It is such a cool car ! A word of caution though.... To restore the Karmann chassis you'll need tramgauges and know how to use them to keep it flat, safe and drivable. The body is if I remember correctly handmade and welded to one big piece which makes it difficult to handle. It will be a lot easier to get this car going than the Dragon. And more fun if you ask me...

Put a cup of gas with one hose in it... Attach to one fitting ... Turn it over.... Switch the hose to the other fitting and test again... The one that flows " out " goes to carb The other one is from the tank... Easy to test 😉 This also confirms if pump works.. 🤔 OR LOOK AT RUSTY IN THIS CASE!! 😆😂
@neil62123 жыл бұрын
Good progress! I believe all of the non fuel injection VW fuel pumps are the same. The use of slotted head screws are a nod toward making it easily serviceable. The tiny little flapper with the small screw holding it is a valve. The other red looking disc is also a valve, which wants to be replaced. To remove it, simply insert a small pin punch or screwdriver from the opposite side, and hit it lightly with a hammer. That will drive out the whole thing, including the aluminum part. When you re-assemble it, lock the new aluminum part in place by staking it in a couple of spots with a center punch, just like the factory did. Again, designed to be rebuilt with only very basic tools by anybody who is reasonably handy!
@mawa013 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not quite right Neil. The VW fuel pumps vary according to the years of manufacture. For example, the rubber seal and the copper ring, have been for a later year of manufacture. These two things would have been needed if it had a brass cover on the power fuel pump. The last pumps installed, you could not even disassemble. Only exchange goods, not repairable. However, from the make, they were actually almost the same

I’ve never understood why people commonly remove all the spark plug wires at once and then try to figure out how to put them back. I always replaced them one by one, starting with the longest, I’ve done this hundreds of times as a professional mechanic and I’ve never had an issue. Yes, I know the firing order, the direction of distributor rotation etc, but that takes time and it takes far less time to replace the cap and rotor first, one by one, then the plug wires. I think your pretty incredible otherwise, please keep it up.
@garymallard46993 жыл бұрын
I been wrenching 50 + years and do that too...one at a time ..or masking tape to mark them.... I did sign repairs for decades too We had to fix burnt wiring and there can be 10 - 20 wires burnt in a glop....colours hard to figure out ( they normally are different colours ) or sometimes all the same colours ( built where they only buy one colour wire ).... I found if you slowly peel them apart you can figure it out quicker than the guys who cut them right away and then scratch their heads to figure out the wiring later.... On big signs it takes awhile removing lamps and covers tracing multiple ballasts and wires to get it wired correctly... Work Smarter And it is Faster

I had similar issue last week. Turned out pump was fine. The plastic float clip in the carburettor was the wrong way round. I bought three new pumps too. Don’t ask
@oldtanker48603 жыл бұрын
Those 2 last items you had in the pump you were puzzled about were check valves. The fibrous one is not a filter, just another flapper check valve to allow flow one way only. The metal one does the same thing. From what I saw the problem was the diaphragms in the pump were just old and stiff. If you replace them and the gaskets you should be golden. Also you need a de-greaser in your shop to help. When taking apart things like the pump it's better to clean it up, then take it apart so you don't spread crud around the insides of the item. Those brass tubes are going to be an issue because those are press fit and not screw in. You "might" get away with some epoxy like JB Weld or if you want, before assembling the pump, solder it in like a plumber sweats a copper joint. That might be pretty touchy though
@pyoung1683 жыл бұрын
Mentioned elsewhere, but the “oil” leaking from the engine looks awfully thin to be just oil. Given the state of the fuel pump you should check to be sure the crank doesn’t have fuel/oil mix in it before you run the engine again. If so it’ll toast the bearings, damage the crank, worst case cause a sump fire. Also my ‘70 Beetle had the same issue with the pump inlet and outlet tubes coming loose. At the time (early 80s) only fix was a rebuilt pump. Combination of heat, aluminum, brass and fuel made epoxy not work. Good luck.
@CTmoog3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! I think you might be on to something with the fuel in the oil. I will be rebuilding this engine soon. Stay tuned my friend!

65' was the last year for the 40 horse "1200". 66' was the first year of the 1300 and on. 67' maybe a 1300 or 1500 if it's the original engine for that car. When in doubt reference Rusty's fuel pump.

6:20 if you don’t want that cap, send it to me. That’s an original German part. All it needs is cleaned up. The electrodes inside don’t look very worn. And you can just clean those up. Along with the rotor. A new Chinese one will not last as long as that one has , nor will it be any better.
@OkFixer3 жыл бұрын
That orange cap you had in your hand is the wrong cap it’s too big. It belongs on one of those Chinese 009‘s. Also, before you put that fuel pump together you might want to try and get a flat surface. Put a disk of 120 sandpaper down. And sand those two surfaces smooth. Usually because of the heat and cool cycles. Those pumps are warped. I did this on two of mine… Tried to rebuild them… And ended up with them spritzing gas everywhere. So I sent them in to Sparks Works to have them rebuilt. Bill does fabulous jobs on distributors and fuel pumps. Also it doesn’t look like you have the correct carburetor. This can be bough outright at Volkz Bitz. All three of these devices work together. But that’s neither here nor there. I understand you want to get it running and move it. Judging by the oil leak underneath. It’s more than plausible that the end play in the crankshaft is allowing everything to walk back-and-forth causing your oil leak on your main seal. Grab a hold of that pulley in back and see if you can feel any play. It should be about .005 . If it’s an eighth of an inch, like it probably is. Then that engine will need to be line bored and thrust cut. If they can. I had the same problem on both of my cars. I was able to save the original case on the 69. And I located another case for my 67 that I can use. I’m trying to use original German stuff. I have a Mexican engine in the 67 right now, and all the tin doesn’t fit on it right....Because it’s not German.

Maybe this picture will help: data.motor-talk.de/data/galleries/0/136/59/16112975/benzinpumpe-29406.jpg The gaskets at 49:49 are not placed on top of each other as shown in the picture. But if the hose connections for the fuel hose are no longer tight, there is a major fire hazard in the engine compartment. There are repair kits with a screw connection available, but then a thread has to be cut into the fuel pump. I would replace the fuel pump.
