I bought a new Casio calculator and was disappointed to discover no 1/x button. I just realised about the x-1 thanks to this video. Cheers Joe Btw when you get the initial answer on the screen (1/rt) if you press x-1 it automatically converts to the final rt👍you should do a video on tips involving the Casio calculator with regards to electrical equations👍

Never been good at fractions - and Iphone doesn't calculate them with native app. Is there a better way to do it with decimal only? I have: 1/27(0.037037) + 1/10(0.1) + 1/10(0.1) = 0.237037 - - - 0.237037 * 1000 = 237.037/1000 - - - flip over to 1000/237.037 = 4.218751 = 4.22ohms. Brilliant videos, just what I've been looking for without them being 15yr old videos on youtube!

Hi Iain. Thanks for the comment. Your iPhone has a reciprocal button if you turn it sideways. It's marked 1/x. If you type the bottom number of the fraction first then press 1/x it gives the decimal equivalent. So your button press would go 27, 1/x, +, 10, 1/x, +, 10, 1/x, = then pressing 1/x again should spit out the total resistance. Hope this helps and please keep watching!

Hi Joe just wondering is PRODUCT/SUM rule to be used with 2 parallel resistors and the reciprocal rule to be used with more than 2? Also these videos are great and a massive help in my studies 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@JoeRobinsonTraining2 жыл бұрын
That's the general rule Lyndam yes. Although the reciprocal rule can be used for 2 resistors also and it is possible with a few more steps to repeatedly use product over sum with more than two resistors, but it gets a bit confusing.

Hi Joe, could you please explain why you would not just use a 5 ohm resistor in series instead of using 3 larger resistors in parallel to get a lower resistance?

not many people seem to do this but i would do 1 over, 1 over 10 + 1 over 18 + 1 over 27 and always get the correct answer

I've always wondered why its called 1/RT since its not the total value yet its more subtotal? 1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ... RT = 1/RST = ... :) But nice explanation , though I think the basic divides are simpler than fractions, buts thats me and my cheap phone calculator lol
@JoeRobinsonTraining5 жыл бұрын
Good observation, technically 1/RT is the reciprocal of RT, you could calculate it as RT=1/(1/R1+1/R2+1/R3... etc.)

Are you saying you have to buy a fancy calculator or an iPhone to be able to do this calculation? I have seen this done on a basic calculator using only division and add. Disappointed in your explanation requiring a fancy calculator hence the thumb down.
@JoeRobinsonTraining3 жыл бұрын
Sorry you felt the need to dislike my video. I'm not saying you need to buy an iPhone to carry out this calculation, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an iPhone as I believe you can get equivalent or better functionality from cheaper smart phones. I wouldn't recommend you buy a smart phone for the course that this video is designed to help with, this is because you can't take a mobile device into an exam. That's why at no point in the video do I mention iPhones or smart phones. That only leaves calculators, indeed you could do this calculation on a cheaper calculator, the problem is the input becomes trickier on some models without a reciprocal button. Also as the course continues you'll need to carry out other functions such as trigonometry which would be trickier or even impossible on cheaper calculators. The latest version of the calculator featured in this video can be bought for about £11 on Amazon and can often be bought for even less during "Back to School" promotions. This is a very reasonable investment in a device that will make your experience on electrical courses much easier. I have been recommending these devices since 2008 when I started teaching and will continue to do so. I hope this explanation eases your disappointment.
@anthonyminchinton33992 жыл бұрын
First my apology for the misdirection, I should have said SmartPhone rather than iPhone. Second my apology for the thumb-down (now corrected) as I did not realise a scientific calculator was required because of further lessons in this course. At the time I just needed a quick method to work out a problem I had at work and was a bit stressed. This is not my normal kind of work. Finally thank you for uploading these videos giving free education - please keep it up, they are most appreciated - eventually.
@stefan359t2 жыл бұрын
its not a fancy calculator is a basic but useful casio that does the job. the x-1 or 1/x is a handy button. You cant use a iphone or any mobile in the exam.
