used to, it felt very PS3. I’ll have to see how it compares to the second one.

yeah the control part is really weird, somehow in a strange way i found tank controls way more fun to use. i guess its because with the very old games you know theyre old and do look old. btu with re4 they dont look too terrible old so when you go to play it youre kinda blindsided by just how old this game actually is and how far controls have come since then.

@@MertKayKay Well, it was nice to play with a group of well armed and trained soldiers (not to mention cool looking), who are also MEANT to be there, instead of our boyscout "wtf am I doing here?" protagonists, and the shooting can be fun 50% of the time. Also, being bitten actually had consequences, since if you dont treat yourself, you will turn. On the other hand, the graphics were okay at best, with lots of performance issues, wet sock quality story, along with a Himalaja sized mountain of bugs and flawed gameplay. All in all, Im hoping to this day that it will get a remake like 2 3 and 4, cause it had a lot of potential. 5/10, trying to have fun but the game is making it hard XD

Capcom kinda ignores DmC 2 ever existed and the gameplay is way different from the rest of the series, nor does it carries any impact on later games but beware DmC 1 is hard, has a bit of a puzzling desing and can make you pulls some hairs as for the controls are really dated even for me who played it in 2007. Imo DmC 3 is the best start as it also has the styles that really enhances the gameplay, sadly the ability to change styles without using a statue was introduced in 4(also sorry for any mistakes, english isn't my mother language).
