@@babaeren62 That's a good observation! The helmets the Empire use are Byzantine but the Ottomans ultimately conquered the Byzantine empire. Byzantine blacksmiths simply started working for the Turkish beyliks. It's for this very reason Turkish baths are so beautiful. Roman ideas and designs made their way into the cultures of the empires that came after them.

Just to clear a few things up from the comments. I use wildlings and battania have no equivalent to sword and shield infantry and wildings are the closes things they have, the other choice is heavy spear men which for obvious reason stand just a little of a chance against infantry , (as i said in the video oathsworn dont exist in vanilla custom games) Additionally, taleworlds have put little to no time into the custom games so the only thing AI do is charge at one another, so please don't complain no tactics are used, of course it would change the outcomes but unfortunately i work with what i'm given as doing this is a campaign is near impossible anyway as it adds in way more factors. And last point, It's a video, not a scientific experiment, there is no true "Best Infantry" in bannerlord, you would have to factor in morale, leadership, reknown, experience, terrain, numbers, allies, tactics and so much more which the custom game doesnt include any of. (seriously i had to download a mod just to be able to choose the right unit, it doesn't even have that in the vanilla game) But as a final point, once again this is the first video in what i hope to be a series of them so i can improve and add/remove what does and doesn't work in future vids.

Yeah its quite hard to test properly. But I've got over 300 hrs into this game now and I have used all of the units extensively. The best line infantry with a shield, is the Wildlings. You have to keep them in a line, no charge order. Allow them the time to get 2 to 3 volleys off before they fight in melee and they wreck everything. Legionary is good, but only 1 pila, once they throw it, no more. The best non-shielded inf is the Aserai Palace Guard with the 2H axe (executioner, 120 base dmg!), in a pure melee fest, nothing comes close. The Vlandian Voulgier is pretty decent too for 2H (with throwing axes).

@@SilverforceX ma boi's not reading, it's a head to head charge, without the application of tactics, just pure combat prowess and rng of the game. Also I agree that skirmishing infantry that are pretty decent in melee has a potential to be the best due to the sheer amount of force multiplier that javies gave. But the results had shown itself, also in games frontal charge is as valid strategy as hold line formation

My only issue with the way it was set up is we don't get to see how Empire vs Aserai or Khuzait vs Sturgia etc. would go, see every faction face every faction. That would give an even better picture of best vs worst or if anyone can claim to be the best because what if in a hypothetical the Aserai would beat the Empire or Vlandians losing to the Sturgians, so I'd like to see more matchups to get the full picture.

actually i tried myself. if you just blindly f1 f3 charge. the vlandia is gonna lose because they couldn't recover from the massive death from throwing projectile. i've put both empire legion against vlandia sgt in siege or open field (shield wall formation). vlandia is better.

I really though this would be more descicive for the empite... because without that first volley... the vlandians would have won... and this is whithout taking into acount their overall viability (copy from the last post) vlandians biggest strength is that they have no weakness (in theory, not factoring in A.I.) They have awesome lances vs cav, big strong shields for arrows and maces for armor. Their drawback is, that they are the ideal unit for everything, but not the best in close combat! Legionaires with their high armor and awesome weapons should take this one based on stats alone

@@roojackaroo8517 He's talking about the rest of the Vlandian line up. And he's right. They don't have any "weak spots" other than a lack of horse archers, which I think are overrated. Their Sharpshooters are boss, the Sergeants are excellent melee combatants, and the special troop line of Squire -> Banner Knight have amazing heavy cavalry power (including lances, that's where the lances came from).

Good video. Could be improved with a round robin so we can see each troop up against every other troop. Then drop the ones with the worst records, complete any tie breakers and then move through the brackets. Would take more time but would be more comprehensive. I doubt it would change much but it would show us how each factions lines up against every other.

You should try it out with a mod that makes infantry to use shields while they are running towards the enemy line. It doesn't forbid them from throwing, as javelins are one handed, but it might give a ton of extra points to the factions that rely on melee more.

Great video. I think you did a good job making this as fair as possible. It is really sad to see my favorite faction (battania) and the sturgians perform so poorly. The sturgians are really in need of a buff to their melee troops (and everything for that matter). Both the sturgians and battanians have garbage cav., so they really should get buffed infantry to counter that. BTW I think it would have been interesting if you had continued the video to show which faction's infantry was the worst. Maybe in the next faction competition you could show best and worst. Thanks for the awesome upload.

