Watched this a year after release. Always enjoy your analyses. I do want to point out that Mark, Amber, and Co. are Teenagers and they have some maturing to do before they may be able to look at Amber's actions and go "that's actually pretty toxic". I'm not gonna lie, at that age I would have had difficulty doing so, and it took a lot of maturing and tough learning to learn that. A good portion of that was environment. So yeah, while I agree that Amber is a bad character, I don't think that she can be written off as poorly written YET. Not sure if you'll ever read this lumo, but if you do, I'd like to know your thoughts.

I read you loud and clear. My only contention would be that Amber is portrayed as exceptionally mature and virtuous the rest of the time - working at a soup kitchen, building schools for the underprivileged, standing up to bullies and embracing social justice. All of these aspects of her character are shortcuts the writers took to get us to respect and admire her without actually putting in the work. So while I understand that those characters are teenagers and have some maturing to do I believe it's dishonest to explain Amber's being such a paragon of wisdom and virtue half of the time and an unbridled narcissistic brat the rest of the time with, "She's still figuring things out." You're right. She is a teenager; but I don't think the text actually treats her as though she is.

Amber as a character in the comics had such a good role as part of Mark's overall character arc. In the comic Amber thinks Mark is a drug dealer because he has a beeper and is constantly running away. After the college incident she expresses her justified anger and Mark admits that he is a superhero. This refreshes their relationship a little bit because now he has a good excuse for why he's been so flakey but ultimately it doesn't change anything for Amber. Mark is still not around and despite the fact that he has a good reason that still leaves Amber alone so Amber and Mark finally break up on good terms. Amber is not a main character. She is almost completely gone after their relationship ends. She should just disappear now. Forever.

Not that this has any relevance, (nor to sound racist) but she was also white, Which makes me think that when the writers turned her black they thought they might have improved her in some way, but obviously didn't do anything. So what was the point of that?

@@idrinkrawmilk554 by improve her you of course mean make her embody the current cultures idea of the "strong female character". Unfortunately this just makes her unlikable. I also like that it is stated by Mark in the comic that the main reasons he got with Amber in the first place was just because she was gorgeous and liked him first. He then has to grow as a human being and become more emotionally substantive. All this progress is removed by making the Amber character and average looking wokester.

I think the Amber situation was caused by the writers deciding last minute to do the "Amber knew all along" twist. I don't think it was set up at all, I believe they were going along with the story with the understanding that she didn't know. Hence why she freaked out when Mark flaked on her during a robot attack buy for whatever reason changed their minds last second to Amber knowing all along.

If they had removed Amber's "I've known for weeks" line, that in itself would've been a huge step up. Yeah, they still break up, cause finding out he's Invincible *still* means he's been lying to her multiple times, but she could have apologized for calling Mark a coward, since no, he didn't just run off and leave them to the murder-cyborgs. This still would have accomplished the break, but without making Amber into the bad guy here. Her knowing creates the problem in the narrative. If she didn't know, then it makes perfect sense she's upset about Mark running off, because she didn't have the context of him running off. It makes sense that she's resentful, because as far as she knows, Mark's been flaking off on her since they got together in the first place, only to then have Mark run off and leave her for dead. Anyone would be understandably pissed off about that, and the revelation, instead of getting Mark out of the trouble, only hurts Amber because she now realizes he's been lying to her, which again, is absolutely understandable, especially for a high schooler.

I’m so disappointed by the ruining of Amber’s character in this show. In the comics she is such a good person to Mark. I hope they just cast tv Amber to the wayside soon and have Eve get with him already like in the comics. Also, I enjoyed Seth Rogen’s portrayal of Allen but with seeing how much involvement Allen has in the overall story from the comics, I feel a bit concerned with having Seth Rogen doing his voice. However, I do feel hopeful and think it was a good choice nonetheless.

The awful logic of her character reminded me of the wife (ex) in "Crazy Stupid Love" who cheated on her husband, served him with divorce papers and BLAMED HIM for her cheating and divorce - only to get angry at him for dating and moving on. And Hollywood still tried hard to position the guy as the monster. That's Hollywood! They made Amber a narcissist - and a dangerous one that would value her validation over lives.

The part about what you said you would do is something I also agree with. Mark is a hero who saves people's lives as best as he can, countless people will be saved by him whereas his time with Amber could possibly be interrupted. I in fact would've been fine with Mark having "Lied" to me because I am not equal to the countless people he would go on to save.

