Ron , I appreciate your memories of Air Force life. I left Iowa , was commissioned in 1969, Willy in early 1970 , and went to SEA . Retired from the AF in 1998. Still fly at Lake of the Ozarks. Thanks for the memories and your dedication to our country. Bruce Day.

3 times annual income for a house. That sounds awefully cheap by todays standards.

Not when you include the difference in minimum down payment and high mortgage interest rates back then. Total cost to pay off a 30year is actually slightly better now relative to median income.

Love ya Ron. Boy can you spin out a yarn. You “digress” indeed. But I love your stories. Keep it up. My dad was a Tweet and Talon instructor at Williams in the mid 70s and trained with T33s at Laredo in the mid 60s, but his stories entertained me as well. He “pinked” a few guys as an instructor and it upset him sometimes. It wasn’t until I was older I realized he was kicking them out of flight training; but some of your tales let me know that a lot of wanna be pilots shouldn’t even be around aircraft. Great channel!

My father was a firefighter as well. I went to two years of a Christian school. I didn’t quite notice it when I was going there but several decades later when I sent my kids there, I noticed the two tear system you talked about. I was a broke charter pilot at the time and it was all we could afford to send our kids there. The big church donors kids lived a different life in that school than mine did. I accused the principal a couple times of not being very Christ like in how she treated some kids over others. Some day I’d love to tell you about my most epic stuck mic incident. After one of those you’ll forever check yourself before you go off on a cockpit rant.

I liked that part of the story about the three stars. There is a very similar story in the autobiography of a guy called Johnny Kent who flew with the RAF during WW2 and was still flying in the years afterwards. If I remember the story correctly, he was stuck in the Azores and looking for onward transport to the United Kingdom. At the time he was a group captain, which would have given him a rank insignia of four thin rings at the bottom of his sleeve. He very reasonably pointed out to the guys in charge of transport that there was one star for each ring, and apparently he got his priority. In reality, he was one rank below a one-star general. Still, you can't fault him for trying.

Interesting story, and also interesting side-stuff. :) There is a saying from one of my favorite novels that seems applicable here - "If you do not want it heard, then do not say it."

This reminds me of the cockpit tapes of the T-38 IP (prior Eagle Driver) who was screaming at the Japanese student to turn the cockpit heat off. I'm not sure of the disposition of his incident, but it certainly became infamous across the USAF flying community as an example of what not to do. From my experience, if they're using you as a negative reinforcement example, things didn't go well for the individual(s) in question.

Ron, my Dad was a T-38 IP at Vance from around 1974 to 1978. He tells a story of a pilot at Vance who got drunk at a dinner party off base, then crashed into the guard shack at the gate returning to the base in his car. Ever hear that story ?

O M G Unducted fan ? No more propellors. Is the aircraft propelled by the unducted fan ? Surely that would make it a propellor !

Unducted fan can be superior in that it can make noise with a lot less fuel . Maybe not dog whistle noise, but noise nonetheless.

Loved the great story, Ron! Sidetrack question… Do you have any experiences with, (I don’t recall what the Air Force designation was), but a Mitsubishi Diamond/Diamond IA/Beechjet 400/Beechjet 400A? The reason I ask I because I was sent to FlightSafety Maintenance Initial training for the 400 & 400A, back in the early 90’s. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the Beechjet, (mechanically or systems), but I have heard that pilots really liked it flying properties. Do you have any experiences or anecdotes about the airplane? Thank you, Sir!

No I don’t. That was after my time and never worked for Beech, although they tried to hire me at one point.

I don’t remember Ron telling this story in this way before. I would have remembered the Iran 3-star student. It was a stuck microphone which taught me the lesson that there’s always an audience. I had to relearn that 20 years later, but I digress.
