I've already seen a few comments jumping to his defense about how he doesn't contradict Church teaching. Well, I didn't say he does in the video. I was responding to his specific statement he published in response to Bishop Strickland and Cardinal Muller. But, if you want an indictment, here it is. Fr. Martin says that Church teaching is about, "...making those who feel excluded to feel included." That's an exact quote. Well, Fr. Martin has consistently promised that change is coming in the Church and that we should be looking at changing the language in the catechism. Well, I'm an orthodox Catholic who believes that doctrines are timeless and campaigning for change makes me "feel" excluded. And I guarantee I'm not the only one. Therefore, Fr. Martin, by his own definition, is making people feel excluded which is a violation of Church teaching according to his own definition.

@brightskysyl There really is no need to develop a catechism further. It is only a compendium of Church teaching. Think of it like a pocket dictionary. Not just that, think of it like a pocket dictionary for middle school kids. And when speaking of this particular catechism in comparison to others in the past, it is definitely no Webster's. Homosexual acts aren't described in detail but why should they be? Should this be a book that parents keep locked away from their children? It is clear that the catechism is speaking of any and all homosexual acts as intrinsically disordered. So what is a homosexual act? Well for one it is an "act". Two, it is an "act" that stirs up "sexual" passions. Three, it is an "act" that stirs up "sexual" passions between two people of the "same sex". "Homo" means "same" in Greek. I think we all can agree that caresses can stir up sexual passions, whether the person caressing intends to or not. At the very least, it is a near occasion of sin. Is admiring other person's physical appearance of the same gender an objectively disordered experience? Is there or could there be any passion? Is holding hands with your same gender friend out of comfort and platonic love an objectively disordered act? Is there or could there be any passion? If there is no passion, could it cause scandal? Is relying emotionally to your same gender friend an objectively disordered desire? Is there or could there be any passion? I don't understand why it should be impossible for SSA people to have disinterested friendships. Surely every friendship wouldn't constitute a near occasion of sin.

@brightskysyl I have a disinterested friendship with person who has experienced SSA. In fact, he is perhaps my closest friend. He was away from the Catholic Church for a while but has started to come back. In fact, he is going to a Catholic conference next month to rejuvenate his faith. He knows I would never condone it if he lived a lifestyle in open rebellion against God and he knows I care about him. I truly am sorry that other SSA people can't find the same type of friendships in the Church and I would offer them my prayers that they soon do. Yes, caresses don't always stir up sexual passions. People that didn't have a weakness in this area could do this without it being a near occasion of sin.

I agree. But... We all start our Christian journey somewhere. Sometimes this somewhere is a happy, loving home with Christian parents and normal (as in average) proclivities. Sometimes it's in a broken home or a war torn nation, or sexually unusual urges, or who knows what else, or some mix of these. As Christians we need to reach out and meet these people. This is a hard task, in part because we need to be compassionate and understanding of sins we ourselves don't share and wish to mistakenly judge harshly. In part it's hard because we need to balance that compassion with an unwavering commitment to rejecting our own sins including the mistake of accepting the sin when we accept the sinner. Finding a balance between rejecting sin while forgiving sinners is hard. But remember the parable of the dishonest steward. Jesus praised the man rejected for his mistakes when he forgave others. If one must err, let it be on the side of forgiveness.

@@cynthiax56 Are we allowed to lead them out of error? Are we allowed to point out that the Catholic teachings are ideals to aim toward, not rules to be condemned by? Or do we just say, "Sorry, you're a sinner. Instantly change the way I want or go to hell." The Bible touches on sexual morality. Yet it pounds on economic morality. Time and again we are told to take care of widows and orphans. Don't engage in unfair and unholy economic practices. Most of the Old Testament and much of the New are about these issues. Anti-gay passages are few by comparison. (They do exist, and I'm not claiming they don't or shouldn't be obeyed.) Now there is no practice so devastating to the poor as usury. It crushes people's lives. It tempts them into sins such as drug dealing which leads to over 25% of young men in poor neighborhoods being murdered. So, do you own a credit card? Do you own a bank account with a bank that issues credit cards? I can hear the justifications already. Don't bother. It's pretty much impossible to live in a modern society without supporting usury on some level. I understand that. I'm just asking you to show the same amount of forgiveness and understanding for LGBT sins as you do for your own.