Completely agree with you, but I think while you pointed out all angles in "you lied to me about the secret I already know" situation, most frustrating for me was her behavior on the Uni camp, where she was going ham about how she left her in danger and isn't a real protector\man character. If she already knew, he's Invincible, that makes this fight completely - utterly! - empty, since he was the one who actually saved her. Either you know and acknowledge him helping you or you don't know and go into fit about cowards. Somehow show decided to have both, while it looks like a plot hole.

Went back to watch your "mark did nothing wrong" video and felt the overall premise and criticism of Amber being badly written due to one line screwing up the entire premise of her character build up to that point (along with 98% of your counterpoints) is fairly solid, both there and in this video, better than most critics covering Amber I've watched. My only nit pick gripe (the 2%) really, would particularly be for Eve's criticism of Mark after the whole affair. William's criticism felt like nonsense, but I think Eve's criticism was in direct relation to Mark dragging out the whole deal without saying anything, particularly when she went out of her way to bat for him. I felt (or if you prefer deduced) in her case, her argument against Mark was kept simple because her statement was more of a reactionary response to Mark saying she told her not to say anything, rather than an overall reflection of his character in the relationship. I say this because (and I'm willing to concede that I missed something; it's been a while) from what I understand, that Eve's only knowledge of the situation would be either coming from what Mark told her or what she may have found online, seeing as she has service out where she lives. And from what we get from that conversation between Eve and Mark before she made that response, it did seem that to some extent she was still sympathetic to Mark. My point being, while conceding that it is a nitpick, that I think that generalizing all of the side characters being against Mark for the same reason or even extreme might be pushing it. I think Eve's criticism, while reactionary, can be more reflective of the actual neglectful/naive but aspiring and compassionate part of Mark's character and his role in the relationship, whereas William's criticism was just needlessly antagonistic.

Yeah no. I hated how they had Eve say Mark is at fault in the relationship. Because Eve is a superhero herself and should know what it feels to be having so much power and responsibility, while trying to balance both out. Including being in a relationship. It doesn't make sense for Eve to criticize Mark, when she probably would have been in the same situation if she was dating a non-superhero, instead of Rex. Because Mark telling Amber his secret identity, is the equivalent to sharing his credit card number with her, especially when their relationship has been only SIX MONTHS.
@SteelTalons1
@SteelTalons1 2 жыл бұрын
@@osmanyousif7849 I will concede that i forgot to factor her own relationship with Rex to account. I still stand that it wouldn't have hurt the writing for Eve to say what she said to Mark even if she was being irrational. However, the fact that the show doesn't address her faults with her relationship in that same manner as it does with Mark is suspect and should be factor in much the same way as Amber being a hypocrite. I will grant the notion that given how well the characters are written (for the most part) in season 1, that the writers were being careless with the romance element of the story rather than malicious. Again however, that courtesy will go right out the window if the writers don't address the criticism properly. If instead of addressing in any real way how Ambers decisions may have hurt Mark more than it helped or if there's no addressing any faults objectively in regards to Eves relationships (which i still feel wouldn't be that hard); and instead opt to try and post-rationalize both of their decisions as some sort of tired progressive virtue signaling trope in season 2. Then frankly at that point, both Eve and Amber being hypocrites will be the least of my frustrations.

@ 23:19 I know I’m a year late, but your assessment of Amber and Invincible is spot on. I appreciate your evaluation that Mark taking amber back at the end actually diminishes him, he had grown beyond her and she didn’t change at all. She is still demanding he bend to her every whim as though she is the queen of England. Her perspective on the situation is abismal. What makes it worse is Mark has an amazing roll model in his mom as to how he can expect a reasonable, unpowered woman, to respect his responsibilities he has taken on for himself in this hero life. She has demonstrated how to love and live well with someone dramatically different then herself and to love and respect those differences. She doesn’t demand unreasonable actions or have absurd expectations of her time with omniman. She has the opposite. She expects interruptions and cancelations, but undivided and special attention when the emergency has ended.

Okay first time watcher but I don't understand how people are quick to argue with logic behind their bases and fall apart so quickly when a simple questioning of their own ideals would lead them to the same or similar conclusions. What happend to questioning yourself to see if you are right?? And it isn't just a matter of right or wrong, but also of how it makes you and others feel. In other words for those who don't understand I agree with you logic fully.

