Here's my thoughts, and it's just me imagining things, but maybe miranda couldn't do anything to duke because maybe he's immortal and can't be killed or he can protect himself against her. But maybe the vice versa is also true, duke had no means to fight her even if he didn't like her in the 1st place. That maybe why duke is aiding ethan (or anyone willing to fight miranda).

Note that when Ethan wakes up in Duke’s cart, there’s a house crest with an owl on the floor, one that doesn’t belong to the other four lords. That, Duke’s near omniciouqness, his presence undisturbed by the lords, and a ledger in Lady Dimitrescu’s room noting business with Duke, leaves no doubt in my mind that Duke is a fifth lord. Why he’s not named as such I don’t know, or why he supports Ethan, but I can make a guess. He was probably a lord, kicked out of Miranda’s group for an unknown reason, then he supports Ethan to indirectly get revenge on the lords and Mother Miranda. While it could be an entirely different reason, I still believe he’s a lord, or at the very least a descendant of one.

probably cause he's so chubby flubby, miranda thought him useless, but then he figured out his powers and just kept quiet about them - the big lad probably even has some connection to the mold itself, maybe he melts into a puddle when ethans not there and then slitheres his way ahead and rebuilds himself, we dont know if the mold can do that but then again, we didnt think much of ethan getting stabbed an shot and blown up and just sprinkling a little juice on his hands to get all better either, or, maybe his real bodies not actually there and we just see a hallucination, kinda like the customer leaving the money on the counter for you to take later

He's either a bioweapon himself, or, basically a hallucination. Ethan has been straight up hallucinating since early on in 7, to justify his powers. The medical goop he uses is most likely more akin to dumping herbal tea on an open wound for example, but it works because he believes it does. So the Duke could have been something of a mental projection too. It's hard to say exactly what he was currently, but in either case, he's likely still out there, and if 9 does feature Rose, we'll likely see him again.

Man, they played this character out so well. A visibly thriving merchant completely unharmed in a town where everything's gone to hell in a handbasket, a somewhat unsettling smile, popping up in places where it seems he shouldn't belong. But through the whole game, he's been the most upfront and honest with Ethan, and I'll admit the final scene where he was carting Ethan to Mother Miranda actually surprised me, but in a super nice way. I mean, I guess they can't really make a merchant character an antagonist (or maybe you can, I don't remember any game I've played recently that did unless you count stealing from Kecleon in Mystery dungeon, lol) but either way, Duke is the unsung hero aiding Ethan through this desolate game.

7:50 this is the strangest thing ever, how did the Duke even traverse to the altar, it is completely sealed off. And when you look back at the cart after leaving it, it looks like a long abandoned cart without him in sight, neither is it pulled by horses. Was Ethan tripping the whole time or Duke is just something... different.

I like to think The Duke is an omnipotent being who sees all, aiding those who need it, whether it's through his wares or advice. That's why no one, not even Lady Dimitrescu intervenes or deals with him. Similar to the relationship between Mancubus Bloodtooth and Eleanor from Borderlands 3.

It would’ve been so easy for Capcom to just clone the Merchants character from that game into Village but they didn’t and created a fresh new character with Duke. I kinda ship him with Ethan ngl.

And Rose, Ethan's daughter, seems to have a connection to Eveline as well, since the final scene show a soldier calling her by Eveline. So I dont think she is really dead.
