I don't think Fountains is dull. It's probably easily the most poetic of the trilogy, BUT it does end quietly, so it has to be programmed with some care and thought. I'm happy to report that the Hyperion cd of original Ancient Airs is still available although one fewer than there was a few minutes ago since I just grabbed one.

Agree. The Bernstein "Feste" is amazing. A work that I really like, but is often forgotten, is the "Church Windows."

I love that work and am surprised it is not as popular as the Roman trilogy.

I totally agree...I love Church Windows. Another sleeper by Respighi that I think deserves more love is his beautiful Botticelli Triptych

Respighi ROCKS!!!! As a young "pre college" music student Respighi caught my ears/attention with Pines of Rome, but quickly hooked me with the Ancient aires & dances...WOW!!!! Been a huge fan ever since 👍

In the 1990s, i lucked into seeing the original works which made up the Ancient Airs and Dances and am happy you brought that delightful recording to your viewers attention

Nice to see a nod to the O'Dette disc of the original works. Years after that release, I was fortunate to be one of the proofreaders to bring the Chilesotti lute codex to a modern edition via Editions Orphée. Chilesotti was a musicologist and near contemporary of Respighi. The anonymous ca. 1600 lute book that Chilesotti transcribed to modern notation provided several pieces to the Ancient Airs and Dances.

I remember Leonard Bernstein did "Pines of Rome" on one of the Young People's Concerts to demonstrate the use of unusual instruments, including the record of a nightingale's song Respighi specified at the end of the third movement. Respighi was the first sampler.

Morning Dave, what a discovery Respighi's music was following your videos. Lost count but Muti, Neschling and Vecchia's conducting are part of my collection. Waiting for the next videos, maybe chamber works?. Will check a list of his compositions. Me cats were fighting with an "invader", as Finster opened the curtains at the precise moment you mentioned one of the greatest recordings ever. Should get that CD.

You'll probably get to it soon, but there's a wonderful EMI twofer of Respighi which includes the Trittico Botticelliano (ASMF & Marriner), a lovely piece which, believe it or not, I have heard in concert!

I will get to it, but half of it sucks, unfortunately.

Bernstein's PINES was televised in Concert in May, 1970, when the recording was made (it's on You-Tube). ALSO on You-Tube is the Svetlanov live Roman Trilogy..but I don't see it posted any longer. He did ALL THREE tone-poems on the same concert and, as I recall Svetlanov HIMSELF read Respighi's descriptions (in Russian) to the audience prior to conducting each work. [PLUG]: I'm hoping you will cover the RCA/Reader's Digest recordings ('64-68) "Pines" conducted by Kempe (good, but not great) but a STUNNING Feste and Fountains (New Philharmonia) conducted by Massimo Freccia, in splendid Charles Gerhardt-produced sound, a must-have for any fan of this music. I think the Kempe is pretty terrific.

@@DavesClassicalGuide I'll have to listen to it again; do you know the Freccia recordings?
