i love diavolo. i tend to find that when people discuss him, they kind of forget that he had a massive presence throughout the part from the get-go. diavolo didn't just like start existing during the colosseum arc, his existence, his presence, was there the whole time. the idea of the mafia leader that keeps his identity completely hidden is terrifying, and the way he almost compulsively and aggressively tries to hide any and all evidence of who he is is deeply compelling. i would agree with the idea that diavolo is a weaker antagonist if you only looked at his time in the colosseum, but i think that's some extreme cherry-picking.

@HoopsnakeАй бұрын
People here have mentioned autism as an explanation for Jotaro's behavior, but there's one element I think that doesn't come up nearly enough. Jotaro is a 17 year old kid with a mostly absent dad, who himself becomes a mostly absent dad. He clearly has a lot of anger issues stemming from this, which means that his growing relationship with his grandfather is a really nice touch across the story. Stands are the expression of someone's soul. Jotaro is stoic, but his stand is furiously aggressive. It's clear he's bottling a lot up. And then try to unpack the fact that he ends up unleashing all that anger on a body that is literally his direct ancestor.
@mjm3091Ай бұрын
9:15 Pink also stands outs against all the other JoJos. We had Jotaro and Josuke back to back with blueish black of male school uniforms (with Jotaro having some other undertones). My Hot Take is that the Ending of Part 6 is Perfect, because it completely pinpoints the entire reason why the Jostars are so good. It’s always about saving others. The main JoJo in every single part has saved a child. And in the end, Jolyne sacrifices herself to save Emporio, which ties this theme from the very beginning of part 1 all the way through until now. Even if they can save just one person, the Jostar bloodline will always fight like hell to. It’s a really beautiful and powerful theme and the Ending just highlights this for the story entirely.

Hot take: Giornos “lack of character development” isn’t only false but it’s also what makes the story work. While giorno doesn’t exhibit much change personality wise you can see that his relationship with team buccarati is different from the start to the finish. At the beginning giorno was the odd one out and you can clearly tell the group treats him like an outsider until he earns their trust. You can also see how at the beginning giorno didn’t knew a lot of things about his own ability and we see how he slowly masters gold experience throughout the story. Last but not least a big part of Giorno is how he shines a light that moves his teammates foward as they have resigned to their fates and it isn’t until giorno pushes everyone foward that they grew and ultimately achieve a greater purpose by stopping diabolo

@leithaziz2716Ай бұрын
I think the confusion stems from the fact that JoJo is a niche doesn't fit into a clear genre since every part is so distinctly different. And then there's just stylistic choices, like the ever changing color palletes depending on the mood, or time stopping everytime a character exposites what's happening (hello Speedwagon). Hot Take: Diavolo is one of, if not the best villain in JoJo For one, I think his character design is perfect and is kind of a microcosm of what JoJo is all about. It's weird, colourful and flamboyant, and Diavolo's design fits this perfectly. The fact that a man with long, pink polka-dotted hair, purple lipstick, a revealing feminine lace shirt and purple studded pants still manages to be one of the coolest and most intimidating villains is exactly what I'd expect from JoJo Making Diavolo split personalities with Doppio was a genius decision. For one, it suits the 'devil' theme that Diavolo is going for. Seeing this normal looking kid suddenly gain piercing green eyes, a much deeper and softer voice and gain a level of physical strength that seemingly doesn't match his physique really sells the idea that Doppio is being possessed by a demon. It also lets us feel Diavolo's presence without him having to be there. The whole point of part 5 was uncovering the identity of Diavolo and where he is, so Diavolo was kinda forced to have the least amount of screentime for a JoJo villain. Yet because of Doppio every scene with him after Risotto gains an extra layer of fear since we know he could snap at any moment. He also has IMMENSE thematic relevancy not just to Part 5, but to JoJo as a whole. Every JoJo villain has had the idea of securing or running away from their date, but Diavolo was the first villain who was OBSESSED with fate. His very existence is a blessed impossibility, he grew up with people who loved him, discovered the stand arrows, gained an immensly powerful stand and became the boss. His stand literally lets him pick and choose what his fate is. Furthermore he also doesn't trust anyone but himself (and Doppio ig) and doesn't allow anyone near him under any circumstance. All of this is a direct opposite to Giorno and the gang. They were all dealt pretty bad hands in life, yet their resolve and love for each other pushed them upwards. Whilst I'm in the camp that Diavolo didn't deserve his fate, it is a thematically satisfying one. The man who always chose his fate, now is forced to meet his fate whether he wants to or not, over and over and over. It also ties back to the religious symbolism. The son of God (DIO) defeats the devil and he faces eternal punishment as a result

