To be fair the devs are even more guilty of this, given how easily arrows defeat even heavy armor with high consistency. Agincourt was notable in history for a reason, but in Bannerlord every battle is Agincourt basically :D.
@MajorCoolD
@MajorCoolD 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheMelnTeam Agreed, even with the best armor and 'high' HP it takes only like 3-4 arrows to take you down. I know I will get a lot of hate for this, but I personally think that right now bows are overpowered, especially with the fairly high accuracy of the AI, one can decimate troops RAPIDLY. Though in all honesty its not easy to find a good balance. But right now... I see little meta reason not to go bowmen rather than crossbows since even the higher tier weaponry there the Bows consistently do at least 2/3rds of the damage of the crossbows and shoot 3 times faster overall. It's also how armor seems to do VERY little difference to arrow effectiveness simply due to how the current damage system works. But I personally think they could easily fix it by making arrows less effective against armor, or armor simply twice as effective against arrows.

@TalonAshlar
@TalonAshlar 4 жыл бұрын
There is actually already is a way to order your troops to engage a specific target in mount and blade banner-lord. You need to assign them to the light cavalry class and select advance. By the way all the company slots have their own ai profile and when set to advance will act differently IE cavalry in the infantry slot will form tighter formations and try to dress ranks with units on either side.

Few months late but hopefully this tip still helps somebody: Another trick you can use (although slightly cheesy) is to use the archers the same way he did in this video where they're positioned above the enemy waiting for the charge. As the enemies move in, your archers could kill as many as 100 men, then riiiight as the enemies are about to reach your infantry, hold tab and retreat from the fight. After this you'll be able to restart the fight, but the enemy will have many less troops as your archers just shredded them. Then you can go ahead and set up your archers again with full arrows, I've won 100v1000 fights using this method :)

Morale is honestly such an important factor in battles. That's why experienced, higher tier troops, is much more valuable than a numbers advantage. I have a cavalry-first type of army and when the enemy soldiers start to flee, that's when I can inflict most damage while my high-tier infantry just tanks damage and stalls.

A more advanced and micro-management-requiring Tactic I use EVERY time: As soon the the Shield Walls bash against each other, PULL your Archers to their LEFT FLANK. Back it up with cavalry though. You pull them to the left flank, because the enemy is holding their SHIELDS in the LEFT HAND, so since you're coming from their RIGHT SIDE, you are shooting that juicy uncovered softspots, and every shot WILL BE A HIT. That's a tactic used by many Generals in History in Reallife, for example Hannibal Barca or Scipio Arficanus. If you even have some extra cavalry, just let them Hammer and Anvil the rest of the enemies, and let them pick off any withdrawing units. Just try it out, I've won battles with this tactic outnumbered 4:1 with Tier 3-4 units. Sure, it requires some sort of Nerve-racking MM, but that way you can play the game on realistic difficulty as it is supposed to be played, and turn up the fun factor tenfold. Maybe, if you are reading this ESO, you can make a vid about it, as I think it would be a nice tactical weapon every good General should have ;)

Uhm the Ai is braindead. No advanced tactics required to win any battle in this game. i can summarise the commands that win you every battle in this game. 4-f6, 2-f3-f3, Wait 45 seconds 1-f1-f3 wait 5 seconds and 0-f1-f3 or 0-f6. And the battle is won with less then 20 casualties. Yey onto the next battle... :)

Having studied ancient warfare, particularly Greek and Roman I was already employing these tactics but it is a good tip for people who are unaware of this strategy. I also have cavalry (Imperial Elite Cataphracts) on one flank and veteran horse archers on the other flank. Also, I have a large number of companions as a mobile fighting force as auxiliary cavalry all bound to the 5 key (skirmishers) which I station behind my line and can be deployed to either flank as required. Good tip on your earlier video to use Battanian Fian Champions and Imperial Palatine Guards combined as ranged units. I favour Imperial Legionaries as infantry instead of Berserkers and they do the job nicely of holding the line and halting the enemy advance and mopping up routed units. Keep the videos coming battle brother. They are much appreciated.

@@MetalGamer666 I guess in my comment I confused the issue of my study of ancient history and ancient warfare with the tactics I use in the game. What I was trying to convey is that I have a decent understanding of ancient military tactics. I don't suggest that I am a Caesar or an Alexander but I understand much more about this subject than the gaming casual would concerning military tactics. My mistake making a comment that appeared to merge two different empires and ages of warfare with the tactics I employ in this game.

I highly recommend using horse archers as well, not for harassing the enemy troops but for the rate of fire. I personally use crossbowmen, not regular archers. Proportions would be 10 Crossbowmen, 10 Mounted horse archers and 10 infantry. I can absolutely guarantee you`ll annihilate upwards of 3.5 to 1 proportions of enemy armies. Also, I highly recommend placing some 10-15 cavalry units to your left, that is generally where the enemy cavalry comes from...

I notice that A.I don't tend to have many archers in their ranks and even if they do they're normally low level archers so they have lower range, so all you need is about 40-50 mid to high tier archers which is easy if you just farm big looter partys or just large bandit partys in general and then whenever your in a fight your archers will always out number and out range the enemy and just melt them.