But I do disagree about her being where the show took a nosedive character wise. For me that was William, imagine getting into relationship issues because you saved your friends and that same friends still tell you that you are the problem.

So I’m not sure if I misunderstood that later part of the wind river segment or not, but if that isn’t the case then I’d have too strongly disagree. While I don’t believe that wind river was trying to say that other races need white saviors to solve their problems, this is still an argument that can be applied validly to pieces of art and media today. I believe the movie was more focused on evil crimes and the far reaching scars and pain it leaves, but I can’t say that the argument mentioned doesn’t have weight to modern pieces of art and cinema, it truly does. I completely disagree that this argument applies to this movie, but to say that no mainstream piece of art or media falls under its umbrella or deserves this allegation is simply wishful thinking. All of that being said, I don’t actually think that’s what you meant, and I either misheard/misunderstood you or you misarticulated, especially because it doesn’t seem to fit your previous reasoning and view on why it doesn’t apply to the movie. Anyways love ur videos

about legalizing s3x workers, I didn't watch your first video on the topic but about what you said on this video: legalizing s3x work is about making things less bad for the workers, with legalization there can be regulation and we can go after pimps which are the real bad guys at this story. Sure it would be better if there weren't the economic need for people to submit themselves to this but for that we would have to establish a new economic system first and that takes time so in the mean time legalization could enhance the quality of life of people who need to go into these works

If you have to stoop to comparing alcoholism to being a literal superhero on the scale of Superman himself, in order to give your argument even the remotest semblance of validity... I'm sorry, but at that point you've already lost the argument by default. Amber is completely self centered, manipulative, uncompassionate, uncaring, ungrateful, unremorseful, and the damn pinnacle of unlikable. There is not a single redeeming trait other than 'i'm doing charity work', but even then she uses it as moral justification for all the other socially reprehensible actions she regularly engages in, so to some degree i would even argue that her doing charity with THAT motivation makes her WORSE, not better. That girl highlights some of the most toxic elements you can find in a relationship; Making you feel worthless, breaking you down to raise herself up, guilt tripping you over her own faults, not investing anything into the relationship other than 'i grant you my presence', having such a staggering degree of entitlement that nothing you do can satisfy her wants nor no amount of justification can make good the lack of attention she thinks you owe her. I've said it before and i'll say it again, make a list of character flaws you avoid, give that list to 20 friends and ask them to do the same, write "Amber" on top of the list, and viola _you've now got her character profile on 1 sheet of paper._ If your relationship looks ANYTHING like Mark's and Amber's, *_L E A V E._* Nothing good will come of that. For your own health, drop that. No matter how deeply ingrained your self devaluation is, they've not earned you. And if there's no prospect of things EVER getting better, evacuate and cut all ties. It'll suck for 3 months, and then you'll realize just how much color the world has, and how much they drained from you.

Invincible S2 can easily introduce a childhood flashback that explains why Amber feels like she needs to compensate for being a know-it-all. I don’t think Amber is poorly-written. Then again, I’m under the impression that Amber lied about knowing Mark is a superhero. Actually, I don’t even think William defending her is poorly-written. He’s not a superhero, so he doesn’t fully understand. Mark even makes this clear. I would say Eve is the ONLY one who makes me tilt my head for defending Amber. She should’ve been supportive of Mark and accused Amber of being selfish. It’s obvious Eve has a crush on Mark too, so she should 100% support him. BUT… Eve was literally just cheated on, so she probably has a bit of a “men are trash” mentality during S1. So as far as I’m concerned, things aren’t poorly-written. The drama is just messy and not in Mark’s favor right now. Which… the point was to make Mark feel isolated at the end of S1, so it’s actually brilliantly written. I love the relationships in Invincible, and I personally think they’re doing a great job. I think us debating whether Amber is good for Mark, or debating whether she did anything wrong, only proves the show is keeping things interesting, and still surprising and contemporizing new aspects into the story. It’s still surprising people like me, who’ve read all the comics. It’s clear Amber isn’t supposed to be likable. It’s clear she’s toxic. I think S2 will touch on that, and I have faith they will.