My all time favourite episode of JoJo's is "Let's go eat some Italian food", the one with Tonio Trussardi. It ties in a lot of elements of body horror, especially with the way Okuyasu's body reacts to Tonio's food, and the constant back and forth between "Is Tonio good?" and "Is Tonio bad?" is masterful storytelling. Sure, it plays literally no role in the general story of part 4, but it's still a really good episode, and underrated as hell in my opinion. To skip an episode like that, or the episodes with Mikitaka, Shizuka, Bug-Eaten, sure it won't impact that story, but they're fun episodes to watch, to help grow the characters further and showcase them a lot more as the grow as stand users

Bro I was just talking to a friend about this a few days ago, Keicho died way too fast and he's such an interesting character, I like Akira Otoishi, he's fun, but Keicho had so much going on with him, his morals, his relationship with his father and Okuyasu 😔🙏 the Nijimuras, apart from Jotaro and Joseph obviously, are also the only ones in the DIU cast (as far as I remember, sorry) with some connection to Dio because of their father, c'mon. To be honest I just have a some beef with Araki for paying more attention to Koichi and Rohan and leaving Okuyasu aside because when you think about it my boy had SO MUCH to explore about him and his whole family.

On the topic of removing half of part 4 - I actually love that the first half is lighthearted/not overly serious, especially after how serious part 3 was for the entire run. Having episodes like Tonio, Rohan, and Mikitaka do a good job showing that this quiet little town just has some weird stuff hiding in it until we get to Kira and we see how dark a place like this can get.

Hot Take: There is no strongest JoJo character. I personally believe that it's a four way tie with Giorno with requiem, Johnny with Act 4, Tooru, and Gappy with Go Beyond. Each character can counter another and it's a difficult choice for who you would consider strongest.
@kirbyofthestarsfanАй бұрын
3:46 Counterpoint: The Anime's episodes are only about 22 minutes long, meanwhile the OVA's episodes are 30 minutes themselves, which means the OVA had an advantage over it with those extra 8-10 minutes the TV show can't afford. And if we're being serious, it's only about 10 minutes of extra fight that the anime added. Personally I'm a big fan of D'Arby being given two episodes worth of action in the anime, he always felt like one of the more dangerous threats and it was unique giving so much screentime (while other 2 parters in Egypt, not so much).

I've absolutely gotta drop my thoughts on Dragon's Dream while the video's fresh. I like most of the fights before and after it, so I'm not a total hater. Dragon's Dream is one of the very, very few jojo fights I outright dislike. The concept of the feng shui attack is fine, but I could never enjoy the execution. The whole fight feels completely one sided, and Kenzou's ability always amounts to 'you lose'. As soon as he orients himself properly, he is never going to lose this fight. It reminds me of king crimson and how GER is nearly hand crafted to beat it, because it can counter nearly every ability in jojo, and nearly any ability conceivable. Kenzou had a near invincible ability. Maybe if it had some drawback, like needing to charge up, or leaning more into the idea of the dragon keeping the fight equal, just something. As soon as this man points his feet in some direction, you lose. How is he beaten? He stands wrong by accident. As far as I'm concerned, Kenzou could've stood completely still that entire fight, a gun would've dropped into his hands after enough lucky time passed, and he could shoot the group dead with his eyes closed. It's especially unfortunate because it could've been a great fight for FF, taking full advantage of her biology and abilities. She could've split herself into multiple bodies again, or taken over more live hosts, overwhelming Kenzou and throwing off his feng shui since he'd have to reorient constantly. Unfortunately, we're left with a compilation of FF getting absolutely dunked on until Anasui steps in and makes sure Kenzou doesn't end the entire series. I really hope this is coherent, because it's probably one the fights I feel strongest about, despite my disliking. Also if you touch the dragon orb your arms turn into heat seeking missiles, 10/10
@filipemartinho1753Ай бұрын
The only part I like is the stand itself. The bickering with Kenzou is funny, and thematically, having the dragon try to even the playing field I think fits the whole martial arts thing. Other than that, not only are the abilities very ??? FF's solution of magic water mirror is also ?????? It's all very confusing. I know, I know, it's jojo, it's made to be weird, but I genuinely struggled in understanding what exactly the stand was, and how to go around it, since it really feels like a playground fight between two kids who change the rules to not lose
@stinkle4822Ай бұрын
@@mrfact03s Kenzou definitely isn't super concentrated, considering his own stand is constantly pissing him off, and he couldn't notice his own legs getting shattered for a minute. Even if he has to love around to take full advantage of feng shui, it still makes him effectively invulnerable. The fight in concept is fine, but the execution doesn't work for me. Jumpin Jack Flash is another fight I'm not super into, but I can appreciate the wacky jojo stuff like the vapour suits and exploding rats. Kenzou's fight doesn't have any of that zest, and it amounts to his ability just feeling like if he walks around he wins

