Today we are looking at the wild series of action horror films by Paul W. S. Anderson that were based on the hit 90's game series, Resident Evil. Thank you so much for watching.

I think it's worth noting that Sienna Guillory, the actress playing Jill Valentine in these films, studied the way the games animated Valentine for months and did everything she could to emulate that in Apocalypse - apparently she took the film extremely seriously.

Awww man!! I didn't know that, but it makes her lack of presence in the later films so much worse now that I do. Good for her, though. I always respect the hell out of actors who aren't intimidated or won't scoff at looking into the original source material for inspiration whether it be video games, anime, manga, etc. Like Justin Chatwin looked into the Dragon Ball stuff for his roll in the movie which ultimately failed. It's heartbreaking when things don't work out for them but brings a lifetime of respect from those of us who have appreciation for their effort that might've been better served working with different filmmakers/studios.

That's a reason of why I think the rumour about "Milla wasn't supoosed to be the main character in RE film, Michelle Rodriguez was" is a stupid invention. Milla was a more important start even at that moment and Michelle barely started his career. How people can think they would cast Milla in a minor role when she was the most known member of the cast?

Dogs are obviously aware of the world around them, and I imagine that they can think, but probably without words and more with senses. But I wonder what they're feeling in weird situations like that. It's probably closest to going to the vet. "This is weird. Nothing bad is happening, yet...I hope this doesn't hurt". And then they have to pretend to attack people.

My girl and I are big fans of the film series. We adopted a sick feral cat who lived outside the hospital my girl worked at. She was a tough little cat we managed to domesticate. We named her Alice because she was a survivor and an absolute beauty (like Milla) she had a lion-like mane. She passed away a few years ago and this video really reminded me of her ❤ Great work on the retrospective

Not only does the franchise end on a sour note, in terms of narrative and quality, but Behind The Scenes too. . Stunt woman, Olivia Jackson crashed headlong into a camera crane, resulting in skull fractures, and an amputated arm. South African crew member Ricardo Cornelius was crushed to death by a Humvee, 12 zombie actors were hospitalized after a suspended platform fell with all of them on it. . No movie should have this much carnage BTS, especially a film of this quality.

Negligence. Most the films in the franchise were filmed in Toronto, Canada (Apocalypse even depicts the city hall getting blasted by a nuke). So far, the last time Paul WS Anderson did production in Toronto was the film Pompeii, and when that was wrapping he and Milla were spotted prepping for production on The Final Chapter. Instead, production was moved to Cape Town, South Africa, likely due to insurance costs: at least 16 people were injured on set and most had to be hospitalized during the second day of filming Retribution. Knowing this makes it a little less surprising that the next film's production resulted in a crew member's death and the maiming of another. No film is worth a death or disability, and no film maker intends to have such results, but safety for all involved should be priority before the shot.

I don't normally disagree in the form of a comment, but I felt the need to this time. I don't have anything concrete to back up my thoughts, because I don't like these movies either outside of a nostalgic angle. But for whatever reason your suggestions for improving the movies by... making them resemble the games even less really irritated me. From my perspective the problems with these movies arise because they aren't one to one retellings of the game's plot, that's what the fans of the games have been begging Hollywood for since 2002 in the first place. The story diverged too much from its source material, and it's the source material people were interested in in the first place. A well put together and well thought out video, I just have rarely disagreed with a take quite as strongly as I did this one.

"Wesker, you're fired." *door slams on Wesker's leg, crushing it, somehow unable to dodge it, as he's left lying on the floor like a little bitch till the Hive explodes* Probably the biggest disrespect to a one of gamings biggest and most popular bad guy

He didn't. He didn't even do much in the movie. He was set up as the big bad but got pushed aside for some dumb plot twist that the Isaacs in 3 was just a clone, was actually in charge. How did the Red Queen take over if Isaacs was in control? They made Wesker a bitch. I don't remember him even fighting Alice in the movie. He became a background character, pushed aside like a pet. Disrespectful

So I love your videos. the detailed analyses definitely renew my interest in movies as an artistic medium. I do have to mention though that your spoken audio throughout the video sounded blown out. It might be a youtube compression issue, or something with the rendering process, but its not something I've noticed in any of your other videos, or even any other youtube videos at all :/ might be something to take into consideration, and at this point in my life, i do not have the Audio Engineering know how to be able to recommend a solution, i am sorry. but i thought id mention it at least so that you are aware. Besides that, excellent work as always :)

Thanks so much! No that’s definitely an issue on my end that I messed up with. Normally doesn’t happen, but I live far away from where I record audio and I have to leave town for two weeks starting Monday, and by the time I realized it it was too late to redo it all. Shouldn’t be an issue again.

I do think Wesker is adaptable, it just depends of what version of him you are adapting because he really come out as different characters between the first few games and five. Like he was a lot more grounded before 5 make him go full super villain

Around 19 minutes you speculate that the T-Virus is called as such because it was a cool name, and maybe that's true from a production standpoint, but I'm pretty sure it's called that because in the original game, they were using the virus to make a genetic super-human type of monster called Tyrant, the T-Virus is the Tyrant-Virus Also the scene of Alice running down the building comes straight from Resident Evil: Code Veronica, wherein its Claire who runs down a building
@KingBlaziel

You are correct, the virus names correspond to the ultimate creature made, or a feature of the virus. E.g: T - tyrant, G - Golgotha, C - chrysalis, E - Evelyn

No one in any of the games runs down the side of a building. The scene lifted (almost shot for shot) from CV is the helicopter chase into the room where she drops the gun, collapses to the floor, and catches the gun to shoot out a gas tank.

It's always great when someone makes a video essay on a topic I didn't know I wanted to watch. This was thorough without being overly long and uninteresting. I appreciate that you didn't take the easy routes of simply mocking or gushing over the films - your critiques and analysis were fair, logical and balanced. This should help you increase your subscribers and patrons. One note on audio - I listened to the entire video on ear buds. It was audible, but the voiceover recording could be adjusted in order to give your videos a really crisp, professional quality.

I was and still am a big fan of the Resident Evil movies. I remember being hyped a lot for the Final Chapter. I even bought a physical release as soon as I could which was a rare thing for me. I 've never felt so betrayed by any fictional media in my life. They completely scrapped the cool idea of friends and foes coming together to fight the ultimate horde, they killed off screen Alice's adopted daughter for the second time and Wesker got ended by a freaking door. On top of they hired a hyperactive 12 year old to do the editing, I can't understand how others are even able to sit through this hot garbage

I love your videos!!!! I love the attention to detail, editing, and analysis! It's so engaging yet calming. It really strengthens my love of horror media. Your thumbnails are really good too! I find them really eye catching and it feels very retro and nostalgic lol. Your videos inspired me to watch "Return to Oz" and "Hellraiser" (loved them both!). I really recommend that you check out The Little Nightmares (1 and 2) video games to review. It's so dark, whimisical, and creepy. Also, I really recommend the "Berserk" manga by Kentaro Miura. It's long and still unfinshed but the horror is quite amazing. The story is tragically horrifying and the art is amazing. If you live lovecraftian horror, existentialism, and fantasy/horror I highly recommend. Also considering your love of horror, Junji Ito's manga would be a perfect fit. Especially Uzumaki.

Trying to reinvent the videogame's story is the reason why all these videogame movies fail. You can add on to it, but no director's vison will ever overcome the classic masterpiece. It's not that I think Change is bad, but Change for Change's sake is narcissistic. If you can't tell the original story, then you're not adapting the story. You're just making fanfiction.
