What I always loved about Lisa, was the little subtle implication that she doesn't actually want to kill you so much as just chase you away from her home while she searches for her mother. She knocks you out but leaves you alone until you wake up, and she only chases you out of her cabin without following even though she absolutely could have began following you out of the forest and even into the mansion. She'll kill you if you stand your ground, but it's like she just wants you to leave her and her territory alone rather than being mindlessly aggressive like all the other monsters.

@@CursedWheelieBin What makes me think that it was deliberate is they went out of their way to have the scene of her knocking out Chris or Jill but leaving them alone until they wake up. Just because it seems like they very deliberately had a scene of her NOT killing you when she had the chance, very much unlike every other infected creature you've encountered. Either they were trying to show she really doesn't want to kill you, or that she has some kind of thought process going on that the other mindless infectees don't have.

As an old fan, what I loved about Lisa Trevor is how well she's integrated into the overarching story. She was experimented not with the T-virus you fight in the REmake, but with the original virus that was the focus of 0 and was suppossed to be the focus of 4 before they scratched it. Her tentacles and her giant eye are there because she was injected with the Nemesis parasite and that made her body the source of what would eventually become the G-virus. I'm not entirelly sure that Lisa ever died, honestly. I expected her to show up in some capacity in some titles over the years like Outbreak. Lisa is ironically the closest they got for decades to what Umbrella was after, as she got the enhancements of a tyrant, the regeneration of the G-virus and got to keep a lot of her sanity. Arguably that was lost because of trauma more than the infection itself.

The mansion's insane construction actually ties into Lisa's story as well, as the architect behind the madness was her father, George Trevor. Oswald Spencer paid George a King's ransom to help him design a maddening labyrinth with insane puzzles and such to conceal his secret testing facility. The more George built the mansion, the more crazy he became...which is perhaps why it took him so long to realize that Oswald was using him, and planning on getting rid of him after the mansion was built. George dies realizing he lead his wife and child to their doom.

Fun fact, Jill's background as being in the army and former Delta Force would make her literally the most badass woman ever to have existed. Delta Force is THE Super Elite anti-terrorism Special Forces unit. In order to even get to apply for it you have to already be an outstanding member of the Army, they recruit from Green Berets, Rangers and even Navy SEALS sometimes. The trials to get into Delta Force are extremely tough, most wash out and to date, no woman has even passed them IRL. Thing is, Jill is like 22 or 23 by the time of RE1. Even for men, that's too young. Which means in order to qualify to apply for Delta and pass the trials, she would have to be like the Mozart of military operators, a real prodigy, and possibly borderline superhuman lol, her credentials are such that she would necessarily be way more badass than Chris who washed out of the air force. Maybe in more recent years they've given her a more realistic background, but I think her original is so badass.

REmake was my introduction to the series. It was early 2003, I was nine years old (soon to be ten), and my dad rented the game from Blockbuster. Though my experience with horror was limited at the time, I decided to give it a spin and see how I felt about it. The first thing I noticed was the control scheme - stiff, awkward, finicky. It took some getting used to, though not as much as some people might think. I got the hang of it, and over next few weeks, my dad and I experienced moments in this game that would forever be etched into my memory as iconic. A horde of zombies smashing through the windows of the east wing hallway. A giant, venomous snake slithering around in a dust-laden attic. Our brief foray into the residence and its myriad horrors, from the giant tarantulas in the rec room to the bloodthirsty sharks in the basement. While we're on the subject, let me take this opportunity to say that Richard's death really affected me at the time. It was one of the most tragic moments I'd ever experienced in a video game, and although it would be a long time before I picked it up again, I never forgot his heroic sacrifice. Wesker's betrayal was another shocking moment. When I first played this game, I didn't know the Resident Evil storyline and saw Wesker as the team leader, a father to his men. (Also, my dad played through certain portions of the game while I was at school - including the earlier segment of the lab where Wesker was revealed to be working for Umbrella.) When Chris and Rebecca encountered him again and he turned on us, it was the shock of all shocks. After we had completed the game and returned it to the rental store, it would be another seven years before I got a chance to experience REmake again, this time for the Wii. At sixteen years old, I was ready to relive the terrors that captivated me as a young child; in so doing, I also experienced a few new ones that I didn't get to see my first time around. I will never forget my first encounter with Lisa Trevor in her cabin atop the hill. When I entered the house, it seemed peaceful enough - almost like a safe room, but without the music. Turns out, I remembered this location from when I was nine, and I remember my dad telling me that there was a "really bad" enemy here at some point. Soon enough, I got the chance to see that enemy for myself. What I had encountered defied simple description. It was too grotesque, too eldritch to even comprehend. All I knew was that this thing was dangerous, and I'd better run. I fled the building and ran as quickly as I possibly could down the winding trail that led me there in the first place, never once looking back to see if she was still pursuing me. I didn't know if I was actually getting chased or not, and I wasn't about to find out. Few enemies have ever had this sort of effect on me before. She was a creature like no other. Today, REmake remains one of my favorite games of all time. No matter how many times I've played through it, I can never seem to overcome the perennial urge to immerse myself in the ornate, caliginous atmosphere of the Spencer Mansion. What I wouldn't give to experience this masterpiece anew all over again.