Hot take: I personally believe that part 6 is the best written of the parts, and Pucci is actually my favorite JoFoe. My 3 favorite stands are from that part, and the other stands were very unique and likeable. The cast was great, my only gripe being Ermes(not a bad character, just not my favorite). Part 6 had a really deep feel to it, more so than the other parts, imo. Heavy Weather was an incredible arc that really made me feel for Pucci and Weather, while challenging my sense of morality. Pucci was very philosophical, and had some great quotes I love, while also having a cool design and stands. The ending was sad, but a great conclusion to the old universe. Jolyne was the 2nd JoJo to die in her own part, with the only other being Jonathan, which I feel brought it full circle. A character who wasn’t the mc being the one to defeat Pucci was also unique, and executed extremely well. Then the end with Emporio meeting his deceased friends again, as reincarnated people free of burden was really touching. I could probably go on, but parts 3 and 6, are my personal favorites, for very different reasons. Edit: Stone Ocean is the only part I watched, in addition to reading about 90-95% of the manga, so I may like it more having digested it twice, as opposed to only watching the first 5 part’s anime. I also haven’t finished SBR, I’m on Catch the Rainbow, and as much as I do like it, I take a long time to read manga, due to me spending too long admiring Araki’s art.

Based on the layout provided, only one prisoner could have thrown their crap (the one directly across from her). hot take on Part 5: The story being a back-to-back fight gauntlet hurts the themes and the characters more than it helps them. To me the most generous reading of VA is about sacrifice being necessary for the complex, seemingly inscrutable and set in stone Present State of Things to change. However, the most prevalent, or basically the only way of showing sacrifice outside of a couple arcs is through wild suicidal gambits in fights - and at some point it stops registering as a tough choice a character makes through their 'resolve', instead reading as just a regular beat, "this is what this story does for its 3rd act break of a fight, someone dramatically mutilates themselves". For the secondary characters this decision is at least usually tied with some kind of personal conflict (wanting respect, superstition, loyalty and trust, etc), but for Giorno it's just A Move He Does that happens to represent how hard he wants things. I think that's why Bruno generally sticks more with ppl as a character than Giorno - because most of the crucial decisions in the story that AREN'T defined by the arc of a shonen fight, are left up to him and his struggle with the fate he's given as a capo (keeping secrets, not giving up that he's dying, switching from "reform" to "revolt", as he enlists his family into a suicidal mission, even though this goes against everything he's tried to prevent from happening), while Giorno (except the beginning, a couple quieter scenes, and, like, white album/king crimson), despite some subtle traits, is kind of just left as a mechanical plot function that repeats the same thematic beat in the same fight structure, while insisting that it's actually awe inspiring or smth. imo if VA was more of a proper mafia politics story, or at least made Giorno have to trudge through more choices that weren't "give up or beautifully gore myself" and showcase more of his cunning/ruthlessness/leadership outside of fight strategy, I think both its themes and protagonist would've resonated better, even if Giorno still showed no hesitation. ig TJL is here to rectify that 0_0