@Tango Mike Vatican II is an valid Eumenical Church council called by one Pope, and the 16 documents it produced were signed & proglamated by another Pope. That makes it's docrines INFALLIBLE and BINDING on all who profess to be in communion with the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC Church. You can either accept that, or schism off to join the other Protestants who do not respect the universal Magisterial authority of the Bishops when acting in communion with the Pope. Martin Luther believed he could be his own authority and "reform" the Church to his liking. You either accept the authority of Vatican II and remain Catholic or leave as a Protestant.
@mcmemmo
@mcmemmo 6 жыл бұрын
@Tango Mike You must be a deeply disturbed person to write such obnoxious posts. Like it or not, there is a dividing line between Catholics & Protestants when it comes to the issue of authority. Catholics recognize and submit to the authority of the Magisterium (Pope, Bishops & Councils), but Protestants do not. Denying the authority of Vatican II or the legitimacy of a duly elected Pope, makes you a Protestant by definition. No accusation needed. At the Council of Trent, much of what Luther had to say was affirmed, but not all of it. The "Sola" doctrines were rejected, and for good reason. They don't work. In any case, the very notion of praying for the "purification" of the Church is by definition a form puritanism - where do you think the name "Puritan" comes from? I have nothing against followers of other religions. People are free to believe whatever they like as long as they don't falsely claim to be Catholic, and anyone who denies the authority of Vatican II, Pope Francis, or the Bishops who support him ARE NOT CATHOLIC.

Wouldn't the true Charity to walk with the Alcoholic to assist them in finding help to face their alcoholism? Wouldn't true Mercy to be to love my Brother enough to tell them the truth? I grew up in a secular family. I believed in God anyway by the time I was 5. My family said they were christian but all we did was Christmas. No church, no praying except Thanksgiving which was basically thanking God for stuff and things. I found myself by 8, talking to God randomly throughout my days. My sister became christian at that time and started reading the Bible to me every night as a bedtime story. She didn’t tell me it was truth, or what we were to believe. Then we started praying every night before bedtime for a short while. When my dad moved out, my mom remarried right away and my sister and I were more concerned about protecting each other. She became “spiritual” and her husband attacked my sister, then we moved in with my dad who was pretty much atheist. That’s when I was 12, I started getting into ouija boards and magic, and having night terrors. Sleep paralysis. When I was 14 I started wanting to get religion again. I started hearing this word Catholic. My mom vehemently objected (free love spiritism, they said Jesus sometimes). In high school, the kids from the Assembly of God had me going to their Wednesday church and taking communion that I didn’t even have training for, I didn’t know what I was eating or why I was eating it. I still only had eyes for the Catholic Church that no one wanted me to be. When I became of age, I got kicked out of my moms house, and got fired for not having a residence. Lived on the streets for two years. The only church that helped me was catholic. Lutheran Church told me I needed to leave the premises when I went for daily bread. Catholic Church gave me gas, food, and clothing vouchers and helped me get a job and keep my place to live. Got married to a guy who said he was catholic, who wasn’t, and it got me into a heap of trouble for 10 years. He was bisexual and a Wiccan and when I was 4 months pregnant with his child I came home and he was with another man. I left him and thought it hopeless because I only believed in one marriage. But I met a true catholic who helped me get converted and married him (after annulment of course). And we have four beautiful kids. I’ll never give up my Jesus or my catholic faith. ❤️❤️❤️

This is throughout the New Testament that was written over several decades. Eileen D What are you, some kind of "Sola Scriptura" Protestant? Since when do Catholics blindly follow Scripture when it comes to Church doctrine? You won't find the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption of Mary in Scripture, but no doctrines better exemplify the genius of the Catholic way than those two. When Jesus taught mercy in the 1st century, his followers pushed the culture ahead of where it was at that time. The Church must ALWAYS change and adapt to the changing world around it so as to stay ahead of the curve regarding what it means to be a follower of Christ. Father Martin is following Jesus by looking at LGBT people and relationships through the lens of the Gospel. He is doing the Catholic thing that makes the Development of Doctrine a feature, not a bug, of the Catholic Church. The future of the Church requires that the Gospel be poured fresh into the flexible wine skins of each new generation or it will cease to be Good News. Father Martin was invited by the Vatican to speak at the World Meeting of Families. Calling him a heretical makes YOU A HERETICAL!