I feel like this is a good beginner video, but even so you should probably clear up a few points. Like the missconceptions of infantry blocking archers. If you can have your infantry in front of your archers right off the bat without them blocking line of sight, that's something you should probably do, cause it let's you focus on other things before the infantry forces meet. It also allows your shield wall to absorb a lot of the enemy archers' arrows, which might otherwise hit your archers. With armored forces like Battanian Fian Champions the damage of that wouldn't be the main problem, but rather their animations getting interrupted, slowing their rate of fire. The only real reason to have your infantry behind your archers are if they would block the line of sight, in which case having them like 1m or less behind them so they can quickly charge is better, cause that way you don't leave a gap for the enemy cavalry and it takes less time for the infantry to get in position once the enemy archers are in range. Further more, I know you didn't touch on cavalry this video, but for those interested, the idea is that your cavalry harass the enemy, to lower their moral, and take out as much of their cavalry as possible, before the infantry meet, at which point a final cavalry charge is often made from behind to take out the archers.

Aye....my shield wall infantry is *always* in front....in hopes that the enemy will try and shoot down my infantry first, which are a lot cheaper in resources then a squad of high tier archers. My archers will be behind them hopefully on higher ground, and my cavalry off in the back to one side or the other... As soon as my infantry gets engaged the cav will start flank orders .

There is a pretty good experiment built in the game. Just choose the custom battle from the menu. One can quickly found that 500 horse archer beats any combination of armies. So it is worth it to build an army like that. Very hard to beat, but you will ride your horses for a long time making rounds around your enemy sometimes. I really like it though.

Another word to the wise, use your fire at will button. At the start of the engagement, hold your fire. Wait until the enemy is 75-100 meters closer than the archers usually start firing, then fire at will. This will save ammunition, because the first two volleys rarely hit at such a long distance. Once the enemy starts fleeing, hold fire again, wait for the next wave of enemy to get close, then fire at will again. Usually you will only have enough ammo for 2 waves of enemy, at which point you are going to have to charge and break them with everything you have.

Personally I find changing shield warriors to shielded skirmishers might work better and I dont use shieldwall formation on them they just stand behind archers in loose formation and when enemy gets close they throw their javelines and if enemy has not been routed yet i charge with the skirmishers. kill some of the runners and then form the line again before the reinforcements hits. rinse and repeat. These tactics work only against forces that dont have lots of cavalry as they counter archers but small horse forces die before their charge hits.

Skirmish can be really great to deal damage and keep your troop safe. But instead of using advance, use your position tactic but mimic skirmish and lower the frequency to ask they move. Also use those infantry to block enemies from getting close to archers while they fall back. If first wave of enemies break, you can take back those ground again and kill enemies much easier rest of the round. if the map is flat enough this is the best tactic you can use.

interesting strategy, there is the obvious fian vs recruits comment but i think the idea is still valid. for my strat i tend to have a loose formation archer wall on a hill with a shieldwall infantry team infront an slightly below them, the wall tends to take most of the arrows from the enemy an my guys can still shoot with plenty of visibility, then slightly earlier than you ill charge my shieldwall to keep the enemy at bay an allow my archers to keep nailing them, i found in harder situations against better trained armies the arrowfire would do too much damage to my guys, hence the shieldwall 'tanking' in the front

This method totally works, my army of 99 mixed men destroyed an army of 197 men...I will be sending you the screenshots later...now get a video showing how to input cavalry.

If you can win in the field, build trebs and move them to reserve. Deploy 4 at once. It will kill a good chunk of defenders before the assault and if you wait for the trebs to breach both parts of the wall before assaulting it's the most trivial way past walls in the game. Downside is that it takes a long time to make 4 trebs, so AI will pile a ton of troops onto you. Hence the need to be able to win field battles.

@@TheMelnTeam yeah I've just now got into building trebuchets, but I've been saving them to use with the actual assault. I'll have to try this out. And yeah field battles are still fun. Just gotta watch out for those one shot arrows and lances a lot more now...

Best video yet ESO. Looking forward to more in this series!! Would love to see if it's worth using all the different unit types in commanding (Heavy infantry, Heavy/Light cav for example). Especially with large armies It feels odd not having non-shields and shielded lumped together, but not sure I have micromanagement skill to make it effective. 6:4 Archer, warrior ratio is a great tip also!! Thanks!

I agree with all your tactics, but I've got to point out that it doesn't take a tactical genius to win 2:1 fights when you're force is all imperial legionaries and fian champions and your enemy is mostly recruits lol. Honestly you could have just hit F1 F3 at the start of the battle and rolled them.

Ok, probably dumb question but how did you get the cool looking banner? I can only see an option to create a plain background with a symbol on that (that can be mono-colored and resized).

Hmm, I hope there is still a reason for shock infantry and the skirmish (javelin armed) infantry? I would have thought the javelin infantry could skirmish and launch their javs (in loose formation) at the oncoming enemy. Also, how would you use the Battanian and Sturgian cavalry? Specifically the javelin armed and sword armed cav? Those are my favorite factions.

There have been some claims that footmen don't fight well while in a shield wall. There is a YT video on the topic. I haven't tested it myself though, so I can't deny or confirm.

You need to charge them or they will just stand their in a shield wall and not attack

I didn’t see you uses F2 (face enemy/direction) order. The battle that your inf was in a way of your archers and you used drag order you can use the face direction instead. I always use it on my archers so they don’t move because they can still shoot anywhere while they don’t have to move around when the battle become chaotic which people are everywhere. I saw the AI archers do that a lot and they don’t do much damage that way as you said.

13:00 could this drawers methode be better with 2 lines of archers one shooting while the other is running to get always one rank shooting , even better if your infantry get javies too? i guess is more a matter of micro managment of units. is it a thing usefull to create composite lines : like skirmishers mixed with spears for protection or to mixe all kinds of cavs together or else ?