my own personal gripe with the dragon's dream fight is that in the manga positioning is so important to the fight for obvious reasons, but between the way the location is set up and cutting to other characters to get the ability explained it ends up losing all sense of direction for me and just feels like things are happening out of nowhere. however, this becomes much clearer in the anime
@swinepasteАй бұрын
Speedwagon is also vital to the series plot for another reason: He's completely disconnected from the Joestar bloodline, and very explicitly never has kids of his own either, but he still has an important legacy stretching throughout the entire continuity. In a series that concerns itself with bloodlines so much, it's good to have a counterbalance, a character who shows that having that kind of legacy is possible even without blood. Araki could have theoretically used Shizuka in a similar way if she had been made into a proper JoJo at some point, which is a sadly missed opportunity. Not to mention that he's an obvious foil to Dio, as a character who also comes from awful circumstances but is able to overcome them and be a virtuous person when the opportunity presents itself.

6:28 I think there's just ALOT of hate for filler/non-essential story bits nowadays. People seem to have gotten themselves accustomed to rushing through a series instead of taking their time to enjoy and become immersed in the world, characters, and story. I understand that filler can be annoying at times but other times I see it as us the viewers being given more time with the characters and the world around them. It depends on how it's done. Filler can be bad but at the same time I think the problem can also stem from the viewer having a lack of interest and passion for a series. I think people have become very impatient with stories now, even with cases like this where it's not even filler, just moments from part 4 that aren't HUGE that involve something like an important character dying every few seconds or something.

Donatello Versus is not only the best son of Dio in part 6, but also the best and most interesting side antagonist. Him and his stand are incredibly underrated and have insane potential. He betrays Pucci, and becomes one of the only characters to attempt to achieve heaven. Donatello is also the reason that Weather was able to get his memories back and activate Heavy Weather. His stand is also criminally underrated, as Underworld has some of the most potential in the entire series, literally being able to dig massive caverns in minutes, and summon past events instantaneously. He is incredibly powerful and interesting, but for some reason him and his stand stay the most underrated in the franchise.

My hot take is that Tooru from Jojolion is actually a really good villain, and he's just considered worse than the others because the conflict from Jojolion isn't entirely centered around stopping the Rock Humans. Araki really wanted to play with the Rock Humans' lack of humanity and their parasitic nature and Tooru is the ultimate expression of that theme.
@filipemartinho1753Ай бұрын
I just liked Wonder of U as a villain more. A stand villain is not only really badass, but also really speaks to themes in Jojolion, Stands as curses and blessings. Just like Milagro man and Les Feuilles, Wonder of U could have simply been Calamity incarnate and not a stand in relative control of calamity. Tooru really lacks in villainess I guess... he doesnt have as many memorable lines or moments, and is kind of pathetic. The only really cool part of Tooru was his demise ironically. But he's also pretty over hated, I do see why someone would like him

The manga for that was rough (especially when you read the physical black and white books) but the anime made it so much more entertaining
@EmmariscobarАй бұрын
Yeah, I think they definitively could have explained that part of DD way better. As far as I can tell, I think the way it works is that touching the Dragon automatically "redeems" (so to speak) all your good/bad luck at once by using your floating limbs to micromanage everything that's about to happen. Facing a bad direction at that moment caused you to get WOU'd for a few moments. Facing a safe direction at that moment causes that same thing to happen to your enemy instead.
@LEONOX233Ай бұрын
@Emmariscobar That's wrong, Dragon's Dream follows the concept of Feng shui, which says that there is a flow of positive and negative energy that shapes the natural universe (Feng shui literally translates to "wind-water"), so if one can predict and visualize the directions of these flows, they could use this knowledge to have extreme good luck or to lessen the effects of the negative flow, as Annasui explains, if Feng shui affects the universe on such a large scale, it can also apply to individuals and their bodies. Dragon's Dream takes this concept to its extreme conclusion; the compass in Kenzo's hand shows his "lucky" direction, so as long as he follows it, he's immune to direct damage, while the orb shows his opponent's "unlucky" direction, so if someone touches it, the orb forces them to follow that direction, creating an event of extreme misfortune.