@@mcmemmo First I'd like to point out that you don't know Eileen D and you are making unfounded accusations against her. Second I'd like to respond to your statement "The Church must ALWAYS change and adapt to the changing world around it." This is exactly what the Church does not do. It does not follow the world, it leads the world. The Truth does not change as the world moves away from it. The Truth is the Standard by which the world is measured. We might have to learn new ways to address the world, but it is not by changing the Truth. Regarding your statement "to stay ahead of the curve regarding what it means to be a follower of Christ," What specifically are you saying? Can you give a concrete example? To be a follower of Christ is to obey His commandments, out of love for Him. His commandments will never be amended to "stay ahead of the curve" of societal norms. He said he did not come to change a letter of the law. Check out that law. Read the chapter on sexual purity in Leviticus. Our culture idolizes sex. Do we need to get ahead of that curve? At Fatima, Mary told Sr. Lucia that more people go to hell for sins of the flesh. Our efforts should be to encourage purity, not make allowances for impurity out of some misplaced charity. The phrase of not pouring new wine into old wine-skins was a reference to the fact that Jesus was not trying to patch up Judaism. His teaching would not fit withing the limits of Mosaic Law. His remarks were in response to a question about fasting. Your use of the phrase is totally an invention and has nothing to do with what Jesus was talking about. Finally, Fr. Martins invitation to speak at the World Meeting of Families does not in any way confer Sainthood on him.

I really enjoyed your level headed commentary Brian. I was really surprised to learn recently, that only approximately 2% of the human population is homosexual. With the frequency that homosexual lifestyles are portrayed in the media, I guess I just assumed it was higher than that. The society around us is pushing an agenda to normalize and celebrate a lifestyle that is contrary to God’s standards. It shouldn’t be surprising, really. For those 2% that are homosexual, I feel for them. I hate that their whole being is minimized to just a sexual orientation. They are people. I don’t know about you, but my sexuality is a small part of who I am, and I can only imagine it is the same for them. Our modern society is so sex obsessed that it reduces people down to identification by who we prefer to have sex with. Sex is for procreation and union in marriage, marriage is for raising families. That is why the Catechism is so beautiful, it’s very clear cut. I think Priests like Father Martin should be careful in their expression of acceptance of the world’s version of a homosexual lifestyle, because it’s a “give an inch take a mile” thing. The church should always accept all people, but it should never go easy on sin. Jesus didn’t. Also, it is important for Catholics to differentiate between actual homosexuality and the worlds perversion of it. Being homosexual doesn’t mean that you automatically need to dance naked in a gay pride parade. That’s the worlds way of perverting those people down to simply a sexualized ideal. And we shouldn’t stand for it or confuse the two.

I must have been influenced by media content, as I, too, was shocked. Such a small percentage drive the agenda!

Thank you for understanding that not all people of a group are the same. The issue of LBTQ+ Catholics is availability of the sacraments (particularly marriage) for two people who love one another and want to establish a christian home together. Thus, theologians rightly discuss this new cultural understanding, unknown to our ancestors.

I agree that a person's sexuality is not their identity, any more than the shape of their nose doesn't make who they are. But I disagree that homosexual couples cannot raise a family. Biologically, they can't. But through adoption, yes. And there are so many children born out of pre-marital sex and left at foster homes, and faces difficulty for adoption because "they're not right". Allowing gay couples to marry and adopt increases chances for foster kids to have better growing environment and gives them equal footing to face society later on. I don't agree with people who say gays have a specific "lifestyle". I think it's more of a skewed perception by the media.
@2righthands816
@2righthands816 4 жыл бұрын
@@cabbage2794 It would have some merit if the whole premise was not flawed. The problem of adoption is not the fact that there aren't enough straight couples. In most (if not all) Western countries couples have to wait very long time for the process to go through. It's mainly caused by legal issues and/or beaurocracy. Gay couples are just a tiny, tiny portion of all the couples who want to adopt so it makes very little sense to turn the whole system upside down just so it can make LGBTQ "community" feel good.

