I came to know this orchestra through hearing about principal trumpet player John Aigi Hurn. This orchestra has an energy that many of the great orchestras of the world lack. The recording sound quality is second to none. I am absolutely amazed by the richness of sound that this orchestra can produce. Aigi is one of the finest principal trumpeters I have ever heard and it is heartbreaking to know he is no longer with us....thank you for leaving us with such fine recordings of his amazing talent.

Many of us came to know it from Disney's Fantasia 2000 in an abridged version by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 20 years ago that includes the full Apian Way climax. I've listed to so many versions trying to get the very best one. I have to say that the final section in Disney's version is the tightest and best recorded version I've heard, possibly helped by being in 5.1 sound but because the work as a whole was cut down I wanted a fuller version and have listed to SO many. I've heard some versions where the ending is plodding and others where it's a mess. The version on this video is really damn good, one of the very best, with great clarity and control. Superb.

Make sure you listen to the other 3 in the trilogy too. Fountains and Festivals. Both this and Festivals are a great boon to the gigging Trumpet player as they expand the trumpet section from the usual 4 up to 7 or 8.

Ottorino Respighi was a friend of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Respighi lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, for three years where he was first viola in the orchestra of the Russian Imperial Theater in Saint Petersburg. When Respighi told Rachmaninoff that he would like to orchestrate some of Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux, the composer not only approved of the idea, but provided Respighi with tematic material. Ottorino Respighi was a master of orchestration.