Another Hamon Beat banger! Since none of my takes were included, I suppose there's no harm in me trying again, lol. From what I've seen online, a lot of people who start with the anime find the transition to reading the manga difficult, and usually cite something along the lines of "the powers are too complex" or that "there's so much going-on in the panels that it's hard to tell what's happening". I'm not going to dismiss those claims, as I have the same problem with most western superhero comics, but I find Araki's art and paneling are so well-drawn that it's actually very easy for me to tell what's going-on. In-fact, JoJolion has by-far my favorite Stand battles in the series, despite the absence of movement or sound. Probably my hottest-take: the Stone Ocean batch-releases were better than the previous seasons' weekly releases. As someone who watches dub, the wait between part 4 and part 5's dubs (I started watching JoJo in mid-2019 and caught-up just after DiU's dub finished airing) was downright painful. All the while, I was getting spoilers left, right and center from everyone watching the sub as it aired. There's also the fact that I prefer binge-watching over weekly watching, but even I will admit that that's entirely subjective. The main points I hear against the batch-release formula are that "the time between batches was too long" (which I will say I agree with) and that the batch-release "killed the hype". Personally, though, I don't care about community hype whatsoever. I'm perfectly fine to enjoy JoJo's in private from the comfort of my own home, and I honestly think Netflix were right to assume most fans would feel the same way. (JOJOLION SPOILERS BELOW!) I see a lot of complaints that JoJolion gets "stale" due to most of the fights being against long-range automatic Stands. And maybe I'm biased, but those have always been my favorite type of Stand battles, so I didn't mind the abundance of them whatsoever. On the topic of JoJolion, I always see everyone saying "the main villain sucks" and that "he's the worst part of JoJolion". And while I do agree that Toru is less developed than other JoJo big-bads (not that I dislike him, however), I would hesitate to call Toru the part's "main" villain. Jobin is a more active threat for a much longer span of the series. The way I see it, he's the main-villain (and is one of the best JJBA main-villains when viewed through that lens) and Toru is more of the "man behind the man" trope.

Hot Take: Weather Report is underutilized in Stone Ocean. I'm specifically talking about the person, not the stand or stand's abilities. Weather Report, in spite of his direct ties to Pucci and role as a main character, does not appear all that much. He has very little interactions with the rest of the cast. For example, outside of that throwaway panel of the cast looking at Foo Fighter's toes, FF has no scenes with Weather Report, as the one she sees during the fight with Pucci turns out to just be one of Pucci's illusions. The same can be said for Ermes, especially in the anime where I don't think she shares a single scene with Weather Report until his death, which makes her reaction to said death feel hollow. As a whole, I feel this main group of characters is very lacking in that sense of camaraderie I get from other parts, and Weather Report is the biggest reason why. The other thing I wanted to say regarding Weather Report is his personality shift after getting back his memory disc. I get he went through a lot of trauma and had become immensely bitter as a result, but why does he go around attacking innocent people. The scene of him shocking the two girls was particularly bizarre, and not in a good way. Honestly, I'm glad the anime removed that scene because it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. I remember the flashbacks with Perla establishing him as an upstanding guy, but now he's hitting on random women and using his stand to force them in giving him a massage? I get wanting to go after the racist detective and Pucci, but everything else felt out of character.

I get that his stand was ultimately instrumental to Pucci's defeat, and that's a good story beat, but I wish he himself had more screentime.

Thanks for doing another episode! Love hearing you talk about JoJo. And you immediately gave me new appreciation for Speedwagon!

