I feel like part of why this game is so effective is because it plays on dread. The first time you see something, it isn't a jumpscare-- it's a hint, a warning. "This is out there, and it's coming for you." Then, it makes you wander around, knowing the thing is out there, bracing yourself for the scare, and by the time the jumpscare actually happens you've built up so much dread and anticipation that it really gets you.

Man, this takes me back. I'm happy you got to experience RE:7 blind, it's so interesting to see how you tackle a game with no way to know where the scares are. I even forgot a few of them and got spooked too. 3:39 When I was a kid, Chucky scared tf outta me. I wouldn't even look at any pictures of it when the series continued and got popular. I like watching scary games because it's somehow thrilling, but scary movies mess me up intrusively that it gives me nightmares. 5:19 so cute, but also the 2 people who brought up Fatal Frame in the chat ur so real 14:43 fun fact, when the game showed it's first teaser demo, the intro in to the house was slightly different showing the fate of the guys in the VCR tape, it gave the illusion that you could actually escape the house lol the DLC actually continues some prelude events before Ethan arrived as well 28:15 yes akunya yes 1:32:50 we open our home! we open our hearts! and what do you do?! lmao I have never seen someone play resident evil 7 like this, but it was a nice change to see tbh. i think vox is generally a fast paced guy and likes to rush through games, whereas in this game, it only made the gameplay harder, because you have to be very careful with the ammo and actively search for materials. 😂😩 but despite you leaving a lot of materials behind, I loved watching every second of this.

@@artemisfowl1862 It's not one thing that RE7 does specifically, more that it's got a lot of little things that annoy me all together in one place. I didn't find it all that scary, honestly - slasher style horror doesn't do much for me at all, so the Bakers never scared me that much, and while I absolutely love the graphics, character and environment design, the ambience of the whole thing didn't do much to get under my skin. Then there's other things that annoy me specifically, like how once you meet Mia and find out she's crazy there's just no reason for Ethan to stick around. It's even clear the phones work, so Ethan should have just called as many cops as possible and got out. There's nothing he can do for Mia by that point, but the game gets pretty contrived about why he can't just GTFO. Then there's more gameplay related things, like how infuriating the inventory system is, and how the pistol in the game is so pathetically weak that a full magazine may as well only hold two shots, for as much good as it'll do you. I'm also annoyed by how Ethan moves so agonisingly slow, even when running which made avoiding monsters and backtracking a chore for me, and how the knife may as well not be in the game at all for as weak as it is. Even the way the monsters just sort of shamble aimlessly around bugs me. It's a really well made game that a lot of people love, but it just doesn't do it for me at all. For what it's worth, my favourite survival horror games are the first two dead space games. I love how the necromorphs will just beeline it for you, and how the weapons in that game are powerful, and have great feedback, but you never feel truly safe, because the necromorphs can come from anywhere, and they're super aggressive. Oddly enough, I even found that RE8 was one of my favourites, too, just by making Ethan's movement quicker, giving better weapon feedback and damage, more inventory space and giving the character a better reason to be there. Again, I totally respect RE7, but it just annoys me in so many little ways that just mount up after a while.
