You do not need to remove anything from the tool in order for the window breaker to work. Simply press the head of the resqme (black cylindrical part) against the window in case of emergency and it will shatter.

The metal ball tip is actually a mechanism that allows the spring-loaded spike to reload so the tool can be used several times! Remember to press the black cylindrical head against tempered glass to break free.

@@dukeduke2790 It's a similar mechanism as an automatic center punch. You're supposed to press down and it gives a quick mechanical shock. I was never very impressed with the center punch which sometimes armed itself, sometimes not. Totally unreliable. I tried the window breaker and it was no better. I wouldn't bother with it if I were you. My wife found a hammer style multi tool that also is an aid getting in and out of the car, a small flashlight and a seatbelt cutter. I have a LOT more faith in that one.