Usually, infantry fights in shiltron, square or shield wall. Just opened line is something I personally use very, very rarely, basically only if I need to avoid having troops slowed down by covering themselves with shields - when speed becomes more important than protection. Given the fact some infantry units have larger shields, some smaller ones, some have good thrown weapons, some don't have any at all, actually using formations would possibly not just change results, but also would be way more fair comparison in context of how those troops are actually being used by most players who do not go on full noob mode.

Best competition ever! I'm going to stop training imperial archers and battianian wildlings and get more legionnaires! For a sequel I'd propose this: Fight different forces against 200 legionnaires, scoring points for every kill minus every lose (over two battles). Viewers can propose mixed infantry armies of 200 and you can pick or have a poll. I'd use 100 shield infantry of each faction plus whatever infantry complements these best. Like Vlandian Sergeants with Khuzait Darkhans or any other combo people wanna see. People can test for themselves and propose solid combos of tanky shields, damage dealing two handed and/or throwing infantry and mention their average points over many battles so you can pick the best contestants. Some armies will fail but most suggestions will win twice. One will score most points, the champion mix for next video perhaps?

Have played through this game as an Empire faction and it was almost too easy during battles once you've got a large chunk of legionnaires. Recently started a new playthrough as Battania and honestly, couldn't win any significant battles. Switched to Sturgia and had the exact same problem....these factions just get completely bowled over. Still a lot of balancing to do in this game!

Lots of comments talk about the disadvantages of Vladians not having projectiles. But take a look when the front line makes contact: second line of Vladians swith to two-handed weapons that can effectively reach to the enemies while the second line of their opponents can't hit anything. So basically the Vladians are having a lot more dps in close combat. You can try using polearms/ two-handed weapons in an infantry line yourself and you would realize how you can hit enemy front liners that you cannot otherwise hit with one-handed weapons.

Vlandian's infantry are pretty badass, considering how far and how well they did with a huge disadvantage of not having throwing weapons to get a lot of damage at the start of each battle. I would say that fact alone means they are pretty swole in general.

My perfect army with no special troops for beta. Infantry- vlandian sergeants, the reason I'd pick them over empire is because spears will wreck cav In a charge. If you're not up against a cav charge their shield wall is superior to protect your archers. They're basically op. shock and heavy infantry value units. Archers- imperial Palatine guards, they have 160 bow plus heavy armor and decent melee defense if need be. Horse Archer- obviously khuzait heavy horse Archers. Cavalry- this is the one that's really up in the air as the khuzait, vlandians and aserai are all pretty good. Personal preference as a warband player would be vlandia.

In the unmodded game it's not like this result at all. Legionary have no thrown weapons, so they take losses in the charge. While other troops with thrown weapons, they should be holding the line and not charge in, this gives them more time to throw the 2nd or 3rd volley before melee contact. In fact, Wildings and Darkhan are the best line infantry when used correctly (hold the line, throw javs at enemies then fight after enemy is nearly all dead).

Infantry aside Bannerknights have insane one handed but you notice the obvious difference when they are on foot during sieges. They just butcher everybody even when they are in small numbers. They have Fian Champion effect when they fight on foot against regular infantry. Druzhinnik Champions are on par with Bannerknights in terms of stats but i did not try them on foot.

Also mate, if you use troops with throwing weapons you never charge them. Hold the line let enemy inf charge and eat 2 or 3 volley of thrown weapon. If you charge, they only get 1 volley off before contact. Wildings in this case, would have won if they hold and throw at the charging enemy. And its important to point out, Legionary do not spawn with throwing weapons in the unmodded game, so they would have lost.

It was a bug which they fixed they have only 1 pila though and if they throw it no other spear for horses.

Since patch 1.4 the Pila that they always have had is a thrown weapon. It has not been before.

Pila have always been throwing weapons, AI just hardly did it and you had to toggle it with x or something. You can do the same thing to use a Javelin as a spear.

I want to see 2h troops battle first Then Horse archer The lance cav and spearmen will be hard to do, since when I tried it the infantry don't take out their spear if they have alternate weapon and are not facing cavs, and the lance cav don't do cycle charge at least in the battle simulator

It's funny how rarely pikemen use their pikes in this game. Historically that would've been the default, and they would only switch to swords the enemy managed to get past the pike wall.

Thx for the vid! I know it's a competition of shield infantry here, but fun question: what will happen if Sturgian Shocktroop meets Sturgian Veteran warrior? My test 100 vs 100: shocktroop win 4/5!! They won despite that 1/4 get knocked down by javelins in the first few seconds, which shocked me. Give it a go! ;)

Without Shield Wall formation the value of ranged attacks is way higher that what it should be. I believe Vlandia is best in larger battles were its more clustered or in castle battles because maces are smaller.