And then use that position to comfort themselves as they draw their circle to exclude others because they are “sinners”. It makes for a small-minded church, clutching with fear to the precepts and catechism. Such were the times of Jesus Christ who often rebuked the laws and posturing of the contemporary Jewish leaders for their self-righteousness and chastised them for what we today call pharasiacal posturing. I for one don’t have the confidence to hide behind the walls of an institution that has been so terribly wrong so many times before in human history and claim to hold “the truth”. Micha 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Yeah, good luck with any of that sort of action under our current pope, who was handpicked by the problem leaders, to further the worldly goals of the problem leaders.

Right on. I have watched Father Martin and listened to his words. I am put to mind a quote from Talleyrand. “The purpose of language, he said, is to conceal thought.” This is how many modernists survived Pius X’s purge of the priesthood,. Martin claims to preach the gospel in new language. He claims to preache new doctrine in a way that seems to be the old doctrine cast in new terms but is in fact contradictory to it. This was the approach of Rahner. I took Rahnet at his word but in the end I concluded that he lead us in a different direction. Martin is more obvious.

I liked everything except the advice to start a new Church, but the call to repentance at the end was much more in line with Jesus Christ. He never told a person to start a competing church, but He did say repent, so well done.

Brian, I really valued the patient way you articulated this topic. One thing I was thinking about a great deal while watching this video was your reference to Pope Pius X’s (do I have the right Pope you mentioned?) belief that clerics who undermine the Church’s teachings from within are preeminently “pernicious” as far as “enemies” of the Church go. I was also thinking a great deal about your comment on “personal interpretations” of Jesus, and your comment about “different factions trying to persuade” people in the Church, which, as you argue, has resulted in Catholics having to work through and around “smoke and mirrors” to comprehend and obey Church teaching. I think these considerations refer us back to the Second Vatican Council, whose documents and whose legacy encourage greater individual agency (with specific reference to the laity) within, and academic exploration of, the Church. The laity (myself included as an undergraduate Catholic Studies Major) have more access to academic arenas in which they can critically study the Church. More generally, what the laity think and what they can contribute to the Church matters more to the Church now, arguably. So I wonder: How might you characterize the Second Vatican Council’s sociological impact on Catholics’ understanding of authority and Truth? I ask this question because I think there’s a connection between your comments in this video, the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and these intrinsically Christian and particularly Catholic ideas about authority and Truth; but it’s a connection I need to think through for some time to truly comprehend in all its particulars, and I wonder what you have to say about it.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I do think it is crucial that we ask questions and be able to question any authority. Any church will have big problems when people feel like they cannot question certain doctrines or traditions. Religious cults require unquestioning obedience. I think Father Martin would agree that all are included in the love of God! For me, the big truth is that God loves all of His Creation, no exceptions. Thanks!

Brian, your explanations are so easily understood. As you said, Jesus reached out to the marginalized, but He doesn't say "we want you, but you can still live truth as you see it." He says "I am the Way, the Truth, the Life. Come, follow Me."

As Catholics we shouldn't even try to bend down to use their language. Don't refer to them as "LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ+++" The Catechism states that we should call it homosexuality. We do not sugar coat sin in the same way we should not sugar coat people sinning in co-habitation. It only hurts the sinner. This comes from a former co-habitator BTW. I am beginning to believe that Mr Martin is a homosexual also. It saddens me how many of the sheep he is pushing off the cliff.

He was mocking people who identify themselves with those letters, LGBTQ+. It's OK, Jesus was taunted. Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was taunted. It's an old story, going on since the woman and man ate the fruit of the tree.

@@splashpont who do you think is mocking them? I don't think anyone is, but this is the problem with all of these "pronouns" it is so easy to misinterpret if you goof up. We all need to just stick to the term homosexual. 1 bug umbrella, because honestly it doesn't matter, no body cares, most people are not going out of their way to discriminate, but it also shouldn't be pushed on us, when we don't want to enable people in their sin and are trying our best to live a life inviting God and guiding our children to the same route.
