I just bought an antique oak roll-top desk almost identical to this one. Paid $300 for it and it is pretty worn out but very repairable. this sucker is heavy as H*** :) Very excited to get on with this project. I wanted to give it an updated look, but I'm noticing that even the brand new ones are typically stained, not painted.

Thanks for the comment, have a go at the restoration, you could break it down into parts, may make it seem less daunting. I'd offer to do it, but looks like you're in the States, a bit far for shipping!

Did you use a stripper on the apron the rolltop part of the rolltop desk?
@ritchandsj33337 ай бұрын
Yes you can use the paint stripper, but be careful not to damage the webbing behind the slats.

Great job - what did you treat the wood with before polishing? Thanks
@ritchandsj33333 жыл бұрын
Hi, we used a mix of 90% treatex hard wax oil, to 10% treatex thinner, think of it as a sanding sealer. You could use anything that will help seal the timber.

Thank you for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed it. Typically the slats are glued on to a canvas/fabric backing. We were lucky as none of ours had moved. I believe it’s just a case of cleaning up the slat as much as possible and them re-glueing with a wood glue. Please bear in mind I’m only an enthusiastic amateur. If you look at the kzbin.info or kzbin.info this may give you some ideas, both these channels have been a great source of information. Let us know how you get on, all the best Ritch & SJ.

I am refinishing some cabinets and there is a rolling cabinet that cannot be removed as you did here. It's going to be a real challenge getting into all those crevices while still in place. Can you tell me what product you brushed on and do you wash it after brushing/before sanding? Much appreciated!
@ritchandsj33333 жыл бұрын
Hi, here's a link to a video we did showing the paint stripper we used and how we use it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoOumoKkfrZ0kKs You can buy it from Toolstation in the UK see link www.toolstation.com/home-strip-paint-varnish-remover/p70267 The secret is to not let it dry out, you can use steel wool to help remove the finish, but make sure you have removed as much of the steel wool bits from the piece before washing off. This especially important when working with oak as the steel particales can react with the tannings in the oak and leave you with little black dots. If possible use stainless steel wool. Hope thats helpful.

My husband and I have just inherited a desk identical to this. It's been in the family for 3 generations and I would love to get it restored. We are in Yorkshire in the UK, is this something you would do?
@ritchandsj33332 жыл бұрын
Hi Kirsty, although we don’t do this as a service, no formal training, it is something we could do. We’re coming into a very busy period for us, so wouldn’t have any availability until at the earliest April next year. We’d also need to see the item before quoting, if you are interested please DM us on Instagram @ritchandsj. Thanks

Thanks so much for the vid, it looks great! I'm in the early stages of restoring my fathers roll top. So far, I've just used citra-strip then mineral spirits prior to sanding down 2 drawers as a test run. You seem to have used vastly different supplies/techniques. I was hoping you might share what materials you used, including the sanding tools, and the steps in which you did so. No worries if not, thanks again!
