In my opinion, the best song they ever did. I bought this LP in '72 (after buying the "Virginia Plain" single) and this track entranced me then and still does now - I'd go so far as to say this is one of my favourite top 5 songs ever. There again, what do I know........(!)

This song is fucking awesome, Roxy's masterpiece perhaps. The version on Viva is utterly sublime but so is the rest of that record, one of the greatest live albums ever put together. The song is so good even Bowie couldn't resist paying homage via Tin Machine.

OK, it's pretty raw and rough and hard-going in parts, but damn, it's unbelievable what confidence and ability these guys had, for such a new band. It's not like they'd been doing pub gigs for a decade or anything. There's a sophistication to this song that most other bands couldn't even approach.

@@poltergeistfm the middle part from 5:30 is quite unfinished, raw or whatever, may be redundant. I like the flow the song has on the Long Player. In particular, the constant beat of the drums that keep the 3 parts of the song perfectly together. It is one of their best and one of the best.

Soon this piece of music will be 50 years old and you can still hear it as if it were new. Surprisingly, you can also hear old music, several centuries old, as opposed to old literature, again and again, as if it were the first time. Music does not age. Literature does.

Hmm, that's a real problematic point of view...Would you deny that Shakespeare has nothing to say to humanity today? Or, even if you're talking about the language itself you don't think just listening to Shakespeare recited is no longer a pleasant experience...?

I would almost think , you never noticed , Roxy's drums ? I know they are a little bit further , in the back ground , as you call it , but pardon my comment , for me and I heard this album first , when it was brand , harry spankers and strait after that for at least 10 years , I could not start my day without it ! So , maybe this is all a bit unfair , since Roxy was one off the prime example's off bands , associated with producing a " wall of sound " and belief you me , life , they where nothing short of that ! But that is also , why I tell no more about , drums and things , find out yourself , you won't regret it .

Wow! Love this John Peel version almost as much as the original. I think this is more raw and you can definitely hear Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana influence in the guitar work. Hendrix could make incredible sounds but you can't tell in parts of this if it's guitar, oboe, sax, keyboard or what the hell it is. Brian Eno was amazing. This song is so well put together I'd rank it up there w Bohemian Rhapsody. What a BRILLIANT band. They have given me such enjoyment during a difficult time in my life. God Bless Roxy Music

Hello There ! Thanks Ivor - yeah ! really great version on viva! [ but it has been edited, chopping out Eddie Jobson's violin virtuosity - still fantastic thou ! ] but i do prefer the rawer version - more Sonic Attack & Brain Eno too ! but then the slicker Roxy Music is Superb too. - good thing is we can have both of them !! Cheers to Resident Poltergeist ! variety been the spice of life !? the unedited version on viva ! apparently used to be on " wolfgang's vault " - u could try contacting Wolfgang Deushle - must be the same guy i would of thought !?. Next on the list to enjoy will be " In Every Dream Home A Heartache " - another Roxy Music masterpiece !! the reason i probably prefer the John Peel Session Is because i am a Hawklord & an old glammy / punk rocker ! - punk aint dead ! - its just revolting -revolution rock ! All the best to all the true [ Roxy ] music believers . Kind Regards to all from Andy Beard xxx