When it comes to the Mark v Amber discussion. I’m not going to spend time rebasing well made points. Like it or not there is a reference to the character known as Amber in the invisible universe and she is top to bottom better then character assassination that is displayed on screen in the show. The graphic novel proves that this wasn’t as big of conflict because the Red head Amber is was more responsible with her emotional expression then the one from the show. To be charitable, I will state my personal beliefs. I do feel in the heat of what was going on in comics, and mass media that the writers and show runners put themselves in an non winnable environment by swapping the ethnicity of the Amber character. The best expression being, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If the intentions where to craft a better story. I have outlined that there is a Chekhov's gun moment when Mark had the Mars mission and bring Amber a Mars rock. Only for it to never be brought up again. That rock would be the only way her knowing that Mark was invisible. And even if true thats ‘s she found out. It doesn’t excuse Amber being in the middle of a villain arch lol. So the fact that Amber from the show shows non of the traits from her counterpart from the comics proves that the show version of amber could have been a better representation of toxic/ messy first relationship. Side note; The successful show Mark naive nature better through his interaction with criminal muscle known as Titan. As Mark is taken advantage by the villain through good intentions on Marks part. If Amber had been a different character to show Marks views are not only naive with the concept of being a Hero but also with everyday people. Then it would have been a better through line. The important of story over fads

i would like to say something about Wind River. I am not trying to make a statement on either side of the argument, just bridging an understanding on the real world area. I lived the area for a good while and got to know some of the people there. The people on the wind river rez are very very family oriented, not just blood related family either. they try and succeed to treat everyone on the rez as their own. They also harbor an understandable grudge against white people for the treatment of their peoples in history. It is an understandable grudge, but more importantly one they do not let get in the way of trying to build better connections where others wont. They are a strong people, and will approach everyone from outside their land with apprehension. But show them you mean nothing but good will or at least no involvement and they will leave you alone. This toleration and acceptance is something only the strongest of people have.

If u wanna make a badass female character, give her a tragic backstory, character arks, genuine emotions, and a fitting attitude. But these days all they do is add boobs, and make em OP as hell with no explanations. Same on the other end, male characters are either viewed as either the stupid, pretty, or wierd guy. They are only want they should be and never what they can be. There is no room for aggressive expansion only what makes em money. Its sad cuz these sex stereo types are just advertised on TV

I'm blown away by this Illuminaty red pilled people. I'm always willing to accept there's more to a movie than what I can get from it at the moment; but I really liked "Eyes wide shut", and it had nothing to do with it exposing a puppeteering dark sect. What I saw was a commentary on how the institutions that sustain our societies are and always will be under threat of corruption by the eternal depravity that humans are capable of. Kind of like a question: what hope is there for love, marriage, families and other social institutions in a world that is always trying to get away with the satisfaction of it's most animalistic and depraved desires? And, for what I got, there wasn't a clear or optimistic answer at the end, that is why it's such a tough movie to watch. If it's really only about the illuminaty, I can't help to be fairly less interested in it. We live in a sufficiently enough clown world as it is; no need for secret ancient sects to be behind it all.

I gotta say there's one thing i disagree with here. I think that amber has a chance of redemption as long as the writers decide to mark these tantrums as flaws in the eyes of the show. That would ground her character and if she gave a heartfelt apology and actually had some interesting flaws that she admits too like, not being able to admit that she is wrong or being egotistical then we could get characterdevelopment, and an actual character instead of an insufferable result of writers being forced to follow politcal standards

If we actually learn there is a root cause for Ambers behaviour, that won’t change a single thing. Why? Because if she actually faced a traumatic experience centring around the concept of trust, then she should have left Mark when she found out the truth for herself. The only rational reason she’d willingly stay with him after finding out the truth, has to be out of revenge. Staying with him gave her the leverage to continue gaslighting Mark into making him feel like shit, because she knew he wouldn’t be able to explain himself without revealing his secret identity, which is something he clearly doesn’t want to do, for the sake of her own protection. And if you think she wanted to give Mark time to tell her for himself, and when he did it was simply too late, then clearly whatever she *might* have gone through, wasn’t actually that traumatic. Someone with actual trauma centring around trust, would have just left him when she found of the truth. So the fact that she stayed, just so she could dump more stress in his life when she known he’s out there risking his own life to save others, is actually psychotic behaviour. There is no way her actions could ever be redeemed or at the very least understood.
