You did a superb job on this Alvey! I’ve been interested in these reels since I first learned about then from an Australian friend back in the 1970s, They are incredible surf fishing reels and Alvey rods are impressive. Your restoration of this reel shows what an impressive artist you are! - Chris Jenkins, Raleigh, NC, USA

They are so worth restoring. So good of a job.

Magnífico trabajo, una restauración respetuosa con la pieza, no como las barbaridades que se ven en algunos canales asiáticos.

What vintage is the 500/c I disocvered a beautiful example, that looks like it hardly ever saw water, nit sure it ever saw salt water!

That sounds unreal mate! I hope you ended up going through with restoring it? Especially if it has been passed down to you, it would be great to hear that it’s been restored and put back to use again!

just bought a black 50-07 single-handled surf champion and can't wait to make her glossy again and get out there and chase some drummer
@aussierestos91054 жыл бұрын
That’s the go mate!! Love hearing stuff like this. I would love to chase some drummer with an Alvey one day
Came here as I’m about to restore 2 of them myself, a 5” and a 6”. Beautiful work but bolt your buffing machine down.

Well done on the resto. Just note the last (pivot) bolt went in upside down. it goes in from underneath the side cast mechanism before the spool is fitted. I use light oil all round for lubing but your light application of marine grease was excellent, might copy that on a few I've got lined up.

Hey mate. Yes I am well aware of that! I decided to do that purposely because the head of the bolt polished up nicer than the but and because this reel will be fore display only, I kind of liked showing it off as it is, so I decided to leave it back to front

Nice reel, nice job, are they still in production, ?i thought i heard that they went out of business.
@aussierestos91053 жыл бұрын
thanks mate! they nearly did go out of buisness a few years back but they reached out to Aussies to buy more alvey reels and the country went crazy buying up! now they cant keep up lol. they also now sell egg beater style reels and have also branched out selling the classic alvey style reel to America! one of Australias biggest fishing brands saved just by reaching out to 7 NEWS admitting hardship. I am proud to be an Australian fisherman using alvey reels!

@@aussierestos9105 I've had a 6inch for decades, bought it new, but never went fishing, also have 3 old brown plastic / Bakelite Alveys , about 4 inch or so hanging in my man cave, i should get them down and spruce them up a bit, maybe even go fishing.
@aussierestos91053 жыл бұрын
Mate! There is nothing stopping you! Definitely bring them down and give them a service! I would definitely be giving them a bit of a workout on the light gear chasing some tailor up the beach with this cold weather coming in, it’s nearly tailor season on the east coast of Australia if you’re on this part of the country?

I would love to know what the colour match is of the red stain that you see on some of them?

What sort of vanish did you use?

I will be honest, I'm sad you didn't retain the original varnish look. Other than that nice job. Just a side note I've always just used good old fashioned vaseline when it comes to grease for them.
@aussierestos91054 жыл бұрын
I am just as sad mate. I tried my hardest but I couldn’t find the original varnish colour anywhere so I had to make do with what I had

I don't like the reel itself, the finish isn't up to spec
@aussierestos91053 жыл бұрын
Can you link me to your video of you doing a better restoration please mate?
@hp9mm3 жыл бұрын
@@aussierestos9105 So i can't have an opinion? It isn't even a restoration, its just sanding every piece, even the original plating down to the brass. If you had replated the brass that would have been worth the restoration name. But no, attack someone with an opinion instead. If you put a video on the net you are liable to have it critiqued, accept that or don't post anything so nothing can hurt your feefees.
