anyway to smooth the edge on edge detection, getting some seriously jagged results if the object has square edges

Try the high quality setting in edge detection node. You can ofc always use a bit of blur to smooth the result

@@ResolumeVJSoftware thanks for the reply! have tried a few workarounds :) also is there a way to change the distance so it doesnt spread from the centre of the composition, it behaves very strangely on anything thats not perfectly centred?, can upload a video if you need.
