I'm always interested to find old menus. It's always interesting to see what people were eating "back in the day" as well as prices for different items. What sometimes is considered an expensive special item now may have been a commonplace thing back then. Venison is one thing that jumps to mind at the moment. Sort of special now, common back then. Oh well great video of course. Take it easy. *:-)*

The pricing too - 3 course meal for $0.75. Lobster being "poor mans" food on the East Coast. Oysters/mussels being cheap - how things have changed.

I've eaten there a few times when it was "Nellie Cashman's". The food was great, and they say it's haunted. Now it is a Mexican restaurant, I believe. Man, it was one of the best pancakes I ever ate. I remember I was eating it so fast, some fell on my 1880's repro tie and left a butter stain. Damn.

Santee, there was a chain of railroad restaurants at the time, the Harvey Houses, that employed young, single women and provided good food in fairly elegant surroundings. The young ladies (called "Harvey girls") were of good character and often met their future husbands among the repeat customers of the railroads. These restaurants began in Kansas in 1876 and lasted until 1968, nearly a hundred years later. There is, in fact, an operational Harvey House restaurant in the Grand Canyon Lodge of the Grand Canyon National Park in your home state. If you're ever in the area, you might want to check it out. :)

Interesting slice of western history! I remember watching the movie, "The Harvey Girls" with Judy Garland playing a girl from the East who went West to work at one of the famous Fred Harvey Houses in Sandrock, Arizona. Harvey Houses were one of the first chain restaurants in America. Also in the movie, Murder She Wrote's Angela Lansbury played Judy's saloon girl rival Em! I always thought it was interesting how a big juicy T-bone steak was common with fried eggs for breakfast back in those good old days! Definitely not like today's fast food! Thanks for posting! Mark Twain in Roughing It had a great quote about the food served to passengers at Stagecoach stops. In addition to cramped space, there were accidents and an occasional robbery or attack by Indians. And then there was the food, when it was available. According to Mark Twain, a meal consisted of “last week’s bread…condemned army bacon…a beverage which pretended to be tea, but there was too much dish-rag, and sand, and old bacon-rind in it to deceive the intelligent traveler.” And to rub salt in the wound, meals were not included in the $200 a traveler paid for passage.

Heh, a McDonald's at Bodie. I went to the Calico House Restaurant early this year. Must've been in the middle of the food shipment because nearly everything was sold out. I've ate at a good number of old restaurants along California State Route 49. Most of them are pretty good, some of them with food you wouldn't expect in that area. Almost if they kept the menus up to a extent. Especially the French influence. One of the more memorable dinners I've had was at the Idaho Hotel in Silver City Idaho back in the late 90s.

Good one Santee! Food business family here. Tough way to make a living. Many stories of so called restaurants reusing food customers left on plate. I've always thought winter would have been the best time to eat in an old restaurant. Meat easily kept cold. Mexican people most likely had the inside track on safe food in hot climates. Dried everything was de rigueur.

There was a hilarious episode of Little House on the Prairie, in which an industrious entrepreneur opened a restaurant in Walnut Grove offering only three menu items... the first fast food restaurant. At the very end of the episode, an old southern colonel with white hair and a goatee rode into town with the intention of opening a restaurant that served only one item: southern fried chicken!

Love that clip from Liberty Vallance. If you look at all the publicity clips Marvin has two or three different quirts. One looks more like a whip and reached to his ankles. Hey a good idea. Do a video on quirts and whips.😉

@@ArizonaGhostriders well I think it was actually right next door but yes they were selling food out there and I did buy some food from there. The place I went to was like a bar but not really at the same time. That was for the back to 1885 event that I went to. Maybe I'll actually get a chance to eat in there again if they actually do it.