Hot take: Jolyne and Josuke are the best JoJo's since they don't get a bs power up and use a more creative fighting style based on their abilities like Josukes homing bullets or Jolyne making a net so she could save Ermes and wouldn't be trapped by Foo Fighters
@fujiwaranonekobiodrando1257Ай бұрын
Jolyne lost the fight and Josuke didn't kill or defeat the villain with his own hand
@zumberburg6527Ай бұрын
@@fujiwaranonekobiodrando1257 What does that have to do with the comment? Just because a character doesn't beat the villain doesn't mean they are less interesting or creative.
@fujiwaranonekobiodrando1257Ай бұрын
@@zumberburg6527 That's the results that they didn't receive powerups. The powerups are solely used to end the villain's life, Jotaro juse gains timestop last second just to finish Dio off, Giorno and Diavolo were straight up fighting over *the powerup* tool The relation my comment had to do with the original one is the "bs powerups"

Yeah i agree, Stone Free is my favorite stand in the series for that reason

Hot Take: DIO getting a Stand was his own undoing
@MadderMaDDogАй бұрын
My Hot take is that Jouske should have defeated Kira instead of Jotaro. I understand that Jouske was hurt and couldn’t get to Kira. And Kira was about to use Bites the Dust again. I felt robed of that fact since the other protagonist got to defeat their main villain except for jolyne but at least Emporio was a part original character but still.
@nezeundАй бұрын
Imo kira is not a "josuke antagonist" but a "morioh antagonist". The entire gang cornering kira instead of josuke was really fitting

Thanks for the last explanation, it was very enlightening. Always love watching your videos, since I believe you are one of the few who does his research and states his sources concerning JoJo, and it helps being closer to the way Araki thinks when I make my own JoJo OC contents (for myself and my friends).

Here's my hot take Diavolo is a character with most wasted potential (and thats why i consider him worst main villain) Araki gave us the whole explanation, how a person with a split personality have 2 souls in 1 body, and both Diavolo and Doppio are different individual souls. Also, we know that a stand power is a "reflection" of its users soul, so technically, a human with 2 personalities have 2 souls, and therefore can have 2 stands. I dont think that its possible to use both stands at the same time, but still - one human with 2 full-fledged stands is something we haven't seen in jojo (i dont count stands that can change their users like Anubis, Superfly or Cheap Trick, because these stand abilities are tied in concept of changing users) Remember how Araki build up the secret of The World in part 3, when Kakyoin died just to figure out what kind of stand power Dio had? Imagine now how Diavolo could have 2 stand powers that synergize with each other, making an absurdly overpower stand combo, and part 5 gang would be like "There is no way one stand is capable of doing it, there must be something else..." But instead we got Doppio, who doesnt have a stand, and barely knows about stands in general (btw Epitaph is a sub-stand of King Crimson, its not Doppios stand)
@randomsmashplays3564Ай бұрын
the issue with this idea of the two of them having distinct stands that they can synergize with is that it breaks the idea of doppio being unaware that he's the boss, which is an EXTREMELY critical part of the character. doppio doesn't work if he thinks he's that important, his entire character rides on thinking of himself as a trusted messenger. and also, while yes epitaph is part of king crimson, it's still pretty clearly implied that diavolo having two abilities is a narrative mirror of him having two souls. if you wanted "two stands that synergize," congrats, you got it, epitaph compliments king crimson's main ability extremely well.

Torus way more wasted imo, he could be top 5 if he was foreshadowed instead of just “being the leader”
@Tolubakare04Ай бұрын
Not really a hot take, I definitely agree to this. Either him or tooru is the worse imo
@boinqity4621Ай бұрын
i was so disappointed when i learned that last bit. the idea of someone with multiple personalities having a different stand that fits each could be so cool. idk if i would call him "the worst" mainly because i like every jojo villain, but i agree that there was definitely wasted potential
@MrShifty1Ай бұрын
I honestly think it would have been kind of lame for Doppio to have his own stand. Imo his scenes are interesting because he is a ticking time bomb, not a threat by himself, but at any moment Diavolo could take over and everyone around him is basically fucked.

Hot take: Jotato is easily the worst part of part 3, because 8 times out of 10 he solves his problems by punching the hell out of things or being a complete sociopath. He sucks up all the charisma of every scene he is in.

Hot Take: the Part 3 flashbacks in the anime adaptations of Parts 5 and 6 should have been animated with the Part 3 anime art style with the different art styles telling us that it’s in the past

Hot Take: Heavy Weather would have been more interesting if it wasn't just people turning into snails and maybe had more individual transformations. The snails feel like a unfortunate joke that got old fast personally. Love the vids!