32:36 Personally, I've always kind of thought of the book version as the canon version since it addresses some glaring plot holes. Chief among them, Barry and Rebecca. In later games, these two are clearly alive and well. But in RE1, depending on who you play as, it's heavily implied that one of them dies. The book addresses this by creating a hybrid story that switches between Jill and Chris's stories and ends with Jill, Chris, Rebecca and Barry all escaping together.
@Warrior-Of-Virtue4 жыл бұрын
@Linda Niemkiewicz I thought it was pretty good.
@gabrielvaleriano25624 жыл бұрын
It's less of a plothole, more of a canon-noncanon ending type scenario. The good ending is obviously the canon one, as is true as well with Fallout 1 and 2, as well as Silent Hill. Your character dying in FO1 and 2 is a legitimate ending, there is also the ending for getting dipped into the vats - but FO2 couldn't happen if that happens in FO1, and New Vegas couldn't happen if FO2 didn't happen. In SIlent Hill as well, the Good + Ending (or whatever it's called) is the ending where Dadman McForgotthename escapes with the child as well as Cybil. This leads into Silent Hill 3, which claims that Dadman McForgotthename raised the child into Heather. So it's not really a plothole, as much as it could be taken as alternate universes.

@Linda Niemkiewicz very true. Especially since RE3 was one of the fan favourites (mine as well, best RE after Remake 1 and RE2 '98) and had probably the most infamous and iconic enemy of the whole franchise. But, they butchered it. As soon as i heard it got outsourced, i had a bad feeling about this. It could have been pretty easy remaking RE3 in the right way. Add the clock tower, sent Jill to the RPD, let Brad follow you at the beginning on top of the building, Nemesis destroys the helicopter, kills Brad THEN you run him over. Expand the city streets and give Nemesis more chances to stalk and chase you. Then give him a second form like in the original, and let him transform in his beast form at the lab. That's it. Just like the original, but expanded upon with the bigger hospital and stuff. And still Capcom managed to screw this game up. I don't get it.
@splash_0674 жыл бұрын
@Linda Niemkiewicz Capcom noticed how much people liked the way they gutted RE2 in it's remake so that's why RE3 remake is the way that it is
@IMATR0LL0L0L4 жыл бұрын
@Kenzie Jean I think you should. Plus the first half of 3 happens before 2 and there's references to 2 in 3 and playing the RE2/3 remakes in any order doesn't cause any story confusion, etc. I would play 3 to get some of that actiony horror and then switch to 2 to get a more tense, difficult, "RE" horror experience that's closer to the roots of the series

Excellent essay Suzi. This is by far the most articulate and academic review of Resident Evil. My personal opinion on why Crimson Head's are so frightening is how they don't run. They hobble towards you at an uncanny speed and it throws off your sense of observing body language. It is one of many ways the game is engineered to prey upon human senses.
