Demonstration Only
Another take on my Mystics type resin pieces. This piece is using white resin (coloured with resin ink) along with mica pigment powders. Short video 2x speed no mixing or sound.
Stay safe and take appropriate safety measures when working with resin and pigment powders.
Still early days with this method. The white encroached into the mica more than I would have liked so I will continue to play with the method and get cleaner lines.

It's beautiful Chris. And I'd rather listen to you through the weather than to not hear you at all, you have a calm way to talk us through what you're doing :-)

the only thing wrong with having white neg. space is that if the resin being used is not high quality, in time it may turn yellowish, and obviously change the visual aspect of the canvas.

Agree. I have seen some studies done on the rate of yellowing across different brands and all resins/varnishes yellow over time. Same thing happens in crafting with glues and finishes. Tricky to incorporate that into your design.

i love your videos! im looking to begin my own resin art journey and i was wondering what you use to prime your surfaces (like mdf board or canvas, etc) if anything?

I like to use low sheen house paint. It gives enough coverage and has a bit of grip for the resin to adhere nicely too. I also use gesso but I have had some issues with clumping where small bits of it seem to rise in the resin.

Try to cover everything with white, give a little thicken and only then on top of the color cast drawing. Thank you for this video.

Hi Chris, I have been watching your videos with great interest, and am busy gathering the bits and pieces to make art! I generally try painting with acrylics, and have been having a go at pouring. I must admit, pouring paint to get cells is an enigma to me. The infatuation with cells will die off and we will be left with an ongoing love of abstract I hope. I love watching you and the information you share with us. Are you going to be doing more? I do hope so. Do you have a blog or a following on Facebook please? I have looked but not found you. I live in the UK and resin art is going to be expensive, but I have fallen in love with the beautiful canvases that you can achieve.x

Sorry to re-ask a question you’ve addressed, but let me ask it differently. Your preferred resin...is it acrylic resin, poly resin, epoxy resin, or some other type of resin?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry. I use epoxy resin.

Great video Chris, I have tried white and black backgrounds...hands down I think black in best for contrast and making those mica colors pop!

It was a good challenge to rethink the colour scheme to the more neutral colours that don't work as well with black. Its nice to understand the difference. Eg. Lacing is wasted LOL

I was quite nervous because white is so unforgiving. I love the look but it has to be stark white white. 😄

Just wondering what would happen if you were to put resin over the canvas and then add the colors??? Is there a right or wrong way to do this?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't think there is a right or wrong...... just whatever suits you flow and environment. You learn more by playing with all the different ways and I am quite fascinated by the different effects you can get from pouring or laying out your colours in a different order.

Hi Chris! I have to say I'm addicted to watching your videos. what brand of resin do you use? I tried some off brand from Home depot and quickly I learned that wasn't meant for art! it hardened as fast as I mixed it with my pigments! Keep the videos coming!

Thks Ana 😄 I have to say that I am not wedded to a particular brand of resin but rather than a type. So for this type of work I use a resin that mixes 2:1 (2 part A : 1 part B) the resin is fluid enough to move with a hairdryer and has a reasonable working time. Because resin is expensive I wait for sales and coupons and just make sure I use one that has UV protection. The resins from hardware stores that are meant for wood are generally designed for quick dry (ratios of 5:1 etc) and like you found out too difficult to work with in art. We are such a far flung group that i would normally suggest that you get small packs of various brands that you can buy easily in your area and give them a test run on something small. It may look an expensive way of finding what works for you but you will save money and frustration level in the long run by doing your experiments up front rather on your bigger artwork.

Great info, Thank you for sharing! it makes sense to do as you suggest, trying the different types in smaller quantities as the can be quite pricy. But oh boy, the result can be fantastic, as I can see by your work! Thank you again and happy painting!

Do you put the clear resin for to make it more fluid? I'm sorry, I have so many questions.
@crisscross104

If you mean the line before I put the mica down..... Its to give the mica a smoother path but contain it slightly until it settles. If you cover the whole thing in clear the mica will travel wide.

Do you have a particular brand of mica powder you use?
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
I buy the mica on ebay and I think they are unbranded. Look for soap and candle making supply shops or nail salons. they tend to be cheaper than your art supply stores. It comes down to how it behaves and then learning how to make it work in your piece.

So pretty! Do you add resin to your colors or is that resin you pour down first? Love your work!!!
@crisscross104
@crisscross104 7 жыл бұрын
I mix the mica powder in a small amount of resin, I then put a small line of clear resin down first to contain the spread of the mica and pour the mica mix in that line of clear.

I have used a couple of different ones. JustResin (aussie brand) Liquitex and then a white pigment paste from Aldax Moulds (aussie company). Pluses and minuses on all of them when used with mica.
