The colors are mixed into resin and then the piece is created from there. I use pigments, pastes and micas that are developed to be used in resin. I have not painted the background before hand. I have painted a resin piece to play with layering and adding depth before, but not in this case.

Thanks. You are asking about working time. Most resins average about 30-40 minutes working time. This brand I can get up to 2 hours working time. It's an awesome resin. Stone Coat Art Coat and it has no VOCs, scratch resistance, heat resistance up to 400 degrees and UV protection. Once the piece is done, it will be 8 hours until you can touch it with your hands (super flexible at this stage) and then cure time of 24 hours (take out of molds).

Amazing and great tutorial very helpful to a beginner like me thanks. Could i just ask a question - why do my colours sink when trying to dirty pour - i'm using epoxy resin and have tried a few types but keep having similar issues.
@ClaraLawrence4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Certain colors like whites and some metallic will sink. Sinking is a common thing with resin and doing a dirty pour is a gamble. I find that pouring your colors into a container and then immediately (but very slowly) pour it onto the canvas has the best results. There is minimal manipulation I will do after I pour other than covering the surface and rotating to give movement.

@@ClaraLawrence OK thanks, so are you mixing acrylic paint with your premixed resin or powdered pigment ?

Tom Johnson I tend not to use acrylic paints as they behave funny and you have to be extremely mindful of the amount you add as it will change the chemistry fast of your resin and it will turn to marshmallow fluff consistency and not be usable.

Oh dear. You are at that exact point in which I discovered "Wait, you can add color into resin". Yes, it is a type of paint, but mostly pigment powders or pastes that work with resin. Water based paints like acrylics are tricky to add to resin. But yes, these colors are mixed into resin and then painted with them. It is such a magical thing.

This is absolutely gorgeous! These are my favorite colors! Question: can I just acrylic paint to color the resin, or do I have to use the colored resin colors? I do have pigments from Arteza that I can use but they won't give me the depth that your paints do. Thank you.
@ClaraLawrence4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. The tricky thing about acrylic paints is there is water content in them. Water changes the chemistry fast in resin. I have used it before, but too much and it will set up super fast or go to a marshmallow fluff consistency. I wouldn't do it. If you don't have access to pastes or pigment powders, try alcohol inks to color. The white alcohol inks might break up into particles, so stay clear of those. Once I switched to resin designed pigments and powders I was super happy with the saturation of colors I was getting. Check out Artist Till Death's website and use code "howdy" for 5% off. You can get Color Obsession (which she carries) in tiny bottles to give it a try without much pinch on the pocket book. I do this all the time when trying out new colors. Sometimes I won't invest in the larger bottles if I don't like the itty bitty ones.
